“Till all are one!” Really well done, Michael! Optimus has often been compared to John Wayne, but he’s so much more than that. I always liked how he was portrayed as a wise leader. The perfect antithesis to Megatron.

Thanks! There's a definite John Wayne vibe in the early episodes, but I don't think the Duke would ever surrender or retreat as willingly as Prime often did. If the Duke was a Transformer, his name might have been "Roostermus Pride." :D

The whole time I was watching this video I kept thinking, "Yeah... this guy gets it." Just everything, from Optimus Prime's personality to why he's so important to me, and to many of us from that era.
What a well articulated and heartfelt video.
Thanks, man. I'm gonna keep this one bookmarked to show people when they ask me about why Optimus is so important to a guy like me in his 40's.
Quick side note, I got in trouble back in 1997 for a paper I wrote in my Sophomore English class. We were supposed to write on who is our Hero. I wrote about Optimus Prime. The teacher gave me half-credit simply because I wrote about a cartoon character. I politely went to her desk, argued about her instructions which never said it couldn't be a fictional character and she had no justification to give me half credit considering my subject was indeed a hero. She yelled at me in front of the class, said I never listened, to which I rebuttled that I did indeed listen and she never said it couldn't be about fictional character, whether he's a cartoon, toy, or whatever. The class began to agree with me and argue with her as well. It turns out other kids had also gotten half credit for the same reason, even though we had followed her initial instructions.
She never did relent, or apologize, or change our grades.
But in my yearbook one of my classmates wrote to me that I was his hero because I stood up to our teacher for a just cause.
I was simply trying to be like Optimus.
Anyway, great video. I agree with you on all counts. Thanks for this.

Optimus Prime was/is my hero. Growing up, I was an introverted fat kid with little to no friends. My dad was an alcoholic and wasn't there for us emotionally. Everything good and honorable I learned and project out to the world today, I learned from Optimus Prime. Watching you review brought back a flood of memories and emotions. It even brought a little tear to my eye; I emphasize completely. "'Until all are one."

  • @ShadowACE1998
    @ShadowACE1998 Před 6 lety +123

Optimus was my dad. not literally or figuratively so much but he embodied all the traits my dad tried to instill in me. Honor, loyalty, responsibility, duty, kindness, but with the strength to stand up for what you believe to be right. to never falter and never give up. It didn't hurt that my dad drove a cab-over semi too. So yeah when a 4 year old Logan who idolized his dad first set eyes on the Transformers, it was only natural that Optimus Prime would stand apart as the one I would attach myself to.

The way you speak about Optimus Prime is nothing less than inspiring. Your love of him is incredibly clear and honest; and to be honest, your summary of him at the beginning of the video brought tears to my eyes with how much he has meant to you. He has meant a lot to me too. Thank you for the review and please keep up the great work. Your videos have reignited the passion that I have for collecting over the past few months since I have found your channel. It had kinda grown stagnant over the last couple of years. I am reorganizing a rack that my father built for me to hold shot glasses (when I use to drink a lot) into an 80's toy shelf (since I don't drink like that anymore) as I am watching your videos. Thank you again. Have a great weekend.

Thanks! I'm saddened by the number of Transformers fans who didn't resonate with his values. I tend to steer clear of that fandom because of number of people who behave more like Megatron than Optimus. So nice to see such an overwhelming response of positivity to this video. I truly expected quite the opposite. Glad to hear your passion has been reignited and that you no longer drink. A major reason why I have all of these things is I've never smoked, drank or used drugs. Hope the extra money helps you build a great collection. :D

As a kid in the 80's who lived through some very difficult childhood, Optimus prime was always first and foremost, the greatest inspirational, hero who always managed to lift me up (figuratively speaking) & always managed to light my darkest hours. (He's the REAL reason why I'm still alive today after all those years because believe it or not, things got so bad at one point in 1984 that I actually thought about committing suicide...until I hear some few positive/inspirational message from Prime in the cartoon. So it's not really an exaggeration to say that he actually saved my life!)

I remember the day I went shopping with my Grandma and she bought me Optimus. He was $20.. quite expensive for us at that time so I can relate to how things were for your family.. maybe a little. My Optimus was the version with the blue Roller. I always thought it was odd that there were seats for people but never saw any.. now I know why. Optimus was always a hero of mine too but you can imagine my surprise when I started taking kickboxing lessons and when it was time to spar with the instructor, he played “The Touch” from Transformers:The Movie. Optimus was his favorite too 🤓😎
I saw a video of Peter telling that story of how his late brother had inspired Optimus’s voice. I started tearing up when he did. It explained everything.

The scene from 2007 Transformers: The Movie and epic score when Autobots arrive, then finally watching Optimus transform live and say in Peter Culllen's voice "I am Optimus Prime" still gives me goosebumps! One of the few next Gen films to tap into my 80's love and hero archetype.

    • @shawnp4155
      @shawnp4155 Před 6 lety +2

Michael Mercy they definitely deviated from that great film in the following sequels and went off the rails of sorts. I kinda get figuratively misty eyed when my young nephews come over and see their archetypes for heroes(the flawed Ironman, Deadpool, Wolverine, etc) and see them light up when I show, and better yet, explain my collection of my iconic 80's heroes collection(Optimus, He-man, Liono, Luke Skywalker, Superman, etc). It's like an awakening in their eyes on the lines of "what? I can be like that!". Because for the most part that message hasn't been reinforced through the same medium you and I grew up on.
There's this great scene in Superman Returns when Superman takes Lois up in the sky and says "What do you hear?". She responds "Nothing", and Superman goes onto reply "I hear everything............You said the world doesn't need a Savior, yet everyday I hear them crying out for one.". I think for me that scene really resonates with the theme of this video and Optimus' ascended approach to being a hero.
You may have a smaller CZcams channel, but what you are doing is keeping thay spark going that in time, can ignite into a big fire. Great job as always

I got my Optimus for Christmas when I was six years old. I'd had an ear infection for almost a week, but woke up that morning with no pain, no congestion, and the best Autobot under the tree. I don't think he had quite the impact on me as he had on you, but he was definitely the epitome of leadership and a mainstay in my countless immersions into make-believe. --Your adoration of him does beg the question though: How did you deal with his death in Transformers: The Movie? I remember seeing the trailer as kid, hearing the narrator ask, "Will Prime die?!" I turned to my dad, shaking my head and smiling. "He can't die! He's the leader. They'll never kill him!"
Not long after, I was watching the silver screen in disbelief as the mournful soundtrack marked Prime's last (ostensibly) moments. I cried. I distinctly recall crying. Not sure how my dad handled the situation, because I did see the rest of the movie. Maybe it was stifled or something.
That said, I can't imagine how that must have hit you. It was a cruel thing to subject young viewers to--crueler still when I later realized it was all done to issue in a new line of toys.
Though I would agree that contemporary Prime barely retains the essence of the cartoon, he has managed to say a few lines that stick with me. I'm sure it was ripped off from somewhere else, but the line, "Fate rarely calls upon us at a time of our choosing" is pretty damn insightful, and is fitting of OG Prime's wisdom. Thanks for sharing!

I grew more up with Transformers Prime, but I loved him there too! He took the role of the serious one, so no one else had too. He was a father figure to the Autobots, and viewed them more as family then just allies. I loved how he acted as a little kid, still do to this day! Full of substance and moral. Just like the man himself. I especially love it when you connect and relate all of Optimus's prime features and characteristics with the morals and honours of life that one should follow in order to be truly honest, sincere and righteous not hypocritical , deceptive and egomaniac. Well done man. Keep it up! Always nice to see a lot of zest and peace in your videos.

Well, this is simply one of my favourites CZcams videos of all time.
It had me misty eyed several times and took me right back to my childhood and my love for Optimus Prime, waiting months to get him for my fifth birthday (both my parents took a day off work to scour toys stores for 50miles to find him) and then treasuring him.
I also remember crying my eyes out when he died in the movie and racing home to get hold of him.
He still sits on a shelf close to my bed and I see him every day. I’m nearly 40 and will treasure him forever.
However, I’d probably forgotten how much of a values based leader he is, and what a leadership role model he is.
You’ve inspired me to rewatch the show.
A sincere thank you Michael, for all of the effort and love you’ve put into this video and many others. Your sentiments, approach and delivery are all top class.

Laser Optimus was my first Prime I had, it was a gift from my late aunt.
I can say for sure that she had to be the main reason(and my brother) that I got sucked into the world of Transformers.
Just about every spin off since I have always made it my duty to always get the Optimus Prime of said story, my favorite Toys of him being Optimus Primal from Beast Wars and Optimus Prime from Armada(heck I had both versions of that one too)
Currently my most prized piece is the MP Optimus that I snagged for a good price at a Toys R Us about 2 hours away from my home. It was by mistake too cause I wasn’t expecting to even FIND a Masterpiece Optimus Prime there, man oh man I swooped him off the shelf right away, regrettably I didn’t have enough money and I wasn’t going to be paid till the NEXT DAY!...so I did the logical, placed him on Layaway, drove home, got some rest and drove 2 hours back the next day to get him.
I swear he was testing my patience too cause they actually misplaced him and took a good while to finally find him somewhere in the back crammed in the corner in some sack.
It was well worth the wait though, he now stands proudly on my shelf dead center of my collection of various other figures I’ve bought over the years.
I am looking forward to maybe gettin a hold of a Laser Optimus Prime sometime just in memory of both my aunt since I long lost my original figure. Maybe it’ll be quite the adventure like it was with my MP Prime
What else can I say, prime is just the hero of all heroes when it comes down to it for me, he reminds me of my loved ones such as my aunt and also my father.
He Never gives up and always holding strong to hope even when the odds are stacked against him. I guess I can say that is the reason I always been optimistic, after all every obstacle that life throws at you has a way to over come it, it might be easy it might be difficult but it can be overcome.

A True Hero. Thank you for this amazing video. Optimus Prime has and always will be my favorite character from anything. I love Optimus, not only because he's a the greatest warrior or leader, but because i've always seen Optimus as the ultimate father figure. Wise, honorable, and compassionate, a true leader. A true hero. A leader who is gentle and cares for his comrades and not just loudly barking out orders and stuff. The voice Actor; Peter Cullen, portrays him perfectly and helped to form the character the way he is, he's a great guy, i love him. Optimus Prime stands as a beacon of hope and freedom, he inspires his Autobots to be the best they can be, and teaches them the Autobot code: that all sentient life is precious and should be free. His comrades love and respect him. It's weird how you can look up to these fictitious characters and be inspired by them and relate to them, especially Optimus Prime. He's the one I always looked up to growing up, His character and personality inspired and molded my morals and ideals growing up throughout my life. I believe that all of us no matter the age, can learn something or another from Optimus Prime throughout our lives.
    TILL ALL ARE ONE! :')

All of your words about Optimus really resonated with me. I’m an early 2000s kid, but my mom grew up with G1. As such she had all the DVDs. So I grew up with both the Unicron Trilogy, and G1. Optimus to me was a symbol of absolute right, and heroism. He defined my morals. A lot of people like to ask “what would Jesus do?” I try and ask myself “what would Optimus do?”. Wether it be the humble truck dad of G1, or the military commander of Armada. He’s the greatest hero I could’ve ever asked for.

Once again Big Mike you amaze and entertain us with yet another stellar video offering. What Optimus means to me, well its a little embarrassing- he was my father figure...I never knew, met, or even heard from my biological father, still have not to this day. Optimus for me was RoboJesus, Abe Lincoln, and the wise & brave Native chief...I know he's often referred as Superman but I think thats a tad too simplified. Yes i love sups' but Prime was something else, special, gentle, brave beyond measure, and above all else selfless and rightegeous. My private school use to send home guides about what toys, music, comics books, and tv parents ought to support us kids in taking part in. That reinforced our churchs' values of kindness and acceptance. Optimus, Thundercats, GI Joe,He-man/Bravestarr, and Peanuts were really pushed and supported because of their diverse and honest practical life lessons. For me he still Is all those things, Im just dissapointed the mass global public outside the fandom never gets to see those honorable traits onscreen in the M-Bayformerverse. Rescuebots does a "decent enuff" job of presenting core values, but since the films took over, theres very little Optimist in Movie Prime. Sad sad commentary not just for us fans, but for moviegoers period. He'll always be my robodad, my favorite figure, my hero.

    • @MichaelMercy

Beautifully written, thanks for sharing. I see a parallel between Prime and Christ as well, especially with the self-sacrificing attitude and the trinity of being linked with 2 other beings. The comparison to Superman is often made, but Supe was just so invincible, I don't think he struggled as much as Optimus and required as much resolve and optimism. I enjoyed the first Bay Transformers movie because I think it had a bit of the original spirit of Optimus Prime, but I checked out with "Give me your face" and "We will kill them all." That incarnation isn't intended for me, and is Optimus Prime in name only. The important thing is not the name or the model of truck; it's the wise, compassionate, empathetic and self-sacrificing spirit within.

My personal first BOXED Optimus prime was one of the reissues (the one with the reprint of the first comic and first 3 episodes .) My original was a hand me down and was missing parts (the trailer door , roller, one of the fists and gun etc.) but he mattered so much to me . He was my hero. Seeing prime die I knew he would come back. He had to. He was to great to die. I’ve had a encore reissue as my G1 prime in my collection for years as my original was basically destroyed in moving as a kid and wasn’t collection quality at that. But this video got me to buy one off of eBay. And coincidentally it’s missing the same parts mine as a kid was, I look forward to buying those parts and finally putting back together my child hood hero. Thank you for this amazing video.

Loved this review, it hits home. I still have 26 of the original 27 “Wave 1” Transformer packages, all acquired as a kid in ’84-’85. They are valuable to me because I am the only owner they’ve ever had - I remember the excitement of each and every purchase and gift. Most collectors are younger than me, and have more transformers than I do. But for my Transformers, every ding, scratch, all chrome wear and each unfortunate break was from my own hand. That makes my collection more valuable than anything else I have.
I also remember the feeling of turning the corner in K-Mart or WalMart and seeing freshly stocked shelves of magnificent Transformers packaging. Ah, the memories! Cheers, my friend!

When I was a kid, I always thought the scene where Optimus, empowered by the touch, kicking the metallic backsides of the Decepticons and fighting to the death with Megatron was the coolest thing ever. But now, I see that moment was really to show the severity of Megatron actions. The peaceful, optimistic and highly empathic Optimus was forced to "Stop Megatron, at all costs." This line resonates with me much more then it did then. I believe that line and subsequent battle is a lot more powerful and striking then seeing Iron Hide and Prowl die. It truely show that Megatron has truely done something unforgivable and as pushed the brave autobot leader to commit an act that he never thought he had resort to, 'stopping' him.

I know this is a few years old, but I absolutely love your critique of Optimus Prime. I was a child of the 80s myself. Even though I never owned any Transformers toys, I did watch the cartoon. Optimus always stood out to me and I fondly remembered him was a great character. Decades later, I revisited the G1 cartoon and have a greater appreciation for him, especially after hearing the story about Larry Cullen. I love characters that show compassion. Prime himself is exactly as you describe and that's what makes him a great leader. I also adore Beachcomber for his love for nature and kind heart, and Tracks, whom, despite being vain like Sunstreaker, isn't afraid to befriend and see the good in humans, rather than fall to xenophilia.

Beautifully done, Michael. You’ve brilliantly summarized the very best of what a “mere kids’ cartoon” can bring to our lives. Prime’s kind of heroism represents equal parts strength, kindness wisdom and compassion...and while I personally can’t always find that kind of strength and don’t always posses the as much wisdom as I’d like, I’ve always been sure to embody the kindness and compassion to the best of my abilities. This cartoon character has impacted so many decisions in my life from life-long vegetarianism to a psychotherapy career. It sounds like Prime had a similarly deep affect on you. :)
Thanks so much for putting this together and sharing your thoughts. Down here in the USA, the idea of this kind of a leader makes our hearts ache. We need Prime more than ever.

My older cousin introduced me to Transformers. As I didn't have a brother, I looked up to and idolized him. He was the coolest person with the Tom Cruise haircut and Casio keyboard. He taught me more about life, friendship, empathy, and how to be a leader more than any adult in my life. He learned this from watching Transformers more specifically Optimus Prime as he was his hero as well. When he grew out of his toys, I received them as hand me downs since I was watching the cartoon in re runs and talking about Transformers to anyone who would listen. So up in the attic of my grandparent's house one day, a big suitcase was brought down and as I unbuckled it and began peeling back the lid there inside were Transformers. Ultra Magnus, mini cars and tapes, Thundercracker, Jazz, Slag, Snarl, Jetfire, the Constructicons, Whirl, Soundwave etc etc etc. but the one that excited me the most (other than Magnus) as I peeled away all of these various bots, the one which lit me up most was Optimus Prime.
He was far from new, having seen many a battle in the sandbox or hardwood floor. The trailer hitch was gone, and other than his fists and rifle he was missing all of his accessories, but it was a joy to have this guy in my hands. Converting him without instructions felt like an accomplishment. Too me the weathering wasn't bad, he was well loved, and he really looked like the seasoned and battle worn leader of the Autobots. I have memories of playing with Optimus with my cousin and he used that opportunity to teach me of the commander's basic principles and mantra. Lessons I kept with me to this day, where as a department manager with a leadership role as trainer I like to think my cousin rubbed off on me. So watching this video, and looking at this toy, I see my cousin and I like to believe that because of my cousin that I am the person I am today. I have Optimus Prime to thank for this.

I used to go shopping with my Grandma on occasion because she was legally blind and wanted someone to go with her. She bought me Optimus Prime on one such trip. This was a HUGE deal because he was $20 and it wasn’t even my birthday or Christmas. I feel exactly how you feel about Optimus. There were times when I thought he was kind of a pushover, especially when the Decepticons were leading them into a trap. But Optimus did the hardest thing ever.. he let peace be an option and gave people a chance. I’d like to think that I learned that from my family as well as my favorite ‘80’s cartoons. There were many times I was told that I was too nice at my job and during my 21 years in the military but I think it gained me more respect than any shouting I ever did. Thank you Peter.. and Larry, and of course you, Michael. We need more Optimus 🤓

I am in awe at how good a condition your original G1 is in! And that Matrix you made is great. Thank you for this show case, as well as the message you have emphasized in this video. I plan to have my boys watch this.

I’m 44 and I finally just got my Optimus Prime. I didn’t have one as a kid. I found it tucked up on a shelf at comic con it was complete. I had spent the last few years looking to find one on and off. I almost teared up once I found it.
