    As a curly head for 8+ years who has had ups and downs with their hair, I wholeheartedly agree with you. People should do what works for them. Not everyone has the time to take a day out of their life to do their hair. If braids are your thing, amen. If you don't want to straighten it, amen. If you want to dye, amen. I personally get protective styles or wear wigs for my dose of wanting to do something different, but this year I decided to go to a dominican hair salon to straighten it and trim my ends. Eso si, it was someone I trusted, and the entire time I was 👀 EVERYTHING. When I washed my hair, it went right back to it's natural state and it hasn't been finicky. Will I do it consistently? No. Only when I feel the need to do so, which honestly is very rare just because I have so many alternatives. I did get some backlash from some folks, but we can't all be happy, so 🤷🏻‍♀️.

      I agree, continue doing what makes sense for you. I'll never understand why someone will put their 2 cents in when nobody asked. I'd personally be a bit nervous to fully straighten my hair, so I can see why you'd be hesitant- but you know what to do to get your curls back and change is necessary sometimes. I'm happy to hear the curls bounced right back tho 🙌😭❤

    I honestly don’t even have the desire to have “perfect” curls. I’m natural now 8 years and I straighten my hair 4 times a year and gets trims 4 times a year. I get bored with my hair easily so I def cannot totally wear my curls all the time anyway My hair wouldn’t be considered “healthy” to someone with perfect curls but my hair is still thriving and growing and is way healthier than it was when I had a relaxer and was using heat every 2 weeks. To alot of people , if your curls aren’t perfect , your hair is damaged and that is total bullsht

    • @curlelia
      @curlelia  Před rokem

      I agree, it is BS. Natural hair is natural hair- adding heat to your hair doesn't make you not natural. There's too many curly police on the internet that have way too much time on their hands 😭- keep doing you girl!

      @@trinitym5552 when I say damaged I don’t mean split ends. I mean just because your curls look a little different than they used to people calling them “damaged” or because they ain’t perfect and “completely “ healthy people wanna call them damaged. I made this comment cause I seen a video of a stylist showing a client’s hair saying she been wearing “wet buns “ too much and it altered her curls and caused damaged, but her curls didn’t even look “damaged”. They just were maybe a little looser or looked different or maybe weren’t “perfect” in the stylist’s eyes. But her curls looked fine to me. im no stylist but all im saying is your hair don’t have to be 💯 percent “perfect” for your hair to be healthy.

    I actually think that there's a newer movement of naturals learning to do their hair properly with the advice of natural hair specialists like black girl curls. Alot of us are no longer spending all day doing our hair and are using quality products 👌

I actually never big chopped my first time around and had to this time and it made me realize to not put all my beauty in that aspect of myself. All of that to say I will probably not straighten it again just to show off length and toot my own horn LOL just gonna love my curls and how they are naturally. It’s a struggle but when you lose it you realize you can’t get it back without a do over #lessonlearned

      awwww mannnn! You see this is something I've learned about my hair- it's sensitive to heat styles. I don't know if I'd trust someone to straighten it for me at this point in my life because I'm very happy with how things are. But I get the urge to see your length and switch it up. Sometimes we have to experience damage in order to appreciate what we have. This journey the 2nd time around will be more seamless babe- you got this!

    I feel like the curly hair community really showed up for me in recent years. It took me till I was in my late 20's to gather any type of knowledge on my hair. I used to hate my curls because I had no control or understanding of them.im so grateful to influencers and these social media platforms for creating a space to come when I need assistance. I've only recently in the last 5yrs learned about sulfates and silicones, and tbh, I think the start of my journey benefited from eliminating them from my routine. I havent decided if I'm ready to add them in just yet but my hair is the healthiest its ever been and growing 😁

      I'm so glad this community has been more helpful than negative for you! It was definitely very helpful for me as well when I first started, but I wish i had more diversity to look up to- now, there's SO many curlies that are documenting their journeys and sharing tips- so I love to see it! I say if you're comfortable where you are, don't add anything in! If your routine is working for you, theres no need to change it (in my opinion!) - Sending you continuous hair growth and hair health vibes in this upcoming year boo! ❤

      Outweigh the pros and cons! You can start your curly hair journey any time you want.. if you want to have a little fun with heat styles- I'd say do it! But I wouldn't do both if your goal is to have healthy curls. When you're in the process of restoring your curls, the smallest amount of heat can set you back 1000 steps- TRUST ME 😭

    I gave up on curly hair twice and I found it so much easier to stick with when I don’t have to use the curly girl method. My hair is healthier and easier to manage with no stress over ingredients. I found straightening my hair to be work too - a blow out took forever too and then it was high maintenance trying to get rid of curls and frizz. Curly hair has its own challenges but as someone who has bounced back and forth and transitioned 3 times from straight to curly, I get it.

But if you're not able to hear someone's opinions and still proceed with your own- I could definitely see why the movement seems pointless to them at this point

    Most of my childhood was relaxers like a lot of little black girls. I didn’t start figuring out my curls until college and as career life took over I realized relaxed hair was easier to manage and helped me move up career wise. But then as I realized I could go further with either relaxed or my natural hair I decided to stay natural until Covid hit and I was an essential worker and had no time for my hair as I still only knew what to do with it when relaxed so I relaxed it again and still loved it straight. During a time when death could’ve come for me at any time my hair was not the biggest concern in a pandemic. But once I was no longer an essential worker and had a higher paying job and had the freedom to pay attention to my hair again, I cut it all off and went back natural, and since I know the secrets to my curls, again even when they get longer I feel more confident to be able to handle it even when it gets longer even though I know it’s going to be hard and difficult. I did a lot of research and saw the hair war in the black community which I never understood because the world doesn’t ever want us to forget we are black so hearing “you want to be white if you relax your hair” from a black person was just annoying. But now I’m trying protective hair styles and it’s been working so far in helping me on my natural journey. The most freeing thing to me as a black woman is knowing I can do whatever I want to my hair and it does not impact my career or my money. I am still true to myself no matter what my hair looks like.

    Bendito, the way you were being careful with your words... People.need.to.stop.policing.other.people's.bodies. It's an incredibly weird time to be living and an incredibly weird space to be living in when to be an influencer means you are owned by your audience. It's a journey. If you know, you know--- to be a curly head means nothing is ever consistent, not all products give the same results every time, sometimes you need a break from your curly hair (YES YOU DO), it will forever be a love journey because to invest that much time and care takes love and patience. Let people live!!! Go live your own life, sheesh. I live curly because my hair does not want to be straight and will embarrass me in a drop. It will forever set me straight about attempting straight hair. That's why wigs exist. If folks want to switch it up, let them. It really is no thing.

    • @curlelia

      I just know how sensitive of a topic this is for a lot of people... The last thing I want to make anyone feel is bad for thinking they're helping someone with their opinions- when they're doing the complete opposite. But don't get me wrong, I love my audience- I'd be lying if I said I don't want to disappoint you guys though. SO I can understand that fear of being the person who helped you, to being the person who's causing damage to their own hair- you know? But I'll always stand by doing whatever brings you joy. If it's not hurting anyone, and you didn't ask for an opinion- people need to learn their place and just stay in their lane. 😅

    I know for me, after 10+ years of dedicating myself to being natural and trying to love my hair, it just hasn't happened for me. My hair has never looked the way I've wanted it to and I don't find it suits me at all. It's really difficult because I feel like I look better and more "my age" with straight hair, but straightening it makes me feel like I'm trying to erase my ethnicity. It's a never-ending struggle and I do feel the pull towards the straight side after all this time. And then sometimes I also just wish that my texture was looser and easier to manage. It's so frustrating and I totally get the feeling of just feeling tired with your hair.
