- Amongst the ranches of South Dakota, artist John Lopez is welding unbelievable assemblages of scrap metal and discarded farm tools. His constructions are larger-than-life recreations of bears, bulls, horses and more, all imbued with the spirit of the wild west. While his metal menageries may look like a chaotic fusion up close, stepping back reveals an animal come alive.

This is actually brilliant. I feel actually just like he said. I've seen a lot of junkyard sculptures in my life, but I've never seen anyway capture the life of their pieces like this. Truly amazing.
Agreed. There's a fairly well-known scrap metal sculptor in my neck of the woods who has a unique, fun style, but this guy has a real attention to detail and makes use of discarded material as if it were made specifically for his sculptures. Wow
This made my soul happy. He literally nailed it at the end when he said he is able to capture life in the animals. That statement rang so true.

I drew out a full sized template, then I laid out all of the steel on the template and marked where it should go, then I left the template outside to get ruined in the wind and rain, then proceeded to freehand it all.

I am sorry, but someone who welds zinc or chrome coated steel is slowly killing himself. Giving your life for art is honorable, but perhaps a bit silly.
Maybe that's why he uses a respirator
He's using a respirator and working in what looks to be a well ventilated area, even beginner welders are usually taught the dangers of welding galvanized/coated steel and how to safely do it, of course wearing a respirator or face mask is just good practice when doing any sort of welding
