Actually I just recovered from straining my voice badly two weeks ago. I had tried singing to a really belty song but I hadn't let myself sing freely. I was pushing through tightness, trying to hit those notes without being too loud and I ended up becoming extremely hoarse for three days, hoarse for another three days, tried singing on the seventh day after the initial injury but could barely croak a few off-pitch notes, then I rested for another week.
Thank God that my voice recovered and I'm able to sing again. I'm taking it slow and really working through the basics of breath support, stretching and warming up before singing.

Freya should be throwing in some hair care tips in on the side. Her hair grew back pretty fast after she cut it a few months back.

Finally, Freya tells it like is. I sing a very demanding rep., and you absolutely have to build up to it, and you have to work and train at least 4 days a week to maintain vocal fitness.

I think it has always been vocal strain vs. vocal damage. I believe I was pushing too hard, pushing too much air through the vocal folds. I'm trying to get stronger in that area of singing, so that I can prevent that from happening.

I had to go to the doctor after I tried to learn how to sing, because I tried to do a voice strengthening exercise back in the 1st week of September. It was loud, high and hurt on contact. 3 days later, my neck snapped back into place on its own, but it felt like thorns on the inside for 2 weeks, I sounded tired all the time, & had a barking cough until the second week of December. It turned out to be just a thyroid cyst. Singing scares me more now. My tip is...learn ASL. That really helped when I needed to rest and brought me so much closer to my (now 7 months) fiance.

    Thank you for the information.
Yesterday I did a lot of high belting but I feel I did it properly (open throat, low larynx, no neck tension). I have some discomfort the next day at the back of my throat but no difference in sound in speaking and no 'pain' as such. I will rest for a few days and check again.

I had a few teacher, so I had always pain on my vocal chords after their lessons. It was terrible. Now I am singing on my own. No pain at all

Could you do a video on how to sing Strauss’ “Morgen!” . I loved your “how to sing” series and that is one very favourite lied I’m sure many of us would love a tutorial on it!

That was a really insightful video Freya thank you. but a struggle with which tends to hoarseness is incorrect set-up and monitoring of the singing voice through headphones when recording with a backing track or other intruments. A video on this would be SO helpful. It's very confusing as to 'should I hear my own voice?, or maybe in one ear but the other ear is free? If the backing is too loud we end up hoarse and the performance sounds strained but if backing too quiet it feels difficult to ensure pitch is correct so are just 'floating' around. A video on this would be great.!
