"There is a vast territory between what we're trying to leave behind, and where we want to go - and we don't have any maps for that territory." - Charles Eisenstein
Filmed in the fading light on the shores of Northern Scotland, this short film captures Charles Eisenstein in a moment of grief and reflection. The familiar story of the past is crumbling, while the new story has yet to arrive. In a time of social and ecological crisis, what can we as individuals do in this space between?
An African proverb states "sometimes you must get lost in order to find your way." Eisenstein invites us to embrace a radically different understanding of cause and effect, sounding a clarion call to surrender our old worldview of separation, so that we can finally create the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.

When I was a child I felt that there was something wrong with the world I was born into. As years went by, I was taught that the world is alright and that there is something wrong with me. My whole life I had a difficult time "adjusting" to the system, especially if goes about making money and wasting resources - it always felt wrong. Now, as years go by, I see that that childhood feeling was correct and that there is something very wrong with the world. Today I live in a constant grief when I look at my beautiful child and the nature - both mean the world for me (and they are). We must wake up and shake off the craziness of the illusion, otherwise joy will forever vanish from human experience... Charles, I read your books and you give me hope and power to act. Please continue your beautiful work and I will do mine. Thank you.

Once you acknowledge this longing and the pain and the light and the beauty of your heart you cannot but perceive it in other beings as well, that´s the beauty and the burden, for now, of it.. Not every one can feel. That is the biggest problem of the world. And we are all treated, as we do not feel. There is literally Two Kind of people on this Planet. And this is something no one Knows. The ones who don`t feel, they feel Only Themselves.

I had a awareness when i was 10 years old.
My dad gave me a tiny axe to cut some branches that we will use for bbq later. Uncontrollably, I wanted to throw the axe toward one of our tree , like it was a target.. It took me 2 or 3 times before I succeed. But then, as i forcefully take back the axe in my hand i realized the tree was "bleeding" . It got me to my cor. The tree was alive and i could hurt it and make it bleed. Everything changed that day.
We are trespassing this planet, like it is said in the movie "the earth stood still":
If the planet dies the humans die, if the human die the planet survive.
So when the world is crying for a virus that killed less than 1% of the world population, i cant help but laugh

So I used to feel every single sentiment you present here, and the film is essentially a mirror image of myself up to just about 3 or 4 years ago. I even ran a print magazine in the early 2000s dedicated to these EXACT issues. And then the print industry died. And the magazine with it. And then I moved into the hills, and away from the city and was able to see things from a perspective I’ve never had the privilege of seeing. I was able to process instead of react, learn instead of know. I let the static die off and let the substance shine thorough. And as I started upon this new chapter in my life, new journey in my psyche, I started seeing things I had never seen before, because the clutter of mass media had been washed off my skin. And once I started doing that, I started learning about things I had never even known existed. Because now, for the first time ever, we had access and the means to do that.
Things like the fact that statistically, we are now living in the least violent times in human history. Ever.
Things like Singularity University in which they foster and build ideas that will will impact 1 billion people, including medical advances that are redefining how we approach medicine, forgoing traditional drugs and substances, and making the entire process more personalized and effective. Not to mention the revolutionary approaches they’re working on to fighting cancer, providing clean water for those that need it most, and coming up with ways of bringing clean energy to the world’s most impoverished communities with
Things like 3D printing of homes and structures from graphene/concrete mixtures, allowing a 2000 square foot structure to be designed, built and printed for less than 100k. Imagine how many homeless people around the world will benefit from this, especially as the price goes down as it comes more and more into market. The scalability is endless.
Things like the re-introduction of wolves to Yellowstone and how it’s completely revived the ecosystems there by that simple action and its trickle-down effects. In less than 30 years, they’ve managed to revive native plants and animals and populations and vegetation that the park hadn’t seen for decades.
Things like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, in which people pick and choose and support and back and share the future of our world’s products, ideas, inventions, movements and social campaigns.
And then I learned about B-Corps (Benefit-Corporations) as an option instead of LLCs and S-Corps and our traditional conglomerates, a structure in which the corporation gets rewarded for doing good and giving back tot he community. A structure that has been adopted by over 1500 brands already, including even credit providers and some new banks, as well as Telecom companies and new alternative energy companies.
And then I spent a month in Sri Lanka teaching kids and teachers in war torn parts of the country how to create educational videos for an educational reform program. And the way they were sponges for new information and contact and connection that they had never known before was the most inspiring thing I’ve ever seen. And none of these people had been connected to the world before, which is only beginning to happen now. Billions of people. Connecting on ideas. That have never connected before.
    Ever.
All of this stuff, I realized, was NEVER being covered by the mass medias, because, well, they rely on the tactics they’ve been employing in order to keep whatever fragmented audiences they have left. Red. Blue. Black. White. Terrorist. Not terrorist. Instead, people were relying more and more on each other to share what is important and make those things the list-toppers we should be paying attention to through growing global communities they’ve built and run and oversee.
Not only is the media and information establishment being threatened (evidenced by the fact that Rupert Murdoch, the devil himself, tried investing in Vice Media because they were reaching his target audience in a way that Fox never could…a real way…a way that actually made the youth interested in what was going on in the world through REAL journalism), but so are our very financial institutions by new methods such as Bitcoin and Litecoin and other virtual currencies, methods of valuation and currency that are being crowd-sourced and built and run strictly peer-to-peer. Yes, they’re not fully mainstream yet, but, well, they’re the first ones, and they’re only babies. And these very ones we know today probably won’t last, but the fact that companies like Amazon and Tesla were accepting bitcoin as payment only shows me that these things are viable future models for whichever one finally ends up sticking.
All of these small things have only happened in the past 15 years of internet connectivity, and that’s while only the most privileged 15% of the earth’s population is connected. With plans already in place to peer-to-peer connect the remaining 85% by providing free internet access the world over, just imagine the power of human being over the traditional models, the inventions, ideas, that don’t even exist yet that soon will. This sharing of information that was, even up until 10 years ago (the iPhone isn’t even a decade old yet btw…), wholly unprecedented. And also keeping in mind, some of these people that are in some of the worst conditions on the planet, are the very ones that thirst the most for knowledge and education and ideas.
Mother Earth is going to be just fine. It’s us, and only us, that we’re currently destroying. But more and more as I pay attention, the more and more I truly believe that is us, and only us, that are also rebuilding the world we’ve always believed we could, and should, live in. And as more and more of us continue to connect and build and share, the more beautiful that world will become.
One advantage of the fact that for the first time in human history, more people now live in urban areas than rural areas, is that those rural areas are now less populated, which, to me, seems like a solid first step in reviving parts of the natural world that we’ve been so used to trampling upon.
As Greg Palast, the infamous BBC investigative journalist that broke, among other things, the story on the rigged Bush elections of 2000 & 2004, once told me “Everything in the mainstream begins in the fringes.” We, the people, who were once relegated to the fringes, seem to finally making our way into the mainstream. The idea that one person can come up with an idea that can affect all of humanity once seemed absurd, but now, it’s slowly and more often becoming the norm.
The more I learn about what people are working on and doing and achieving in this new hyper-connected day and age, the more I can’t help but feel more and more hopeful, reversing a trend that has perpetuated through most of my prior life. I feel we are actually beginning to acquire the tools necessary to create the world we want to live in.
I suppose, as I approach 40, I feel that I've gone through my grief and have found a new door at the end of that painful decades-long walk. I truly believe that we’re gonna be just fine. We just have to give it time. And believe in the power of the people. This is the first time ever that it exists in actuality instead of just ideology and we're still learning how to best use it.

It's just so easy to fall into the trappings, and I won't lie, I still get seduced by it from time to time, but ever since I've stepped into the other side and know that it's there, it's made it much easier to discount the fear and negativity. And I do think that it's becoming more and more 'trendy' to lean in that direction - one that turns what were once hopeless situations into opportunities for solutions. It's coming... And greetings back at you Robert! Very much appreciate your taking the time to comment.

Same to you, Wasim! Thank you for replying, I can only agree on every single word you said, and I honor you for showing yourself in this vulnerable, open and honest way by admitting to all the instances you get seduced ...same here, of course. :-).. and the only way out or the first step, I guess, is simply to come to terms with this fact and to be loving and accepting with yourself. Daring to really take a first step towards authentical loving yourself, as hard as it really is at first.. I have met a very beautiful and wise older therapist during the last years who had told us some things I want to share with you. They may sound trivial at first glance. but "trivial" like the truthfullness spoken by the child in Hans Christian Andersses Fairy Tale "The Emperor´s new clothes". He said "How would it be if you would behave towards yourself as if you were your best friend?" and "I still believe in the possibility of a world were human beings treat themselves as if they were all brothers and sisters".. Really absorbing these sentences on a very deep, emotional core level has begun to change my life.. Best wishes and Thanks again, Wasim

"In order to find your way, you must get lost." That rings true. It's frustrating to me when people act like the current order is part of nature itself ; our economic & political systems were created by human beings, and human beings will create new systems to replace them. I think the beginning is a process of understanding where we are, and describing where we want to go. So, first we understand the current economic & political systems & why they are failing, and with that analysis in mind, we describe the new systems we want & design them in detail. In an earlier stage of design, we can just describe the qualities of the system we want to create as if it already exists (without filling in the details). Deeper into the process, we become more specific & describe what happens in the "black boxes", so design goals such as "money will work for us, instead of enslaving us" and "poverty will be disallowed" will become fully realizable by implementing detailed plans, instead of being things we want but have no path toward. It would make sense to have many different teams working on this - collaborating together & trying experiments on smaller-scale. When you design something totally new, I think it has to be an iterative process -- you won't have a nice linear progression from design goals to final result. I'm still optimistic we'll figure this out, or to be more precise: _some_ of us will figure it out, and the rest of us will reap the benefits of that. One thing I know for sure: the systems of the future will not be designed by people who think it's impossible to do better than the current order. If you think you can't do something, you're definitely right.

(2:01-2:14) “We live in a very, very brutal system; not only towards those who we can easily see as victims but equally brutal towards the perpetrators. Otherwise, how would they become the perpetrators?” -C.E.
There are few maps outlining the terrain and pathways of mutual and self-acceptance. It seems impossible to hold space for affective empathy with those who abuse others, the planet, and themselves when we are not only the victims of others but also victims of ourselves. Recovery appears elusive for both victims and victimizers, alike.
    Kindness seems insufficient, as those who harm others are often more effective at harming themselves; the symptoms of self-hatred resulting from separation are emotionally and cognitively difficult to access for reflection, which can manifest as mental maladaption and social dysfunction. {Such is my experience.}
This quasi-narcissistic struggle occurs under the additional burden of systemic oppression, structural violence, ideological distortions, and institutional corruption. Our systems of social and civil relationships continuously poison the ability of humanity to reclaim compassion through individual recovery and mutual interconnection. And, in the fervor to attain security, we sacrifice ourselves (and future generations) to the institutions that ensure our own demise. Change to more viable pro-social systems of social management can develop from the movement to intervene.
{The affective symptoms of an antisocial society negatively effects the ability for personal individuation and social integration, which is a symptomatic behavioral closed feedback loop that is a representation of ongoing injustice.
Healing towards a pro-social global community requires {IMO*} an exogenous strategic revolution to alter our systems of social management towards a dynamic balance of moral self-governance.
    {A counter-revolution or reformation of Capitalism (as economic tyranny) appears insufficient to dislodge the social disorder of commodification, itself... so, complexity is borne out of the simplicity of ignorance, and not necessarily due to an insufficient technological progress. This suggests an accelerated entropy through an ironically unaware technological fundamentalism, forever in need of disintermediation. Self-enslavement then becomes civilization’s pattern, as it has always been since the adoption of agriculture.}
Alternatively, systemic enabling of safe spaces for institutional and ideological recovery could help illuminate the pathways of individual’s reconnection with self-love and, ultimately, affective empathy and compassion towards humanity as subjectively integrated as an interdependent cultural organism. Until systemic redemption or species extinction, we are only temporarily at war with the self.
Systemic redemption, interpersonal reconnection, and the restitution of one’s true self are the multiple pathways that we must follow, simultaneously. Until then, it appears that the labyrinth of an artificial antisocial disorder, in the structure of civilization itself, will remain in the cognitive blind spot of our social dissonance... at least until the fog of the interregnum clears. Which means that now is the time for movement of abnegation for the illegitimate governance of hierarchy as social control and systemically move towards a mutualism of an indeterminate yet peaceful kind. Possibly the beginning of our recreation as we intend ourselves into being.
How do we create alternatives to scarcity as a means of social management? How do we disintermediate illegitimate representation and moral corruption? How do we socialize the commons while holding autonomy as sacred? How do we equitably share? And, how do we give grace to the unforgiven selves whose reflection we mirror?

What Charles is sharing is very personal eg not being able to witness beauty without feeling pain. I think it is important not to imprint. I am surprised that Charles is focussing on the 'negatives' around status quo. Forgive me but I feel that he has slipped into negativity, compared to the points of view Charles was putting out a few years ago.
There is much reason to celebrate and rejoice, we need to stay in the now in innocent trust and with our minds harnessed to our creative collective potential. Abiding in unknowing is not easy, for sure, maybe it is the greatest yoga of our time.

He said "everybody participates but nobody believes", and was very, very sad to see how inviroments are being destroyed and birds dying off due to mankind's recklessness,..Well, if he would only believe in God's Word, he would know that God promises to "bring to ruin those ruining the earth."
But he, like so very many other people these days, wont even turn to God's Word to see what it says.
This is satan's world,. God's Holy Scriptures say that, over and over and over. Jesus called satan the ruler of the world, and the apostle Paul said that Satan was the god of this system of things, and that he has the world blinded.
I don't go to any church, ..I just read what God has and is saying to mankind, so please don't think that my comments are from some holier-than-thou, holy-roller religious fanatic.
But I will be 60 in January, an old hippie, and I can't get over how, in the past 20 or so years, that people around the world, nearly have the same mindset about believing in anything but an Almighty God, that created all things.
I seriously blame that on the school systems, teaching evolution, and then seeing the false and corrupted so-called Christian religions around the world not living in accordance with the teaching that most everyone knows, without even reading God's Word.
All it takes is a deeper study of God Word, to have a very clear picture of what God has in store, his will, and your outlook and faith will become so clear and strong.
Then you will want to tell anyone who will listen, what you have learned, like it says that the meek of the earth is going to inherit the earth and live forever upon it, in a perfect paradise and that God's original plan for this earth and mankind on it, is back on track.
Please, study God's Holy Scriptures. Much peace to you all. ✌
