- Here is a brand new song the band only recently learned. It comes from one of our favorite musicians, Jimmie Noone and his Apex Club Orchestra.

I especially love the balance of sound that Tuba Skinny always seems to achieve, not only in the fidelity and clarity of truly diverse instruments, and with the wide range of frequencies they project, but also in the volume level of each instrument, as the group always seems to effortlessly "snag" a song in one delightful take. The clarity of the guitars is up front and very prominent, always driving the song forward, supported by precise percussion, while the brass is never overwhelming, likely due to Ms. Cohn's magnificent mutes, as well as her quiet, unassuming supervision of the entire ensemble. The clarinet is never muddied, although we do worry about Craig sitting so close to traffic, but even when a seafood delivery truck and UPS truck and finally a black GMC Yukon enter and exit the scene, these always seem to be in agreement and "in tune" with the new song and with the group, who for well over a decade now has excelled within the background of the New Orleans musical heritage and environment. Tuba Skinny stands upon strong, fine, steadfast, and superlative legs, and with an even-greater repertoire of songs, as well as talent, and some of their better-known tunes from over a decade ago finally seeing millions of views, this is something that should surprise very few of us long-time admirers, listeners, and supporters. - j q t -

Great tune! Lots of variety. What cracks me up in this later stage of Tuba Skinny's career is you still have people, mostly tourists, walking by in the background who have no clue how famous these musicians are, and think they are just background music hired by the city lol. I was lucky enough meet them Sept 8, 2023 when they came to Michigan. Outstanding people.
Exciting to have yet another new tune added to a repertoire that is already well over 400. Many thanks for filming, Randy. As far as I can discover, this was composed by Fred Rose (1898 - 1954) and recorded in Chicago by Jimmie Noone in 1930. He had a piano in his line-up. The tune seems to start in G minor and to have a 'Verse' of 16 bars (00:03 - 00:25, revisited at 02:58 - 03:19). But there seems to be a strain in C in the middle. I expect the complexity and what sounds like an unusual 4-bar chord progression (e.g. 00:58 - 01:02) appealed to the band.

The pianist in the Apex Club Orchestra was Zinky Cohn.
I wonder if there is a connection in Shaye's family tree that would include Zinky...In addition to being Jimmie Noone's pianist he was also writer/ arranger.
@@brendamello2202 According to Wikipedia, Zinky worked mainly in Chicago and died in 1952 at the age of only 43. It would be exciting if a link to Shaye could be traced, though I believe there are very many Cohns in the USA. I was surprised to learn he was the composer of 'Apex Blues' - a 12-bar that is popular because of its catchy, riffy melody, its simplicity, and its susceptibility to being given improvised 'fun' lyrics.

Shaye's entrance with the plunger mute got me feeling DIFFERENT--bump it! Nah but fr though, this is a real swanky tune, and another one on top of an already impressive lineup. So glad I got to see y'all during my trip down South back in May. Speaking as a fan since I was in my short shorts and admiring your performances on CZcams years back, it really was a dream come true. I was slightly nervous since I've always heard horror stories about people meeting their heroes and being gravely disappointed by some degree of arrogance or rudeness, but after mustering up the courage to make an approach, I realized those fears were unfounded--easily the most down-to-earth bunch you'll come across. The cherry on top? Norbert Susemihl made a guest appearance. To put it short, I lost my shit.
Right after the show that night there was a huge street band playing on Frenchmen that quickly turned into an impromptu parade, taking us all the way 'round the block, dancing through the streets. That night was truly magical and solidified--in my mind--New Orleans as one of the most unique, energetic places in the world. Some day I hope to call it home. True masters of the vibe, keep it up
