    I really love Android 16 speech in this and how it's less about "unleash your hidden power" like in the original and more about the dangers of the rigid pacifism when you need to act. Yes, violence isn't a good way to solve problems but standing on the sidelines and doing nothing to stop sth evil because "violence isn't the answer" is not what you should do, because like 16 said, you're simply letting the evil triumph. It's a lesson that Gohan needed to learn.

      I mean... the one thing bothering me with #16' speech is that it kind of seems it never applied to Gohan until the last 15 minutes? Gohan never had a problem fighting when there was no other option - he didn't *like* it, but he'd do it nonetheless. He never had any problem jumping into the fray against way stronger enemies during previous arcs. But here it kind of feels the writers changed Gohan's character in order to justify the speech.

    I'm a 35-year-old man who doesn't cry a lot, but this brings me to tears every time I watch it. DBZA is, as far as I'm concerned, DBZ's ultimate dub, although unofficial. It came into my life at a time I was struggling with depression and it helped so much I couldn't begin to describe. Never laughed so hard at anything, especially during the "Freezer" saga.
    This moment is emotional to me for a lot of reasons, firstly because I was already emotionally attached to DBZA and the hiatus made the hype that even greater. Secondly, this was actually what got me into DBZ when I was 12, Goku's and then Gohan's fight against Cell was the first thing I watched, and I got instantly hooked.
    But then I started growing up and the low quality Brazilian dub started sounding dumber and dumber to me (I'm from Brazil), and, having the privilege of the Internet since I was a kid, I learned English and decided to watch the FUNimation Dub, which is far superior to the Brazilian one, and watched the entirety of DBZ on it. That fact made finding DBZA even better, because someone who never watched the Funimation dub would never get many of the jokes.

    @Arkayjiya Před rokem +27

    The ending of part 1 is one of the most masterful I've seen in any media. The fact that they manage to bring up so much emotion in a parody is incredible, jokes are generally really bad at keeping the tone consistent enough for the emotions to build up that high (the MCU knows something about that xD).
    It works in part because they don't hesitate to just keep a scene of someone standing there and transforming for literally 1 minute and 40 seconds, almost 10% of the whole video just for this scene with no joke and no action. I also like how for once, the reaction shots that DBZ is famous for using as ridiculous filler actually serve the scene in this case. Of course a lot of the credit definitely goes to the original soundtrack that they remixed here, it's perfect for this scene. The animators who got the idea for the tears going upside were also genius here cause that part was not in the manga.
    And it's not even nostalgia for the original japanese music, I've read but not watched DBZ before watching this so I did not know the song.

  • @N0-1_H3r3
    @N0-1_H3r3 Před rokem +6

    The song at the end, over Gohan's transformation was performed by Lawrence Simpson, aka MasakoX, who voices Goku and Gohan in Abridged.
    Also, yes, there were Linkin Park references:
    Gohan says "I'm just one step closer to the edge, and I'm about to...", to which Cell interrupts "Everything you say to me... is pissing me off", both lines referencing the song One Step Closer. Soon after, Cell says "And in the end, it didn't even matter", a line from In the End, a song used many times for Anime Music Videos with footage from this fight.

      to be fair this was also a classic case of there being no alternative. as the saying goes (and 16 referenced this) all it takes for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing. gohan was the good person doing nothing. is his mentality understandable? absolutely, as you said, hes 11. nobody should be put in a position like that, much less a child. but he was the only person able to stop cell, and cell was not willing to be talked down, or stopped by any other means.
      basically, violence is never a good solution, but sometimes all the alternatives are worse, and its simply a case of the least bad option available to you.

    You were not kidding about Gohan being your favorite character.
    You are going OFF on this man.
    To be fair, this is also probably my favorite version of Gohan as well. :)
    Edit: You're also spot on about seeing so many transformation of Gohan transforming for the first time and how GOOD this one is.
    I actually still get tears forming just from how amazing they did it. I also kinda like the angle they spun with Cell and 16 calling him a coward instead of kinda beating around the bush.
    I mean, the original has 16 basically telling Gohan that it's okay to fight and kill evil people, but this version really hammers it home: Being a pacifist in a situation where people are being slaughtered by a villain does not make you a good person, it only makes you a coward.
    I think that's sorta the exact speech that Gohan needed to hear to not only control his power, but also keep it going. I'd be willing to bet the reason he kept losing his incredible power was because his pacifist nature would take over. He'd snap, and then he'd think, "Oh man, what I'm doing is violent and bad," but 16 has just finished explaining to him that he needs to fight now. Really cool moment in the original, but even cooler in Abridged in my opinion.

But on top of all of that, it has a deep respect for moments in the original that were serious, somber, or downright cool. Gohan SSJ2, Goku SSJ, Vegeta's final flash, Trunks finding Gohan dead, and so many others. The comedy always makes room for moments that deserve it. And from all the details you talked about in this scene to the way the actors tribute the dub VAs, it's so obvious that a lot of thought and care goes into it.

    19:39 "Was that a Linkin Park reference?" Actually, yes. The band was a popular choice for AMVs back in the halcyon days of CZcams and got used quite a few times for DBZ, so they threw in a cheeky reference to its legacy. It's stuff like this that put DBZA head and shoulders above all the other abridged series. They knew when to be funny and clown on the source material and when to treat it with the true gravity it deserves. Even though I think they ended it at the right time, I still miss it so much!
    And also, the sheer effort to re-do the song and translate it!

    Gohan going SSJ2 for the first time is probably the most epic moment in the whole anime. And the fact that TFS did such a good job and treated it with such respect, just shows the love that this series was made with. Speaks volume to the care and love these people had for DBZ

    And yeah, uh.. I tear up every single time I see Gohan transform in this episode. I genuinely agree, I think their version takes all the best aspects of the official versions and becomes the ultimate version of the scene.

    Team 4 star admitted in one of thier monthly updates why it took so long between episode 59 to episode 60 part 1. They got the rights for the song and got it translated and sung to be put in the transformation scene. Team 4 star wanted to do that scene perfectly. The music, editing, writing, voice over work and much more was done to perfection, you could tell they were real fans and wanted to do "right" as they say to DBZ and thier adbridged series, you could tell when watching it this was the ending that they wanted for thier series. And I can still say to this day, I think it's the best transformation scene ever to be done in anything Dragon Ball related, though the ultra instinct transformation was amazing as well and Gohans "new" transformation was something else in DBS Super Hero. It was truly an end of era.

    I’ve always loved the fact that 16 was specifically not someone Gohan knew well. They’re going to make a pretty good joke about it in the next part. Though for me, because 16 isn’t realistically a close family or friend lost like Krillin for Goku, the triggering rage is comes from knowing that if he had broken free sooner there is at least one death he could have prevented. It’s not the vengeance it’s the responsibility.

  • @KyrialArthian
    @KyrialArthian Před rokem +2

    One of the weird things watching people's reactions to this episode has taught me is that most of said reactors are younger than me, because none of them catch that Looney Tunes reference 16 makes. ("Where's the kaboom?! There was supposed to be a Cell-shattering kaboom!" is a reference to Marvin the Martian always trying to blow up Earth and being foiled, then saying "Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom!")
    Also, I'm sure someone else has probably already mentioned it somewhere in the comments, but the names of the Cell Jr.'s are all names of people who have voiced Cell in various dubs. Aside from Vegeta Jr. Jr., obviously. :P
    The final scene, with Gohan transforming, is where you can find the true Gohan fans among the reactors, because they are the only ones who truly appreciate it and see it for what it is. It's a bittersweet moment, because he's been forced to give in and do exactly what he least wanted to do. And he'd been forced to grow up, basically. It's a scene of a little boy becoming a man, and far too early. A lot of people claim to love Gohan and even say he's their favorite character, but they don't understand him at all. They see his rage moments and think it's cool, that he's a badass kid. But they don't like his actual character; they just like the moments where he's a badass, and they wish he'd be like that more. Basically, they want Goku but less goofy. It's honestly disrespectful to him as a character. It's always refreshing to see another person who loves Gohan for who he actually is, so kudos to you. :)

    Something that the commentary talks about when it comes to Gohan's transformation is something that not a lot of people pick up on:
    Gohan's transformation is not a triumph, it's a tragedy. Gohan is not like his dad, he hates fighting. He hates violence in general, at least at this age. He's just not that sort of person. He doesn't fight out of a love for fighting, but as a reflex for protecting innocent people.
    Goku fights with a smile on his face, relishing the challenge, and can stop at any moment he feels like. Gohan fights with either grim determination, or absolute fury and hatred. Goku fails to see just how painful and traumatic this whole experience is for him, and that Gohan's fighting fury doesn't come from a place of excitement or even fear, but from a place of pain and hatred, not until it is too late and Gohan turns into a vicious monster.
    And for SuperKamiDende's sake, HE IS 11! How dare Goku turn his own son into what is effectively a child soldier?
    Goku was wrong. Gohan is not the person to keep the planet protected, to dedicate himself to being a warrior. Sure, later he is more comfortable in fighting, but even then it's more of a casual hobby.
    Gohan is a good person, he is kind and caring and intelligent, and loves to help people. But he is not a warrior, not like Goku or Vegeta or Piccolo or the rest in general. He doesn't like hurting people. Or rather, he doesn't WANT to hurt people, and he is afraid of letting himself like it.

    1 thing I thought about with 16 and gohan. In the original, there were a few filler episodes after piccolo kidnapped gohan where gohan meets a little robot. They both get trapped in a cave and the robot sacrifices itself so gohan can get out and live. Not only is it filler, but I think most people either don't know about it or forgot. But I think 16 being a robot and gohan seeing his sacrifice brought back that memory on top of everything else.
