  • Behind the ubiquitous fall attraction is an industry grown around technology. Companies design mazes for clients and tour the United States machine-planting corn or whittling away at pre-planted fields.
    Corn maze construction is a niche industry, but the technology behind it, not so much. The key player in the corn maze game is a tool you probably use every day.

    My wife and I go to a corn maze every fall, we’ve done it every year since we’ve been together. Patterns just to name a few have been Cinderella, Día de los Muertos, Mermaids, Alice in Wonderland, and this year was Vampires
    I’m always eager to see what pattern they’ll do next, and it’s cool to learn how it’s done

    So there are people who will voluntarily enter a maze for fun. Nice!

    I've never been in a corn maze (they're really not a thing here) so it's fascinating to see the scale on which they're operating in the States - wow! Given these complex designs clearly intended for aerial viewing, do any locations also do small-plane trips or balloon rides for customers to view from air, in addition to on-foot exploration...?

      Some of them have observation towers that you can view the maze from.

      Ours had deer hunting stands turned observation desks lol. Idk if ours had any cool aerial design but during the day they turning it into a learning adventure for us student's every school did a field trip. They cut the corn down for the maze, you were tripping over dead stalks the whole time lol. Lovely memories, worth a visit if you're ever state bound in fall.

    :50 Corn mazes have been around much earlier than 1993. Our nearby pick your own strawberry farm had a large corn maze in the late eighties. Is cheddar referring to corn mazes specifically using GPS to layout the maze?

    • @sapuseven
      @sapuseven Před rokem +1

      Do you really think this is significant enough to have food shortages? It's like you're going to the beach, taking a bucket of sand and saying "the beach is destroyed".
      Edit: I did some quick math, assuming one person needs about 0.05 acres of corn to be fed for a year, and you look at a ~10a field (like at 4:20), this makes 200 people in total. Assuming 1/10th is cut away, the "waste" would barely be enough for 20 people, which is nothing compared to the millions of people who suffer from food shortages. Also, as the video stated, there is another method to grow the field: by simply not planting the free areas.
      Now you see how stupid your reasoning is?

    • @Sinaeb

      What actually happens to the moon corn, assuming the location is using that method? Do they just use it as biomass for silage or similar...? (I'm assuming it's not ripe yet when they mow it, given how green these pics are?)
