Whammy: The All New Press Your Luck Peter Tomarken Pilot

- Christmas comes a little early this year...on May 19th, 1984 a contestant by the name of Michael Larson broke the bank on the game show "Press Your Luck" by figuring out the pattern on what seemingly was a random game board. Since many game show fans know the story of the "Press Your Luck" 'scandal', I thought I would do something different and share with you something VERY RARE! When GSN decided to revive the show as "Whammy: The All New Press Your Luck", Todd Newton took the helm of the new version. But what many people don't know is, Peter Tomarken taped a pilot. Todd is a fantastic host and did a wonderful job on the show, but game show fans rejoice as here it is...the "Whammy" pilot starring Peter Tomarken! Enjoy! The Winker
- Zábava
He still had it. Actually, he never even lost it. Don't get me wrong. Todd Newton did a fine job hosting Whammy, but there are just some hosts that fit game shows like a hand in glove, and Tomarken fit Press Your Luck in the same way that Allen Ludden fit Password, Dick Clark fit Pyramid, Bob Barker fit The Price Is Right, and yes...even you, Wink, fit Tic Tac Dough.
And don't forget Jack Barry with The Joker's Wild. Can't picture Snoop Dogg as host.
Richard Bowley Yeah, that revival is one I will not watch because Snoop Dogg is an ASSHOLE.
And richard dawson with Family Feud
And, to include one from across the pond, Bradley Walsh with The Chase
Exzctly, @Doc Trowser.....this game show was TOTALLY Peter Tomarken's territory....PERIOD END!!!!
Peter certainly had a knack for creating energy and excitement on the original series, and this pilot was no exception either! :-)
Wow, it's as if Peter never left the show since 1986. He did a fantastic job. The Winker strikes again! Thanks Wink.
Golbez1991 Makes me wish there was a 90's version and the graphics had that 16/32-bit Amiga feel to them.
And TBH, this should've lasted as long as Wheel of Fortune
Loved the CBS version.
whammy;WASS UP!!
R.I.P. Peter Tomarken one of my favorite game show hosts and R.I.P. his wife Kathleen as well
His wife passed away too??
@@damienchance2622 Sadly, yes. They were both killed in a plane crash.
@@damienchance2622 they both died in an airplane accident at the morning of March 13, 2006.
Peter Tomarken will always be Mr. Press Your Luck!
I liked the round one gameplay of this pilot where everyone got three spins over the gameplay of the eventual series where players took turns and spun until they froze and took their money into the final round or hit a Whammy.
Wow Peter hosted like he never left the show don't understand how Todd got the job but this was a good treat!
Derrick Merritt my understanding is it had to do with Peter's age, but i could be wrong.
@@marcpower4167 same thing happened to gene Rayburn when match game was brought back in 1990 with Ross Shaffer gene was passed over due to age even tho bert convy hosted the pilot
@@marcpower4167 If that's true then it's a shame. I can't see him in this video, but I can hear him and he sounds just as good as when he hosted the first version of PYL. He's even kept that wacko sense of humor I love so much.
Peter Tamarkin died in a plane crash .. not sure but ..is that when ? Todd Newton got the job ?
@@vmancuzzo Peter and his wife Kathleen died in a plane crash in 2006
Peter should've hosted this version. Nothing against Todd Newton who was a fine host but this was Peter's show
WAS.
Could not have said it better myself.
Newton wasn't bad, but yes, but when you think of PYL, you think Peter.
HBK19971 facts
Amen to that!
How long did this last?
Thank you Peter for pressing our luck!! You'll be sadly missed but I hope this show returns
Nope, with Peter gone, the show needs to stay gone
Hello, did you hear?
@@tiffanymorgan6562 Well, Elizabeth Banks is doing the show, and it's in it's......5th year on ABC, and it's doing good in ratings.
Peter seemed to be completely at home hosting this.
jaykay18 That's because this was his game
Joey Lamontagne Right, which is why I said that.
Todd was an okay host but this was totally Peter Tomarken's domain! R.I.P Peter
Gary was a good announcer but, he could not fill the shoes of the #OG #pressyourluck announcer Rod Roddy. Just saying, y'all
Duh, of course he was at home hosting this because this was his territory -PERIOD!
Thanks for posting this pilot! I never knew in my wildest dreams that he was supposed to be the host of Whammy!!! That's LITERALLY surprising!
This is pretty neat. I know that Brad Francini from ATGS also had a copy of the Tomarken pilot, but was NEVER allowed to show pictures from it on his website per request.
I didn't get to see this during its run but did watch numerous other TV game shows and I must say that Tomarken seems a VERY underrated emcee. Very down to Earth, has a great dry wit about him and not full of himself. It's sad to learn of his passing. He seems like such a likeable guy and a great television personality. He would be good at anything on TV, I'm sure. Another underrated host I'd like to give a shout to is the late Jack Clark, who hosted the shows Dealer's Choice and Cross Wits.
Steve Blaugh You know, Peter was good with NBC's "Hit Man" in early 1983. Due to ratings it got cancelled. Fate did have it's way and "Press Your Luck" debuted in September that year on CBS.
0:44 - 0:45 Whammy: *"WAZZUUUUUUUP!!"*
RIP Peter Tomarken
Peter saying "back in the chips" hit me in the nostalgia.
No idea why they thought anybody else could hold his turtleneck.
This is quite a cool rarity. Todd Newton is great as a game show host, but I'm with the group here. This was Peter's show. All they needed was Rod Roddy as announcer and it would be 1984 all over again. RIP Peter Tomarken and Rod Roddy.
I agree, Peter and Rod were the dynamic duo of #pressyourluck
Thank you wholeheartedly for this indeed, Wink
Awesome!! You did it again Wink. This one is really great to see. Keep em comin!!
I've been waiting 12 years to see this. Amazing.
Thank you Wink for posting and for entertaining us as the host of Tic Tac Dough, Trivial Pursuit, The New High Rollers, Debt, and other great shows. From this pilot, I would've chosen Peter to host the series as this proves he never missed a beat from the original PYL though Todd Newton was also a great choice as host.
Todd Newton is cool, but it makes you wonder why they didn't just have Peter host the revival.
Because FremantleMedia, that's why.
Peter Tomarken passed away before the revival
@@dennisfodor7010 Whammy! ran from 2002-03. Tomarken didn't die until 2006.
@@LeoVargas94Oficial or, or, hear me out...they wanted to get someone younger. Just Saying. Todd did a good job.
Dennis Fodor well since he hosted a special episode I’d say that’s false
I'd like to imagine there's an alternate universe where Peter didn't die in that aircraft accident and instead hosted this new Press Your Luck :)
And that the same alternative universe you mentioned would use the new “Whammy” format rather than the old “Press your Luck” format, because as mentioned in a Press Your Luck Documentary, the old board was a dinosaur compared to the new one.
Robbie Walker Seen the promos for the new version? It’s the upgraded dino.
Now that I seen Peter's Pilot. I so wanna see Todd's Pilot
I still remember watching Peter on "Hit Man" which debuted January 3, 1983. I felt that show got a bit of an early pulled plug. Unfortunately the ratings didn't pan out but Peter was sensational hosting that and everything else he did too, from "Press" to "Bargain Hunters", "Wipeout" and "Paranoia". It still is hard to fathom that he died the way he did. Peter's spirit most definitely lives on and indeed, he seemed completely at home hosting this. I very much enjoy Todd Newton's work too. I e-mailed him about 8 years ago and he replied in kind which I very much appreciated. I had hoped Todd would have gotten "The Price is Right" hosting gig back in 2007.
Todd does in fact host TPIR - the travelling version that goes to theatre venues across the country. Tickets are about $100 each to go and be a part of it, though - probably how the prize costs and Todd's salary are funded.
Tommarken would have been a much better host. He still had it here.
Give me one good reason why he couldn't do the show. He had me smiling, really smiling.
Keith Evers He made it feel like vintage Press Your Luck
Joey Lamontagne
You mean in a bad way or in a good way?
In a good way, of course!
+Keith Evers me too!
Because FremantleMedia, that's why.
4:03-4:09 That's the N*SYNC Whammy, they changed it in Todd Newton's premiere, they should've kept it like this.
cutemimi25 might have been licensing rights, i realize those arent the original lyrics to bye bye bye but thats my theory and im sticking to it.
They kept it in Whammy Interactive on GSN.com
They also had a Rockettes whammy that was like "all your money's gone!"
You better cry cause your money going bye bye bye
Whammy: WHASSUP!
That Whammy I always hated since I was 12, and to be honest it knocked me out of my chair quite a few times.
2:26 The secret is a method known as "first Whammy come, first Whammy serve".
Peter Tomarken was PYL.
It's too bad Peter didn't host the series. I might have watched more.
peter tomarken died march 13th 2006 rod roddy died oct 27th 2003
So many versions of Whammy. There is this one where you get 3 spins in the 1st round and the 2 where you start with $1,000 and keep going till you hit a whammy. There's one with the big bank and one without it.
The Big Bank element was the only thing that redeemed the G and M/GEM and CAR/both halves of the key requirement to win the car. Getting through this without being whammied was exceedingly difficult. And with only 65 episodes max per season (Cheapskates at Game Show Network!), ya know it ain’t happening without the big bank.
I actually like the idea of being able to whammy the Whammy. 👹
The prizes were much better on this show than when Todd started hosting.
lidsman2221 Pilot episodes almost always offer better prizes because they are not actually awarded.
lidsman2221 But the cash amounts were still crappy, but they kept the $2000+LOW (in which would create a much more interesting situation, since it almost looks like it's the top value cash amount on the board)
Another amazing find Winker.... now if only someone could find the Todd Newton pitch.
The Winker strikes again!
I had no idea Peter hosted the pilot!! This was such a treat to find!
What a treat!!! Thanks, Winker! RIP Peter and Kathleen
R I P Peter
Anyone else notice at 6:42 that the Whammy model is different? Instead of a green mask, he’s wearing purple, and he appears to be wearing a yellow shirt(?) Kinda strange how inconsistent the Whammies were from the beginning. Almost as if they were playing around with how he should really look like.
I wish Peter would have been named host for the all new version of Press Your Luck, Press Your Luck WAS and will ALWAYS be Peter's show
Amen, brother!
Thank you, Wink!
Wink, thanks for this awesome gem. :D Peter Tomarken really shined in this pilot; it was like he and the show hadn't left after 1986! :D
Great upload!
This is awesome. I loved Peter Tomarken.
So weird to see the other side of Peter's head. His podium was on the other side of the contestants in original PYL.
OMG! I never knew Peter hosted the Whammy! pilot. That was a great find!
I would love to host Press Your Luck or Whammy
Had no idea Peter did the pilot EP cause I'd only seen him guest host when Todd was hosting the show but that was for only 1 ep
I remember when GSN showed the commercial for Whammy! and showed the pilot. Peter will always be Mr. Press Your Luck. Todd did good on the show. To me there were a few things I didn't like about the show. One, there were too many prizes on the big board, a few of prizes were crazy (I.E. lobstergram), GEM car wasn't won during the first season and the Suzuki was won only on the tournament of champions (maybe another episode as well). If Press Your Luck make a comeback in the future, they may use the dollars shown on gameshow marathon in 2006.
WINK!!! Youse the man (no spelling typo). I just noticed a dying art. Most of these game shows don't give you the contestant's last name anymore.
For those asking why Todd was given the nod to host the show over Peter, I had heard it's because GSN believed that in the case the show was a flop, regardless of who hosted it, Todd hosting would keep Peter's legacy intact & not really hurt Todd since up to that point Todd was most known for hosting "Hollywood Showdown".
+Ultimate23Dragon That's fasinating.
I must admit I'm pleasantly surprised I just stumbled upon this clip today and had no idea that Peter did the pilot for the show I remember watching it of course on GSN and I love Todd Newton but it's clear that this should have been Peter's show he did the original and you can see watching this that he still was the only one that could host that show
Never seen this before
Looks fantastic!
I loved whammy I love it’s all modern style wish it was here in the uk that would be fun to watch
I grew up with this version (I was 8 when this came out), but I really like the OG version better. Even the 2019 version looks a lot like its 1980s predecessor.
This early episode with the OG host is cool but it feels like a weird time warp. I’m surprised he wasn’t wearing his traditional suit and tie...
This is really cool, though. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Awesome pilot, Wink! This was a great GSN revival, and I'm surprised just how similar the pilot is to the show we eventually saw. Tomarken does an excellent job as always (I seem to recall him using that cheetahs in heat line on an original episode of PYL, yes?). That Whammy Guard idea is a bit of a concern, as it gives a perfect question round player a bit of an unfair advantage in the final round, so I'm kinda glad it was dropped. GM cards are the exact same gimmick as the GEM/key cards we saw later; ridiculous how far ahead some of these things are planned!
Benjamin Kellog Which was why the GEM wasn't won during season 1. The Suzuki was only won during the tournament of champions episode (maybe another episode too).
Benjamin Kellog I think the Whammy Guard for having a perfect question round is a good idea, especially if you have 12 spins to deal with yourself and you left round 1 with 3 whammies (which could be possible in this version). Also, didn't Wheel Of Fortune adopted the 1/2 car thing on their wheel in their game?
Peter really enjoyed being back on PYL, they should've took him back, and left Todd with something else.
Todd did a great job, but didn't seem like PYL with Peter
Didn't seem like PYL *without Peter

Whammy: The All New Press Your Luck With Peter Tomarken From 2002
Wow... I never knew that Peter hosted this version of press your luck... I thought it was always Todd.... This is quiet interesting!
Just when I thought I saw the last press your luck episode. It sad he no longer with us
This is so Strange I never knew Peter Hosted the Premier I knew him since I saw the Old Press Your Luck just before the New One Aired on GSN but Man this is Strange to Believe he Hosted the Premier before Todd took over and the Rest just took Shape on it's Own but Sadly now a Few Years after it Aired we lost Peter Tomarken so R.I.P. you Legendary Host if it wasn't for you we wouldn't have a Classic Revival of the Old one with Elizabeth Banks
I love this game.... Gsn please revive it
If they ever reboot this show (again) they should combine elements from both versions.
ThreeEyedPea I agree with you.
Yeah. The Big Bank and the Double Whammy for sure.
Well, it's about to come true. It's being revived once again after 16 years to ABC
@@TheDollarichboy The original show.

Awesome
Surprised she passed that spin with such a small lead. Obviously it worked out but the probability of him hitting anything other then a whammy were higher then hitting the whammy.
They should've kept the Whammy Guard concept, although make it easier to get example if you get 9 spins you get a Whammy Guard.
Well if you answered all questions correctly without a multiple choice answer, you deserve it
6:42 And if you buzz in and answer all 4 questions correctly, U not only get 12 spins, but you get yourself a Whammy Guard.
Wow! Had no idea they did a Whammy pilot with Peter! I would say that nothing can touch the original CBS version. The Tribune Studios version was disappointing (for me) on a number of fronts. Firstly, I have never been a Todd Newton fan - he might have been good on "Hollywood Showdown" but this was not his vehicle.
It's interesting that all three players got three spins off the bat, and in the actual broadcast version, were started at $1,000 each and challenged in a game of "chicken". I'm sure this was done in the name of reducing the actual broadcast time from 28 minutes to the 19 minutes we have here - thank the greed of the TV industry for that and other take-backs.
I am also not a fan of the toteboards - the monitors are too tiny to see the spin counts. Give me the old eggcrate displays from CBS days. The oval board is not a visual improvement either - the original CBS "Press Your Luck" and its ABC predecessor, "Second Chance" both had square boards that were more visually appealing to me.
The whole Double Whammy thing I've never cared for. For silly stuff like that, there were shows like "The Cheap Show", "The Gong Show", "Beat The Clock", "Almost Anything Goes" and more. I don't know who thought, "Hey, wouldn't it be funny if a contestant lost all their money AND got a physical punishment?" It wasn't. It isn't.
I wish that modern game show producers would stop messing with perfection. Lots of game shows in the 1970s - when the USA was the homeland for them - were brilliantly produced. It's distressing to me that the new breed of producers are having to "leave their mark" on classic with stupid gimmicks or wholesale rule changes.
I'll stick with the original CBS repeats on CZcams and Buzzr, thanks very much.
Mr. M, thanks for this video!
Shouldn't have been self-contained, either...meaning didn't have returning champions.
The whammy guard was different.
R I P peter tomarken
Why didn't Peter get the gig for this show? Was it his decision, or GSN's? It's not like he hadn't been on there before. If any of you GSN lovers remember back when they first launched, he was the host for Prime Games at night, hosting mini-games and doing an excellent job as always.
Peter Tomarken was an insane/private person who was also a private pilot. He indeed passed away, nearly a decade ago (along with his wife), while flying a patient to the hospital. May he RIP! 1942 - 2006.
Nice! Now all we need is someone to post the Newton one.
Yeah! That would be cool.

0:45-0:48 WHAT'S UP!!!
I think that Peter Tomarken was made for Press Your Luck. That's not to say that Todd Newton didn't do a good job, which he did. Or Jim Peck, who hosted the predecessor to Press Your Luck, called Second Chance. He also did good, but was no Peter Tomarken. Personally, Todd Newton would have been my choice to replace Bob Barker as the Price Is Right host instead of Drew Carey.
I would've gone the opposite route: have Peter Tomarken do TPIR; especially recently I've felt that Peter would've just been a natural fit for TPIR and would feel far more comfortable on camera than Drew Carey (assuming an alternate universe where Peter were still alive today).
@@AnimatedIdiotGuide Not to mention him being back at CBS at TV City.
Do u have the other 2 pilots
Wow, Michelle passed at the right time, with only a $600 margin.
TBH I like this R1 as opposed to what got put on the air. 3 spins to press or pass as opposed to $1,000 each having a turn at the board and adding whammies to board after all 3 (or less) had a turn at the board.
I agree. If they were going to get rid of the first question round, this format works.
I Get to see this. :3
I wonder if Peter would've expressed interest in hosting the current version of Press Your Luck on ABC if he had survived that plane crash. Or did he retire after this version aired?
ABC probably still would’ve kept a younger face like Elizabeth Banks to host the current revival, but had Peter survived and was still alive, both ABC and Elizabeth would’ve loved to have any and every opportunity to bring Peter on the show
Winker strikes again!!!
You can tell that Peter IS Press Your Luck. Todd was not a bad host, but Press Your Luck was Peter's game, like Dick Clark IS Pyramid.
Exactly! The same with Bob Barker and The Price Is Right and Monty Hall with Let's Make A Deal!!!!
+K Moore Don't forget Allen Ludden and Password. Certain hosts make certain game shows their own.
It largely depends on who first hosts a particular show. Any later hosts are compared to that person.
True. But who would remembers Art Fleming vs Alex Trebek in Jeopardy!, Pat Sajak vs Chuck Woolery on Wheel of Fortune and even Hollywood Squares, it's either Peter Marshall, John Davidson, or Tom Bergeron
Kei Nanjo It depends on a person's age. I remember all those hosts. Art Fleming WAS Jeopardy and Peter Marshall WAS DEFINITELY Hollywood Squares.
i hope whammy pilot #2 is added on youtube
Dr. Evil is a contestant on the pilot he needs his big bucks to rule the world
Ah. Okay so Peter did introduce the new version of Whammie: Press Your Luck. Good to know.
When I was younger this version of whammy scared me
doesn't Barry look like Dr. Evil
The grey shirt, and line on the face xD that man is doctor evil
0:46: The Whammy character got a better design to compliment the new board.
@Robbie Walker What do you think of the recent revival on ABC?
Michelle got incredibly lucky. Passing the last spin when you’re only ahead by $600 9 times out of 10 would be an unbelievably stupid move.
And we are going to have a new host named Todd Newton Peter
i don't remember as a regular. Cool. :)
The things to the left of the set that look like giant fingers, look like part of the Waiting Game set.
This was very well done, but they should have had the $1,000 start off, and play chicken by adding more whammys in Tomarken's game. I also loved the "Big Bank," spot where you get the money lost to the whammy! I never understood why this show didn't last longer than a year. Also the "whammy card," was a cool concept.
I would love to just kept the game like the original (2x Question Rounds, and 2X Board Rounds) but with the addition of Spin Again, and Big Bank (or Personally $High Dollar Amount and Lose 1 Spin Or Whammy + 1 Spin)
Literally the only reason this show didn't last longer than a year was because Game Show Network was preparing to become the reality show-based GSN two years after it premiered, so it got rid of every original game show it had on the schedule at that point (except Lingo). Had the network not changed over, Whammy! might've lasted longer.
Kei Nanjo how the double your dollars space or add a one plus a spin .
The only reason I can see Peter not being chosen to host is his age. Stupid reason, but that's how many TV execs think.
Lingo came later, and thankfully they let Chuck Woolery host that.
peter tomarken died march 13th 2006 and rod roddy died oct.27th 2003
peter tomarken died march 13th2006 and rod roddy died oct.27th 2003
The company that owns the Lingo format went with name recognition rather than youth, and they saw that Chuck could still do it. Fremantle, on the other hand, didn't think with an open mind. They were the ones who made the decision, not GSN.
Peter shouldve kept hosting this no hate agianst todd newton but the new whammy game should've never update its changes
Rip peter tho the whammies will remember u in heaven :(
Reminds me, when Tic Tac Dough was revived in 1990, they brought in Patrick Wayne, and a whole news set as well. Didn't feel the same without wink(and the original series wasn't the same after wink left with Jim Caldwell replacing him). Caldwell and Wayne were ok, but Wink made the show
