COSTIA and what it is...
This koi parasite is extremely small (10-20 microns long) and a magnification of 100 times is the absolute minimum required to identify costia, 400 times is ideal. When taking a skin scrape and looking for Costia, try to avoid using a thick layer of mucus and add a drop or two of water to the slide. Costia is a very fast moving parasite and looks in shape similar to a comma, search the entire slide carefully but you will often find it easiest to identify this parasite along the edge of the mucus layer where this meets water.
Costia affects both the skin and gills of koi, and left undetected will multiply at an alarming rate and can soon cause mortalities of koi.
Symptoms of infection include excess mucus production, respiratory distress, and general debilitation, the eyes of your koi may also appear sunken.
The koi parasite Costia has a very simple life cycle, using a process known as binary fission, meaning each parasite divides into two.
Costia infestations can be treated using a mixture of Malachite Green and Formaldehyde at the same dose rate as described above for white spot. Another effective treatment is potassium permanganate
Costia is a minute Flagellate with 3-4 flagella. It affects both the skin and gills of Koi, and reproduces itself by binary fission. Infestations of this parasite can appear very rapidly indeed, and Koi suffering infestations exhibit the classic symptoms of lethargy, clamped fins, rubbing and flashing and the skin can take on a grey white opaqueness.
Costia normally only affects fish that have already been debilitated by some other cause, and can often be seen on Koi as a secondary parasite.
Remember a high magnification must be used to view these parasites (400 x) and staining is recommended for positive identification.

Andy you are so authentic and you march to the beat of your own drum. Big respect ❤️
🤞this works perfectly for you
I like that, and it’s true👍
Thanks for that 😉👍
you might already know this but a good way to dose treatments in steady is to fill a big bucket with the dose then syphon in over pond returns using a small airline. that way it just trickles in over a good period.
Hydrogen Peroxide is also good for algea and green water 100ml for 1500gal. Some people put it in as a thicker dose to clear the pond walls I dont think I would do that I make between 100 and 150ml in a watering can and spread it round pond another point here is it will also get rid of fluke.
Interesting video as always Andy 👍👍
Thank you 😊 👍
Very informative video Andy as always 👍 hope it has done the trick , looking forward to your next video 👍👍👍
Thanks for that...😉👍
Nice update mate I've been really lucky so far and only had flukes but I've probably jinxed myself now. Stay safe Andy 👍
Glad your ponds Flukes have gone. Hopefully the Costia doesn't follow them..🤞🤞😉👍
Koi are equipped with a long-term memory they also have the same senses humans have. Not only are Koi great at remembering faces but they can even recognize their own names and if you talk to them when at the pond they will come and take food from your hand.
Outside of Japan Koi live for around 15 years, while its 40 years in Japan. koi fish can live for much longer in optimal conditions and where they can keep active and have things to investigate and play with.
There have been many koi who live for over 100 years in Japan.
Very interesting video Andy👍😊. I’ve never treated with the 2 separate elements so definitely looking forward to seeing how you think it performed👍😊. Good luck🤞🤞🤞
Thanks for that Phil. Yeah interesting trying the separates.. So far so good. 👍😉🤔
Hi Andy belting video as per usual mate. My koi have just started to do the same so going to scrap over weekend. Interested to see what you do to tackle the green water pal 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hiya, thanks for that. Been enjoying your videos with the green water saga... Fingers crossed you get it nailed..
@@KoiPondLifestyle cheers pal, a lot of people with same issue as me. But that magiclear worked tbh. So may finally get to FOK now 😀 keep em rolling pal 🎥
Great update Andy 👍
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it 😊 👍
First a warning check the little cup that measures liquids some companies have cut the size down from 25ml to 20ml. Green water I like Barley Straw but this takes time to work around 5 weeks. Greenaway/PondKlear and Algorem all work but take 24 hours and can be dangerous to fish care has to be taken however in extreme pea soup green I have used Algorem which works fine. Something you may not think of using is Hydrogen Peroxide my pond 1500 gal I put 150ml into the water over an hour it clears green water in a day again its something the fish are used to as you use it with PP.
Nearly five and a half thousand subscribers can’t be wrong. Good luck with hopefully removing the Costia completely Buddy
Thanks Paul..🤞🤞😉
Good video Andy 👍
Thank you..😉👍

I had awful issues with flukes this year, thankfully the ponds sorted out now and come out the other side. After treating the pond I'm using Virkon Aquatic tablets now on a weekly basis, what a difference it's made to my pond, I certainly recommend it Andy!!
Thanks for that. I've been looking into Virkon tablets. But don't they kill all bacteria in the pond and filters?🤔🤔
@@KoiPondLifestyle I haven't found that, all my levels are perfect no ammonia, nitrite and just a fraction of nitrate. The fish are more active, and any sores they had from the flukes are all healed up without me having to intervin, plus their appetite has increased.
Thanks for that feedback 👍
check out this video,

Thanks for that. I'll have a look...cheers 😉👍
Green water how often have I said Barley Strew to speed it up drop it in a bucket fill with hot boiling water leave to cool and drain the water off and drop the water it in the pond. Another good thing is UV-A bulb in place of the UVC bulb.
the weather looks as bad there as it is in Salford. Hope the treatment worked ok
Just use PP it's much cheaper
Hope it works Andy. Have the same problem in my pond will be using Kusuri Potassium Permanganate fingers crossed :)
PP always worked for me on costia, just keep it purple for 4 hrs, it's quick aswell rather than waiting day's for other treatment's to work.
@@stephenwilliams-vl6db does PP work on any eggs or costia not yet hatched yet etc?
@@richardc1983 costia dont lay eggs they reproduce by cell division so if treated properly you should kill the lot in one go.
Formalin 60% MG 40% Then put a 10% of each in every 2 weeks all summer. It keeps my bugs away. I would of also put a 50% solution of Parakill in a couple of days before.
This is the old school’s way always worked
Hiya, yeah my supplier is old school and always recommends the old school methods...😉👍
You can get it cheaper if you shop round, 500ml under £20 for them both I've just got them
Malachite 2% mate, dose together
Sorry to here you have bugs again that mixture is so confusing, to work out and upsetting not seeing your fish in the sky dome . stay safe and well
Thanks Carol. 😊
In the end how often did you re dose after initial dose? NT labs say you repeat it daily for 5 days?
Hiya, I stated the doses in the video but they were different to NT labs. 😉👍
@@KoiPondLifestyle sorry I meant did you have to do it again after the 7 days later.
£15 for 500ml of Formalin? I pay £17 for 2.5 litres. Try APC pure for Formalin I also believe they sell Malachite green crystals. So you can mix your own stock solution
Thanks for that..😉👍
Your not on your own Andy I haven't ad any thing in my pond yet
Fingers crossed it stays that way for you..🤞😉

Thick netting on the pond today seen 3 herons around herons are not too much of a problem as they walk into water and my pond being 2 feet high out of the water, they seem not to bother however the Crane is another story up to 6ft tall will try to get into a pond being mistaken for the Heron most of the time. Just one of the problems of being close to a nature reserve.
Fingers crossed the Heron was just passing by...🤞🤞
@@KoiPondLifestyle No they come over the house all the time nature reserve and Kielder Lake are only a few miles away they know its difficult to land and dont seem to bother I dont know about the Puffins I see them some times flying past they live on the coast seagulls are the worst hundreds fly over at first light from the coast heading for the rubbish tips inland they make such a noise .
@@KoiPondLifestyle Down to David’s Pond today a couple of miles walk he had a few sick fish seems a mix of fluke and Trichodina
he put PP into the pond 14G for his pond I said put a half dose in when that goes brown then when ready put 200ml of Hydrogen Peroxide in.
My pond I like to keep it going for a full day around 8 hours.
An alternative to PP which I have also used is Formaldehyde which is easy to use and quicker and I think does a better job than PP and works good with fluke.
Yeah I was impressed with the separate doses I used for Costia and hopefully sorted any Flukes at the same time?
Gutter about the costia Andy buddy I'm not long over bloody flukes 🤦🤦🤦🧁👍👍👍
Cheers Vince. It was going to happen at some point so hopefully at least costia is out of the way for now..🤔😉👍
@@KoiPondLifestyle tell me about it Andy bruva I should be spawning and growing right now not stripping down my systems and rebuilding the whole fish house 😪🧁👍👍👍
