I like 2x11 so much. Especially 40t cassete and short cage derailiuer. Super quick shifting, always accurate, resistant to hits, replaceble lowest cogs, gears close to each other, front shifting work even in horrible mud, no chainfall thanks front derailleuer...

Just buy a spare hanger for your specific bike. When in doubt its easily changed and if it doesn't fix your problem you can at least rule that component out.

I bought a brand new bike 2 years ago, and together with the bike I told the shop to order a new derailleur hanger. They questioned why I would want that with a new bike...
I'm just lost for words by people like that and especially when people like that service bikes all day every day. You can bend the hanger and/or derailleur on your first ride so of course it's wise to just get one and be prepared.

@@MehYam2112 So you're just going to throw away the whole bike when you get gear shifting issues then. Nice.

@@a8f235 ??? No, my point is that you can’t trust the alignment on a new hanger, so it may not give you the correct read on your alignment issues. Hanger gauge/adjuster tool is your friend.

Nice vid, will certainly use the tip on future restoration projects. Greetings from the Netherlands!

My hanger was not bent, but it's mounting surface portion was misshapen and worn. I shimmed here and there til I got it straight. Chain jumping solved.

My sram eagle setup (sx derailleur lol) was working perfectly. It had been a while so I replaced the shift cables and took the pulley wheels off the derailleur to clean and regrease them. Now it doesn't want to stay in the 42t (11th) gear. Either wants to shift to the 10th or 12th. Super annoying..

My symtom for a bent hanger was I set the cable tension so the middle gears work, then going up the cassette I would have too much cable tension, then for the smaller gears I had too little cable tension!
Remember with cable tension you can only have too much or too little, not both! This problem made me swap out my whole garbaruk 11spd groupset for 12spd sram eagle and I still had the same problem. It was a brand new frameset so a bent hanger didn't even cross my mind.

Also, I understand you set the tension while in the smallest cog but since I was having issues, I set the tension so middle was aligned because I could visually see it better.

Take into consideration that newer 12 speed derailleurs have a slight pulley misalignment from factory.

I have a 1x12 drivetrain with XTR derailleur. I did have a bent derailleur and have bent it back in shape. It did fix my derailleur for the most part, but now I have nothing to adjust when it's on the largest cog to avoid the chain going too far. The adjustment screw is all the way out so I can only adjust the cage outward. If I backpedal at the largest cog there will be slight click-click noises, so I would just like to know if the cage really should be slightly more inward to get a better alignment with the upper cog. It's such and extreme angle so I just find it hard to really evaluate if the pulley is centered with the cog or what the cause really is.

  • @princeedmunddukeofedinburg

I have a 1 by 10 conversion, when pedaling the noise from the chain is very distinctive even tho it's lubed, been to few bike shops and they told me that, there are no bends and cracks and it's fine but I am just not feeling it...

If the spring between pulleys which pulls them vertically is frozen and doesnt move freely, does it mean it's bent?

Have the problem where chain gets off the lower pulley. Swapped to a new derailur and the problem persists. Guess I’m the faulty 10%. 😢
