As a person who lives in an apartment, the advice of just planting the trees you want in pots and just bringing them with you when I am ready for my first property is such great advice. I have a lemon tree that I started from seed 3 years ago as an experiment to see if I can get it to grow. It was my first toe dip into gardening. This conversation has reinspired me and now I have set a new goal for my lemon tree and 3 other fruit trees I would like (cherry, peaches, orange); to start growing them for my future dream homestead property. Thanks!!
Jacque, to help make the journaling successful, just make it very accessible. Either carry a small notebook with you while you are gardening or have it in your greenhouse if you end your day there. You can do it!
Potted trees do well anyway it so worth it, I was thinking the same thing, journal is going in the greenhouse!
I did this with a fig tree! She's still doing great.
That's a great idea! Plus, there are a bunch of fruiting bushes from bushel n berry that work great in pots. I grew tomatoes, basil, and potatoes (on a whim bc it had so many roots) on my apt balcony and I think you can do a lot while waiting to buy property. 😁
Yes to a fruit guild Jacques! So great to get the word out to the mainstream gardening community. For ours, we're adding mini swales on contour to make its own irrigation system. Great for rainwater capture and then may plant a water-loving, native groundcover in the base of the swale. Yay God!
I've been wanting fruit trees for a while now. They are always too expensive at the nursery though. No point in getting one tree, I thought.
I'd never heard of bare root trees.
Might have just ordered 6 dwarf varieties for the price of one potted tree 😁

I recently moved from southern CA to KY, and having a “real” winter where there is NO GARDENING has been the absolute hardest part! Pure torture. I’m having to shift from a very impulsive gardening style to actually planning ahead (which is not my nature). I’m looking to plant some bareroot fruit trees this year as I have much more space than I did in CA, so that’s exciting. I got to grow over 20 varieties of tomatoes at the same time which was such an expansion from the two or three I could fit before. I’ve already ordered the Cream Sausage to add to this year’s lineup. As I look at my snow covered space, I feel like the lady in the old Mervyns commercial waiting for the store to “open, open, open!” C’mon spring!

Jacques, the Watchman is a stunning hollyhock. One came up in my garden that could only have come from the Hummingbird Blend from Botanical Interests that I sowed in 2022. I saved seeds so I can have it in my garden always. It's that beautiful. Can't wait to see it in your garden. ~ Lisa

Hi guys... I'll be spacing out everything more this year. Interesting conversation on rust, iI plant pretty tight and rust got to my garlic..On average we receive 40 inches of rain per year, humid in July.. wider spacing, better airflow. Oh well I'm have to make another area for growing in my yard😄

Yes, growing more beans as it was a great experience and shelling in winter was a great garden task.
The mosquitoes I said, check the gutters, rain barrels and ponds. If they aren’t there then it’s somewhere in the neighborhood. Neighbor down the road had a fix it shop and piles of tires-soon as they were gone so we’re the mosquitoes.
We are in severe drought and it’s finally turned in to a normal winter-so Happy! 8” of snow Tuesday, 3” last night and up to 12” starting tonight 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. Not too happy about below zero after.
I’m so happy I kept notes as we just opened the last of ‘22 tomatoes and they had such a great aroma. I quickly could see that I had planted mainly hybrids with a couple heirlooms. The 25 heirlooms last year were not the greatest and think we are losing the true tomato flavor to less acid and more sweetness. They don’t keep well and a lot of waste.
Yes, in Z5a, WI it is non stop planting May to June then a couple weeks off and July to august for fall crops. The whiplash weather we have had this past year is trying. Last January it rained, too hot, then 90s in May that advanced crops too far and frost last weekend in May with no warning that killed a lot of plants, the wildfire smoke that kept us inside, the extreme heat dome 106*F-Halloween 36*, Thanksgiving 41* and Christmas 52* And Rain!! Top all that with severe drought and deer/rabbit pressure and if it wasn’t for fencing everything I would have nothing. 😂😂as I write two deer just came into the backyard. Oh man, hope I have the new arborvitaes fenced in good enough with all this snow the fences get shorter.
Enjoyed the show, so much to talk about and I’ve got cabin fever.
My best tomato so far is a Green Zebra from SD seed company, it is prolific and delicious, I’m in Serra Mesa.

30:39 Yeeeeehaaaaww!! Sounds like barefoot plants and possibly trees 🤞🤞🤞🤞 I’m hoping there will be an announcement for some low chill hour peach trees. It’s pretty hard to find them these days.
I just found this video this morning. Love it. A note re chill hours for fruit trees…it’s great to experiment and push the boundaries with chill hours but I would encourage you to only do that with a small portion of your fruit trees. While a fruit tree that needs 500 chill hours will grow fine in SD, if you do get fruit, there might not be much. Put your stone fruits in the coolest areas of your garden, away from reflected heat. Also, fruit trees need water regularly. I garden outside of Phoenix AZ.
Kevin: try some Greek Giant beans, also called Gigantes since they originated in Mexico. They can grow 12' up a bamboo teepee so they don't take a ton of room, and you can dry a year's worth of huge creamy white beans right on the teepee so super easy crop. Visually impressive, the hummingbirds love the flowers, and easy to store. And delicious.

Gigante beans are so delicious, very much worth it. I hope you find it to be as delicious as we do!

@@jacquesinthegardenOh man. That episode can’t come soon enough! Hemp and her sister are fascinating plants. They truly are! Some hemp plants can even run hot, and truck out elevated levels of various cannabinoids. There are different schools of thought on it too, whether changes in cannabinoid profiles are solely genetics or due in part to stressed conditions. Regardless, it’s interesting. Hermes are beyond fascinating too; they’re Jurassic Park-like plants. And now I’m off on a tangent. Anyway, looking forward to future episodes. 😊

My resolution is to do better about potting up seedlings when it's time to pot up (like when tomato seedlings get too big for their container but it's still too cold to put them out)

@@jacquesinthegardenand that’s why I’m starting seeds only the required number of weeks plus germination time. Potting up is time consuming, expensive and room hogs. Z5a.
Serious question for Jacques. Does your academic background draw you toward the literature re: topics like chill hours and if so, does that ever provide insight above and beyond conventional gardening advice?
You should try trello for long term goals to day-to-day task. Just a thought.
Yo Kevin for the corn problem... I think maybe you have been going too small I've been growing corn in Central pa for years in the garden and we do about 6 rows about 2 - 3 feet apart and about 20 - 30 feet long ... and we do that 1st planting like that .. then about 2 - 3 weeks later we always do a second planting ... then depending on conditions and to stager the harvest.... it makes sense .. try planting a larger area for the corn and I think you will do well ... by the way iv not heard you guys talk about it ... bu I SWEAR BY NEPTUNES HARVEST BRAND ORGANIC FERTILIZER. ESPECIALLY THE CRAB AND LOBSTER SHELL AMENDED INTO THE SOIL 2 WEEKS OR SO BEFORE PLANTING
I heard some edible mushroom variety consume nematodes, I wonder if this can combat your issue?
Would it be possible to have full 40 mins on a podcast feed somewhere instead of bunch 10 min episodes. It would make my life so much easier since i wait for all parts to come out anyway. And because adding a bunch of episodes to a queue can be a bit cumbersome sometimes i tend to miss stuff since it is easier to download one other ling podcast episode when im going outside and dont have internet connection.
Jacque, you didn't say all the tomatoes you are growing this year. Have you tired the lucky tiger ones? Also what peppers are you planning to grow? I tried the peach one last year but it was way too hot for my linking, lol.
I have tried lucky tiger and we thought they were pretty good but found them to be too sweet and not complex enough. Might try again though! The final pepper and tomato lineup is yet to be decided!

I have heard that once you plant peanuts you always have peanuts. If so, your peanuts are growing and reproducing?
I grow them in containers which helps solve some of that problem!

Jacques, I print a monthly, calendar off of the computer and add garden tasks on it through the year. That way it can be with me in the garden and I can easily write what I did in the garden, that day. And you can keep the calendar to refer to, later. Or you can use it to catalog into a computer log, later in the week. It works for me…. Maybe for you, too?
