Started on an MT-07, two years after taking the MSF and forgetting everything I learned. Putting around my residential area and avoiding major roadways and freeways for a few months was scary enough until I gained confidence and comfortability on the bike. My biking history has been a Ninja 400, zx6r, Marauder 800 and an R1 in that order. Definitely glad I took the time to learn on the smaller bikes first, but also definitely glad I got my R1. So far, respecting the machine and keeping the cockiness in check have proven to be a pretty successful formula.

@alabasteracolyte976 kinda what I said in my original comment, just respect the machine and go into each ride with humility and you'll be fine. If the superhawk is the bike I'm thinking of you should be okay, those didn't make nearly as much power as modern liter bikes. I'm not knocking it, just a fact that roughly 115hp will be more like a modern 600cc motorcycle.

Started totally fresh on a 2012 Triumph Speed Triple ABS 1050cc. Didn't even realize how terrifying it was until I did a unintentional power wheelie passing farm equipment. Obviously still dumb, I traded it in after a year for a 2018 Triumph Tiger 1200, which was MUCH heavier, but still had more power and torque with it's 1215cc engine. Loved that bike and did a couple cross country motocamping/offroad trips, but the weight and heat eventually got to be too much, and I wanted something with less power that matched my back-road commuting route better. Fell in love with Moto Guzzi, and after two years traded the Tiger in for a 2016 Moto Guzzi V7ii Stornello that I ADORE. It's everything I've wanted in a motorcycle, minus the suspension which is a simple enough fix. Everything else is amazing though, and I see myself sticking with this bike forever, and focusing on adding more bikes to the stable.

I agree with the last part of your comment (never tried a Triumph). I started with a Guzzi 750 Stornello 2016 as well few months ago after 20 years of a break riding (Honda & Suzuki) and I don't regret it. Since, I've tried a Guzzi Griso 1100 (powerfull) and a Guzzi California (too heavy) both good bikes but not so fun for a beginner in my opinion. I also tried the VT85 great bike but not for beginner neither, I think the new V7 special or Bobber 850 would be a good fit for a beginner or 1st bike, I tried them as well and they are light, fun, and safe bikes to ride.
The Stornello procures the pleasure of riding with enhancing the skills at the same time; good compromise for a first bike with it city and country/dirt road capacities. I'll keep mine as well, with the addition of another one when an new opportunity will pop-up.

I agree in most circumstances it is more wise to start on a lower displacement motorcycle. Coming from a zero motorcycle experience to going straight to a 1000 is a bit much. As soon as I completed the MSF I went to go to a dealership and purchased my first bike. I was looking at the zx6r however I just loved the body style of the new redesign of the zx10r. I did get the liter bike as my first bike however with all the riding assist it has I was able to work my way into the power this machine has. Safe to say if you know what you want I recommend to get what you want but to always ride within your limits and not the riders around you. Still love my bike and have no regrets but I respect the machine I ride. Good content as always

The first time i got on it and the front wheel came up was my "oh shit" moment, this thing could kill me. I rode it around in b mode for a month or two and slowly got the hang of everything and learned how the bike would react to inputs. If you take your time and don't get over confident you can start on anything, but I would not suggest to anyone to do that. If you want to start on something "fast" just get an mt07, it wont kill you but its plenty fast for the street.

I was on a rebel 250 for 3 weeks, a ninja 500 for 8 months and then the CBR1100 from there on. But let me say, the CBR1100 felt SO EASY.. low center of gravity and easy to flatfoot..and incredibly smooth. But it was good that I had the time on the other bikes.. I've ridden for over a decade and have never dropped a bike or been down (although had one tip over on sidestand). It's a good idea to start on something lightweight and cheap. And don't knock the little rebel 250.. I've often picked those up just to fix and flip and I've had fun on them.. even after riding superbikes..yes, I can hop on the rebel and enjoy the day. The rebel had a hp flaw most don't know about. The crankcase dump tube needs to be emptied frequently so the air filter doesn't get coated in oil but also relocated to the carb boot instead of the air filter. Honda put a nipple on the air filter and it ends up coating the air filter and it will steal power..more than you think.

Well said Yam. There is a thing that pilots call "seat time", and well worth obtaining some while the stakes are low (i.e. with a lighter, lower HP bike).
Fighter pilots start their training in slow prop planes for a good reason - you get seat time on the slow, cheap, stable, predictable, low power machine before you get trusted with the twitchy, unpredictable, expensive fast jet. Same principle applies to bikes, unless you have cash to burn totalling several sports bikes and sets of gear. Not to mention medical bills...

I "started" on a liter bike. It wasn't a great experience. It was also a death machine that I managed to put back together after I got it from Copart for $1000. I only wanted the engine, but fixing it to "ride" on felt like an option. It was fine around the neighborhood but I never got it licensed to put onto the road.

A 125 at age 55 - then a few years later (no riding) another 125; recently acquired a Suzuki GW250 (2019 with ABS) while living in China. I do really enjoy the 250 - it’s a bit heavy but really stable and smooth. I love getting out into the countryside and cruising - it’s enough for me (for now😉).

first ever street legal motorcycle was an electra glide (im currently 24 was 22 when i got it) was not impressed at all (still not impressed by the handling or power) but it makes cool noises and looks cool. i still own it but have recently added a superduke to the roster and holy fricking moly i love that bike. ive had it since start of september and have put 2300 miles on it. 650 mile day one day (tail of the dragon in a day trip) with the amount of tech it has (22 evo r has all the techy tech) you can literaly throw a day one rider that knows clutch control on it and let em rip. abs is phenomenal. if you downshift too hard it still regulates rear wheel slip to maintain control. the anti wheelie only lets the front wheel off the ground a 1/4 inch (only notice when you try to turn and the bars just float left and right lol) traction control does not let that wheel spin a bit. so basically rain mode and normal abs mode and if they know how to ride a bicycle with a clutch off they go and they will be back with no worries because the bike handles itself. it is so tame compared to others in its class. but dont forget turn all that off and you have the beast back and its not afraid to murder you just for breathing on the throttle . its like a very mean dog thats nice to kids only way to explain it.

My riding history is as follows: Aprilia RS50, Yamaha TZR80, Kawasaki ZX400R and Kymco MovieXL125 as bikes that I could borrow from time to time. My first bike purchase was a CL Suzuki Vstrom 1000, so techincally I did start in a 1000cc bike. But then I was already 25 years old, and it still was a terrible idea. I did love the bike, but it was a terrible idea. Sold it because of work moves and what-not. Bought a 2009 FZ6 S2 in 2020, and now I have a 2009 R6r that I take to the twisties and the track. Now being a much much much better rider (taking advanced courses) I see that I should've started with something much smaller =)

Monkey, MT-09, ZX-10r and now an S1000rr. The jump from Monkey to MT was kind of stupid, but the liter bikes felt really solid after to torque monster MT. It's not just sport bikes. The same advice can be given for any of the other segments. I really wanted, and still do, an Africa Twin when I decided to buy a bike, but common sense placed a gentle hand on my shoulder and said "My dude, that's 1,100 cc's and very expensive. That's not wise." and convinced me to buy the beginner version, the CB500X. I'm sure if I had bought the bigger bike first I wouldn't have enjoyed my time so far nearly as much, and my next bike may be a completely different segment based on how I actually ride. Might get CB650R, or the new Hornet.

Yeah agreed, I got a Ninja 650 KRT with only ABS as the only electronic aid. Gotta say, it is a good transition from a 150cc bike. I've ridden it over a year, and still get a lot of kick and fun with the power and torque it has.
Best thing about it is I'm learning to handle situations like losing rear wheel traction, controlling the small wheelies when launching it to a sprint from a red signal, etc. And I also tour on it! 2-3 hours of continuous riding? It's plenty comfortable and it's got good power for the highway, so why not?

I started on an r3 as per yammies recommendation, i then got an r7 did 4 track days and got bored of it, i then purchased a 2012 rsv4 APRC model, and it is amazing. i have never found myself unable to control it and it is fantastic on track. i am not an advanced rider by any means with only 2 years of experience on motorcycles but if you respect the bike and use the throttle sparingly i find it quite manageble. though i am thinking of getting a brand new zx6 as i feel like with the tyle of riding i do (mountain twisties almost exclusively) that it would be more suited to my riding style. I love the aprilia though there is some part of its power that almsot leaves me with a hesitence when riding it, where if i feel if i went to a 600 i would be more condident with using what it is capable of. either way i have never found myself in danger riding the aprilia as long as your sensible and when you are going to give it the beans you are on an open road with no obstacles. It is fun in the mountains i feel that however i have to be super focused on my throttle control to make sure i dont highside. (probably an indication i need to be on a lower class bike hence why i am selling it)

A liter bike is ridiculously fast. Put it to you like this, at 7k rpm’s, your making the max horsepower of a 600 and you still have 5k more rpm’s to go (haven’t even touched the power band). On a liter bike, you don’t accelerate, you teleport….
