    Why?
    - They have a
    tough look;
    - Simple interior;
    - The design stayed the same for years;
    - Not too much electronics
    - Good payload and ground clearance;
    - In some countries is registered as a pick-up or van, with less taxes;
    - Big resale value.

    Purely of design is what makes them desirable now , in a sea of jelly mould compromised cars that are almost impossible to differentiate in terms of all the factors , performance , space , quality , efficiency etc , their all much of muchness , you could stick a skoda badge in a VW and barely noticed the difference . A defender can be nothing else but a defender , it does exactly what it was designed to do no frills , no trinkets and versatility nothing else can match , you could plough a field with it , tow 3 1/2 tons , climb a mountain , seat seven , wash the interior with a hose , carry 1000 kgs , bash the hell out of it and it keeps going with a few basic tools , the entire car can be disassembled with just spanners and a screw driver and a few Alan keys , wade through rivers up to the bonnet and attachments and conversations from everything from cherry pickers to lumber saws to tow truck , to ambulance to fire truck to army vehicle to farm tractor and more and still pick the kids up from school afterwards . There isn’t another vehicle outside of a unimog (which is painfully slow and huge ) that can do what a defender can do, it’s a unique icon of what can be done with just one vehicle when the base vehicle is designed entirely for purpose rather than kerb appeal. But the new 2020 one is an entirely different story , they screwed that up monumentally . There is only one defender the rest are just poor relations . Defenders will still be going and being rebuilt over and over until the combustion engine is no more and even then they have already started converting them to electric so likely if you got one it’s perfectly capable of being the first and last car you will ever need to own it will just live on forever .

    They are just a giant meccano set, great to work on if you handy with spanners ratchets and a welder. When you start buying the toys what this one has, and sorting out one that has not been well looked after, Then yeah it does get silly. If anyone is looking to buy one, have a figure that you want to spend, and have a look at a few in that price range, and pick the best one out. Also ones like this, i would go over it like a fine tooth comb, You do get some bad ones that have been tarted up just to sell for a profit. Also security is a major thing with these too. I had my 300 TDi stolen and destroyed last year, so make sure you have layers of security on it and where its parked! I own a TD5 county, that has all the interior in, which is a lot better for every day use. Compared to the 300 TDI i had. But bare this in mind, i do have a second car, which used for round the doors, some places where i live you just cannot leave a defender a lone for a few mins! I have had two chavs pull up to check if i was going to get out of my defender at the time, so they could sus it out. Great motors to own mind, if you love spanners etc! They are reliable if you buy a good one, my dads 200 has not let him down at all, My td5 is reliable too. The 300 TDI i had was also reliable, but sorting out other peoples half arsed handy work, and bodges is not fun at all! Which is expensive! You can be into 1000s before you make your own mark on it!

  • @alexpressley3465
    @alexpressley3465 Před 4 lety +2

    Everyone mocks the driving position of the defender but has anyone tried driving a pick up of any age in big boots or wellies? I find them terrible and often pressed two pedals simultaneously because they are far too close together.
    Plus being so close to the window is actually a benefit for off roading as you can physically peer down to see your wheel placement when tackling large obstacles.
    The original steering wheel is a little large but that is a left over from when the Series didn't have power assisted steering so the larger diameter helped for a larger ratio.
    My big favorite is the position of the light switch; right next to the ignition. Years before automatic headlights were a thing, no defender owner could rightfully leave their lights on and drain the battery.
    And you can literally clean the interior footwells and load bays with a hose pipe.

    Defender double-cabs are definitely cool but they're a bit silly really.
    The load bed is too small to be useful, there's no storage inside inside if you're carrying passengers and the interior is, erm, Defender.... which means it's one step up from a dumper truck.
    For a more affordable, more comfortable alternative, have a go in a well sorted Disco' 2.
    Only problem is, they don't have the Tonka toy looks.

    They are expensive because they’ve been made cool by the same people that made hipsters cool. I’ve got three defenders and I’ll admit as cars they are awful. They have no redeeming features as a nice mode of transport on British roads. They are slow, noisy, uncomfortable, don’t handle and have no safety features. They were meant to be tools, never a car to be a status symbol or an aspiration to own. Whether the queen is driving one or some chav with a bracelet on his ankle, it will never tell you anything about the driver.
    I love defenders but none of mine are posh, they are the honest workhorses they were designed to be and for that they are very good. Parts are cheap and they’ll survive a beating. But for the love of god do not buy one to get to work as everyday transport, unless you work on top of mountain, or across a field. If you want a status symbol 4x4 that costs a fortune, buy a Range Rover.

      They are fine for going to work every day, but better off getting a county though with the interior, or spend a few quid on sorting the interior out. I run a TD5 county and my dad runs a 200 TDI. But that boils down to personal presence. But you do have to be wary where you leave these parked up and have layers of security, where its parked and on the motor itself. Some parts near to me, you just cannot leave a defender. I have had two chavs pull up to check my defender out, they were waiting for me to get out. Lucky i had come back when i did.

    I used to own one. Worst vehicle I’ve ever had. Very unreliable and they get stolen on a regular basis.

    • @mykeh3155
      @mykeh3155 Před 4 lety

      Unreliability comes down to several different factors, what engine it has, how it's been treated, how you treat it, if you actually know how to deal with the issues they can have.
      They get stolen because it's extremely easy compared to other vehicles, all it takes are a few tools and you can pretty much take the whole car in pieces. But even then, it's not hard to fight back against them, there are some pretty good affordable options out there that literally make theft not worth the effort. Whenever we drive past other parked defenders, we aren't surprised to see 0 forms of security on them...
      But this is all the cost of owning one, you don't buy one for showing off or casual drives, you buy it if you will use it for what its made to do, be a workhorse.

      A standard defender 90 is one of the best off road vehicles ever made, matched by a select few (pinz, 101, g wagon), very easy to evidence this too. Nobody buys a defender because they are good on the road.

    They don't cost a fortune some very reasonable priced defenders out there, but then you get the defender millionaires who think they have something rare, you don't!! there's hundreds for sale at anyone time, most out there have been dicked about with, butchered and ragged within an inch of there lives, plus a defender is the most uncomfortable, unreliable box of scrap on 4 wheels and I say this as someone who's owned defenders.

      i wouldn't say they are unreliable box of scrap on 4 wheels. My dad owns a 200 TDI and that has not missed a beat at all, I have the TD5 and again that's never let me down at all. i did own a 300 TDI before the TD5, the 300 was stolen last year and destroyed. That one never let me down at all, only problem i had was sorting out other peoples half arsed handy work. Which is a bastard of anyone's time.

      Depends on the engine and other shit tbh. If you get a nice reliable engine and replace some of the dodgy parts that are known to fail, you get a car that lasts just as well as any other.
      The only trouble is there are so many different models (thanks to their highly customisable design) and different engines in use that finding the right one isnt always easy, or cheap.
