  • The Achilus Crusade has been raging for decades in the galactic east, a bloody and violent stalemate. While many Imperial forces have fought on this front, today I'll introduce you guys to five of the more obscure or interesting Space Marine chapters and show you how to paint them quickly.

    Hello friends! Due to this video I've had a friend start a Disciples of Caliban army. Due to postage errors on his decals, I decided to take a crack at making some STLs he could print. Four hours and ten tutorials later, they exist! And now I'm making them available to the public for free!
    Six standard variants and two Phobos variants are available for free on my Cults3d page (sorry, no Terminator pauldrons, couldn't find a good template). While I have not test printed them, they should theoretically work. Technically I was supposed to wait for my friend to test the print, but fuck it! Feel free to use them on your own Disciples of Caliban or use them for a custom army!

      This has me baffled too. Like if a chapter with a coke problem constantly denied it yet, their armor was white, their symbol was a mountain of snow and their name was the Line Snorters. But no, it's not them, it's the successor chapter called the Coke Addicts that's the problem. Seems legit

      @TheLichsLaboratory You absolutely did! I went with silver instead of gray, my bird brain just likes the shininess of it. Though I should do the highlights with drybrushing like you did, edge highlighting them when they're fully painted is a pain. That seems so much faster!

    I am LOVING this series. The mix of lore and really straightforward paint schemes is just brilliant and makes for a much more entertaining watch. It's really something that could be drawn out for many videos. I definitely agree about the need to paint straight lines for halved/quartered schemes. As someone painting an Angels Sanguine force who have a halved black and red scheme, a wonky or out of alignment line really sticks out. I do still find when painting squads of marines there's always going to be a few I've done where the helmet or chest isn't quite straight, and usually I've discovered that well after I've started doing washes and other finishing touches. I have found though that even in a worst case scenario, sponge chipping one of the chapter's primary colours and other weathering techniques can REALLY help with disguising those sorts of mistakes.

      Unless the Astartes Praeses becomes a topic for a video, I don't think I'd be painting Marines Errant any time soon. But I can give you this text guide on how I'd do it
      >start with a black primer and either brush on a bright silver or spray it on
      >paint the white half of the armor with a light grey
      >drybrush the light grey with a white
      >paint the things like gun casing and joints with a dark grey and the other metal bits with a silver
      >wash the whole mini with a black wash while wicking away pooling wash from the large surfaces
      >use a blue speedpaint or contrast paint diluted 1:1 with a glaze medium and glaze it over the silver panels to get a metallic blue (the brighter silver on the surface the better the effect is)
      >paint the eyes red and do the heraldry, either with freehand or apply a decal

    These DoC look a lot better than the recent short. Nice and dark! And clean, as always.
    And GW really needs to come out with new decal sheets whenever they make new successors! xD Some of these designs are almost insane to try and freehand! Almost makes me wish I'd decided on either just straight black or silver, instead of the black & green split. Consecrators would be easier emblem to freehand, and crossed swords already exists as decals. lol Thankfully, a lot of the old boys on BolterAndChainsword put together some decal sheets people could print out (if they could find any Testors decal paper..). ^_^ That's a really nice tut for the freehand!

    The Heavenfall blade of the Disciples of Caliban's first Grand Master is now wielded by the Grand Master of another Unforgiven chapter- the Consecrators. These guys don't seem to be listed on any collection of Chapters of the Achilus crusade, which is a pity, because their entire 3rd company is MIA in Jericho reach. I've just started an army of the Consecrators' 3rd Company, which is how I ended up watching this video (you don't get much more obscure than nobody knowing where you are- and I'm trying to work out if there's a canonical campaign badge for the Achilus crusade). Though I don't think there's any lore to support it, who's to say that one particular watch fortress of deathwatch can't consider the blackening of their armour to be a metaphorical change rather than a physical repainting. • @TheLichsLaboratory
      @TheLichsLaboratory  Před rokem +1

      Thank you! My only real suggestion would be to make sure your base coat silver and highlight silver are different enough in brightness to avoid looking too similar when you're done. Otherwise you'd lose your highlights and end up wasting a little time. Something a twinge darker like a gunmetal as a base, then a bright silver drybrush before a black wash for example. Just varies on the particular paints you use but if you can hit a recess color, base color, and a highlight, it'll look great

      @@TheLichsLaboratory Thanks for the reply, I think ill do lead belcher base then drybrush with runefang steel. I feel like a mid tone might cause too much of a mix. • @TheLichsLaboratory
      @TheLichsLaboratory  Před rokem +1

      @@nuz4209 Of course mate, I'm always happy to help. Leadbelcher base to Runefang drybrush would be exactly as described so that's perfect. Just tweak it a bit if it isn't quite what you wanted, and don't forget that washing the minis will alter the color slightly as well.
      As for the wet palette tech, when I load my brush, I always take some sort of test stroke. I used to do it on my hands or on the base of the mini but these days I find myself in the habit of doing it on the palette. It really helps me get a good grasp on paint consistency before putting it to an important bit. It's the same way Duncan Rhodes works with his brush if you watch him paint which makes sense since I watched a lot of his videos when I learned to paint.
      A wet palette is definitely worth using for any level of painter though. It really helps paint stay usable longer which leads to saving money in the long run and much less stress trying to paint before your paint dries up which is a godsend when you're working on intricate freehands. Plus half dried paint can get pretty chunky which can get up in your brush. I used a homemade one for years until it vanished so now I'm reluctantly using a proper one 😒
