  • The best healthy diet has been the holy grail of modern medicine. Despite 100s of studies and journals, there seems to be a lot of controversy as to which is the best diet for most of us to follow.
Before there was Paleo diet or keto diet, there was actually the Zone diet. I remember it. Dr. Barry Sears, a PhD biochemist, who for 25 years has been espousing that to stay healthy, a diet with the proper proportion of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates is the key to good health. Dr. Sears published The Zone Diet in 1995. He did have quite a lot of competition back then from some other famous doctors such as Dean Ornish who published his book, Reversing Heart Disease, which favored a low-fat vegetarian diet.
And in contrast to that, there was Dr. Robert Atkins who published the Atkins Revolution, which much of the public embraced as a high-fat diet, but no carbs. And in between all of that, most physicians were pretty supportive of the Mediterranean diet. And now finally what's recently hit the stage is the Paleo diet and the keto diet. And it really has us all scratching our heads. What should we eat? I don't know. People are asking this all the time.
My guest today, Dr. Barry Sears, has just released his newest book, The Resolution Zone, where he makes the case that how you can use your diet to resolve inflammation which as we all know is such an important thing. And we'll talk about also the blood markers and things that you can do to follow how you do on this diet. So, I'd like to welcome Dr. Barry Sears to the podcast.

I am heading back to the Zone diet, because I lost weight on it 15 years ago and have been gaining ever since I stopped.
I disagree that Dr sears wasn’t allowed enough time to talk. In fact, I am contributing to the comments because I thought the questions asked were perfect! You said a lot of things I was thinking myself!

Dr. Dean, When there are studies that have a high fat diet, there is no mention of the types of fat. Vegetable oils WOULD have caused high inflammation in a high fat diet, so when doing such a study, just changing the types of fat could change the outcome of the study. I maintain that using only "good" fats in a high fat diet will not cause inflammation. Does it even seem to make sense that all fats causes inflammation? (corn/soybean = olive???) BTW I loved the book "The zone diet" back in the 80's...That diet worked for really high energy.

Sadly the Dr. Barely had a chance to speak. Why have a guest with such a great experience, if the host will be the one speaking his mind all the time?

Dr. SEARS of you are Post Gastric By Pass patient and had your stomach removed and left with little bit of the stomach (Rement).
My problem is after I eat high carbs, I'm still hungry. Dose the brain tell the gut to stop eating? And were is the gut anyway???

He is not counting all the proteins in the 12 servings of vegetables he is recommending. And he leaves out the high endotoxins in animal products. He does NOT support occasional fasting. Aswell, all the Blue Zone centinarians eat beans which he says to avoid.

Aww this was so interesting until he said about cellulite being a marker of body fat percentage. I still had cellulite when I got to a dangerously low bodyweight of 85lb.

Years ago, I lost 20 lbs on his diet and felt stronger than ever .. unfortunately, shortly after doing the Zone , we opened a business which had us working 14 hours a day with no time to continue cooking healthy meals... my question to Dr. Sears is : does the green tea have to be a decaf? I remember that part of the diet was going decaf to control hormonal response...

The only thing I disagree with is his statement on lowery cholesterol by lowering insulin. My A1c is 5.4 and my triglycerides only 104 but my LDL is 214 due to a low carb approach for one year. I thought lowering cholesterol is through a saturated fat reduction?

Interesting but usually cholesterol goes up when u eat lots of animal food which has cholesterol. saturated fat like coconut oil fat or avocado fat and rest of the other seed fats r cholesterol free.. now some people have the ApoE4 gene that unfortunately, will raise your LDL which increases heart issue and Alzheimer's as you get older so they say.. but new evidence that not all LDL are bad that looks like there's different types of LDL oh my!! New evidence suggesting triglycerides may be the main culprit. Also cholesterol may not be a direct indicator of heart disease and total cholesterol - the accumulation of three types of fat in the blood - could be a useless metric. But they do say if your LDL is over 160 u may have a genetic factor but again there's drugs for that thk god

In reality, fornthose that care about such a thing, "high cholesterol" depends a lot on why its high. If it is high for the wrong reasons, fix the wrong reasons. If it isnhigh for the right reasons, leave it alone. Higher cholesterol correlates with longer life past 70 years old. Dr. Hal Huggins, DDS observed the patients he treated for mercury poisoning did the best when their cholesterol was about 220. My cholesterol is right about 220, and my TG/HDL is 0.8 or below. I'm not worried about cholesterol in the slightest!!! lol
I am worried about the acidity of my interstitial fluids (the "ocean" my cells and organs bathe in). Intest my sweat and my pH paper didn't budge off of its 4.5 minimum.
I had no idea dairy was the #1 acidic food -- and I lived off dairy for decades.
The hyperacidity appears to have damaged my acid excretion systems (kidneys), so I sauna daily, replenish with alkaline fluids, support my kidneys with herbs, and hope for the best.

I only cook with clarified butter and quality animal fats. Why ingest burnt toxic olive oil? How is that good for the body?
