- During Manuel Ponce's period of study in France under the guidance of Paul Dukas, Segovia began asking the composer for pastiches (a musical work that imitates the style of another composer, period, or composition). Segovia was attempting to establish a repertoire for the guitar comparable to that of other solo instruments, he wanted pieces that could fill-in the periods where the guitar repertoire was sparse. An example of these pastiches is the Sonata Classica - Homage to Fernando Sor - here Ponce was required to compose a work that could rival the Viennese piano sonatas of Joseph Hadyn. In Segovia's own words :
… since I have the good fortune of having a real Sor of greater talent than his predecessor writing a sonata for guitar, I do not want this sonata to be inferior to one of Haydn’s for piano.

Ponce’s compositions for guitar are really great. He could understand the language for this instrument very well.
Very true. Beside having truly his own unique voice and sound in his guitar compositions, he was also a master of writing in the style of other periods: but one thinks that, had it not been for the guitar, writing pieces this way for, say, the piano would not have ensured his ongoing legacy.
He wrote a piece here that is, arguably, far superior to anything Sor wrote: if Sor had written it, it would have been the masterpiece of the entire 19th century guitar repertoire (together with the Sonata Romantica...which is also superior, IMO, to anything written by any 19th-Century romantic guitarist-composer).

Much as this sonata is inspired by Sor's works, I do believe it is far better than anything written by Sor.
The Allegro sections seem perfect for a silent movie background, a Dudly Doright kind of movie.

It is a little work but you can just print the score. Use the Print Screen button [PrtSc]. You have to do this for each individual page. Download by push prtsc and then store it in a map and print it out.

articulation: The part just before the end of the sonata works better, sounds better ,with the seiquavers sluued ,instead of plucked ,just pluck the first note and hammer the next 3 notes ,as indicated. Jason ,please take note !
