Does Seattle's budget move signal a big change on regional homelessness response?

  • The city of Seattle is taking back money from the King County Regional Homelessness Authority, raising national questions about the future of the city’s support for the agency given the mayor’s public frustration over how it's working.
On Thursday, elected leaders were careful not to comment on the letter that started leaking out the day before.
As KOMO previously reported, Seattle has spent more than a $1 billion on homelessness, only as the number of unsheltered people grew.
Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, in multiple interviews since the start of this year, said he was taking a hard look at the funding of the organization and what it was doing with the money.

After spending a billion dollars the problem is 10x worse. That's the end results of continually doubling down on a ineffective solution of enabling the homeless while ignoring personal accountability.

Some people got rich off of this. Follow the money. Typical mindset, if it doesn't work then throw more money at it. the kickbacks as well must have been awesome.

If the KCRHA is incapable of providing evidence-based results from the $1b that Seattle taxpayers have provided over the course of a decade, they shouldn’t get any more money. A decade is long enough to show some results. And if you didn’t achieve the results you were hoping for, at least provide some basic accountability on how the money was spent.

@@shelley_northwest do you live in Seattle? It's not a bunch of disabled homeless people here. There are thousands of homeless doing drugs and nodding off in the middle of the street here daily. They choose to be homeless because it's how they're able to do drugs and live how they want to. There are SOME disabled homeless people here, and some of those do not do drugs, but a large majority of the problem is the fentanyl users. It is trashy, hence why people feel the way they do. If you don't live in Seattle and have not seen the problem, please don't speak on it. You just don't know.

Seattle spent over a billion dollars on homeless, and it is getting worse. Maybe trying a different approach would help. Doing the same thing and expecting a different result is just stupid.

There's a lot of money to be made in this industry. NGO's funneling through "non-profits" and "charities" all linked to one another. Administrative staff in these orgs making 6-figure salaries tells us what we need to know.

It’s important to remember that this has NOTHING to do with ‘homeless’. These people are drug addicts. They want nothing but to be as close to their drug supply as possible, and they want nothing but as much free money to spend on their drug habit.

Corporations and private "not-for-profits" will never fix society's major issues such as homelessness and mental/physical health. It is the responsibility of government to find ways to house it's people and to care for it's most needy when the so called "free market" fails. But America, being disproportionately led by conservatives, is failing miserably. So, enjoy the view. Your "conservative" vote put them there.
