@@Labyrinthwall You're welcome. It really is to easy to do. And like you say even if we have some privilege it doesn't mean we are without the hardships that weigh us down each day. My sister was in bits over the fact that we are here with a roof over our heads and food to eat and yet there are people in the world that don't have even that with current conflicts. I had to tell her that taking care of her health is still important. We live different lives and when she is well enough she can get involved in helping others but she needed to help herself first. What's that one saying? You can't pour from an empty cup. It's like when they say in emergencies with those air masks. You need to attach yours first before you help others into it. If you run out of air not only will you not be able to help someone else but you are also in danger then.
The "Dont spoil our tea" line is actually so powerful. Like if u take a look, u can often see ppl complaining about "seeing too much bad news". Like yeah, sorry, we are going to die more silently for u
My sister is that way. She is willfully ignorant and only believes what is convenient and spoon fed once to her. I try to correct her misinformation and she just says "I have a lot of stress in my life, you need to stop talking I don't want to hear it." And she just chooses to go back to believing what she wants with no media literacy or research on her part.
To be fair, some of us are extremely emotionally sensitive and actually can’t handle being fed negative news too much. I don’t agree with not being educated on world affairs, that’s not what I’m saying. But to a certain extent, we must do what we can and not focus on those things of which we cannot. You may argue we can, but the person is the only one who can determine if they financially, emotionally, or physically can. Like as much as I’d like to end world hunger, I’m such a small ant and pretty poor myself and just trying to survive myself. So much of us are on survival mode, it’s hard to leave room for other issues. While I’m aware, it just causes me even more distress to think about others suffering more than me (which I know literally millions are). The medical system is fucked, the housing crisis is causing FRIENDS of mine to become homeless, there are wars and genocides happening internationally, the climate crisis is only getting worse, and the list goes on and on. It’s too much. The average person is struggling to make ends meet as it is. You can only focus on what you can focus on. Try not to judge those who can’t deal with the emotional distress - they may have internal problems that take up more of their energy than you think. tl;dr the average person isn’t the reason for the suffering of others. It’s the uppers who we can’t do shit about anyways and leads to learned helplessness
I don't think it's inherently bad. Worrying about others when you can't take care of what's directly around you won't help anybody. If you're in a financial, mental and emotional state to help others though and you don't then that's different
@@hotwaterisspicyto be fair, unless she’s part of the cause for something evil, there’s nothing inherently wrong with being wrong. There’s a great short story called “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” by Ursela K LeGuin that reminds me of this sketch. The story is about the city of Omelas, where everything is perfect and everyone is happy and thriving, the weather is always beautiful, food and drink is always plentiful, no one has to work. The citizens are all intelligent, there’s no police, no soldiers, no kings or queens, no governing bodies of any kind. Everyone is full of bliss. Once each citizen reaches their late teens, they’re shown the truth of Omelas: underneath the city there is a dungeon and in that dungeon lies a child. The child is kept in perpetual filth, fed a small amount of garbage once a day, and is never allowed to see the sun. The blissful splendor and prosperity of Omelas relies entirely on the suffering and anguish of that one child. Once each citizen finds out the truth they have a choice, they can stay and partake in the splendor and joy of the city or they can leave Omelas. Most stay, choosing to ignore the truth, but some citizens, old and young, chose to leave. It’s a fantastic story and should be required reading in schools IMO.
I think this skit more so shows that even if it was as simple as opening a door, the people in the good side pf the door still wouldnt open it. And considering that our world is much more complicated, yeah, no "doors" are being opened any time soon.
Damn this skit is powerful. It makes me think about the way people ignore horrible things because “that’s just the way they are” and “life isn’t fair” and “it’s disturbing to talk about”, which is something that has always infuriated me. If it’s disturbing just to talk about it imagine how horrible it is to experience it. If life isn’t fair then why aren’t you trying to make it fair? If that’s the way things are then why won’t you try to make them better?
This hit me to my core because it's what it feels like growing up having been a victim of things grown-ups don't like to hear about, except the screaming door is inside of you.
yknow what i find interesting? at the end, the lady with the multicolored shirt says that the other woman is “spoiling” everyone’s tea - which is inherently bad, meaning she did technically cause something bad to happen, even if it’s small. it seems almost like bad things can happen in the land where nothing bad happens, but when those issues arise, they’re simply extinguished like a fire. it also explains the tense feeling of the skit - everyone is on edge making sure nothing bad has the chance to happen. i love these skits so much, they apply very well to the real world
Soon we may find ourselves on the other side of the door. While others continue to ignore it. That lucky few that get to stand on the ‘nothing bad happens side’ will continue to shrink. Thank you for posting this Stanzi! This was great!
I completely agree and I take it upon myself to be a Debbie Downer and bring up what's going on behind that door on a regular basis. Needless to say, I don't have a lot of friends.
Best sketch I've seen of yours, IMHO. Ursula LeGuin would be very proud! I love the unsettling colour scheme, the emotionless voices, the trippy environment and the extremely insightful theme. Brava.🖤🌹
The fact that they BOTH prove a point and hav valid arguments, even if one us correct and one isn't, really blows my mind. You set up skits with morals that seem really well thought of in a way that we know which one wants to do the right thing or wrong thing but they both have valid arguments and neither spoil the general moral
Ursula Le Guin's short story on Those Who Walked Away from Omelas touches on this and I love this skit so much - so chilling on how society pushes people to look the other way.
There's a take on that story in basically every Star Trek series made. The one in "Strange New Worlds" is the most overt and also the hardest to watch. It's called "Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach." It should be required viewing IMO.
Would be..or possibly is. What if heaven and hell are actually delineations of the evolution of different social and economic classes. Over many generations, it essentially creates 2 divergent realities. The people in hell are actually enslaved to those in heaven, and nearly every one is ignorant of the relationship
@@chrism8180 that's an interesting interpretation. @chrism8180 Yes! And there's been a good bit of religious commentary in entertainment media recently, which is typically how I get my spiritually philosophical fix. I don’t know when talking about injustice was worse than perpetrating it. But I’ve been told I ‘ruined the mood’ so many times in the last year it’s almost a sense of pride to manage to crack that facade of ignorance.
I've learned that if the point of bringing stuff up is about trying to mobilize interest, then at that point it's about trying to get people when they're at least not distracted. I can't say when the BEST time is to bring it up, but I do know that talking about child sex trafficking during a baby shower is maybe the WORST time. Joking aside tho, what I find frustrating is that when talking about fixing the world, I found that there are two camps: * those who reject that anything bad exists at all * those who accept that bad things exist, but what's happening over there isn't bad, in fact it's very good The former definitely comes off as "ignorance", but the latter comes off as "arrogance": "we're the good guys / we're on the right side of history / the future will vindicate us ... so everything we're doing is absolutely justified."
"Yeah there's millions of people in abject poverty, suffering in ways you can't comprehend, going through wars and horrors that you would never be able to withstand. But yeah, I'm the bad guy for temporarily harshing your vibe. k" - you, probably
Because 99.99% of people who talk about injustice don't actually lift a finger to do anything about it, bask in the same privilege as their peers, and think that simply talking about an issue somehow makes them morally superior. I can count on one hand the number of my "woke" contemporaries that have actually taken an active part in their local governance or city council, volunteered at shelters or outreach programs, done political canvassing, or even showed up to their primaries let alone help run them. At most they antagonize people on twitter whose views oppose them and circle jerk over how many retweets their cries of injustice got. It's like this skit, in the end there are only two options: you can open the door, or you can do nothing. Talking about the suffering of the other side is the same as doing nothing so, why ruin the mood? Either try to open the door, or enjoy the benefits you have. Nobody wants to hear you talk about opening it.
@@Kirivon I do agree. Virtue signalling is the worst- the people who will post an ai generated image of ‘all eyes on rafah’, or repost a rainbow, but won’t donate, or interact and boost actual marginalised voices, or do anything tangible. I do have a disabled perspective on this- I can’t do a lot of the in person activism, I can’t go to protests because many aren’t accessible, so my current strategy is annoying people who can, and dming my politicians until they block me.
All I can say that if anyone legitimately believes that this isn't about them in some way, then it's _ABSOLUTELY_ about them. Worse are the ones who acknowledge that bad stuff happen and they're trying to fix things instead of just ignoring it... however what _they_ do isn't bad, in fact it's _very_ justified. Sure it _looks_ bad, but you can trust them that they're doing what's best for everyone.

@@sashaashbythe dilemma is "do we help at the risk of millions dead and billions in destruction if it means finally putting a stop to this" or "do we do nothing and only hundreds die?" Neither is a viable option as both involve suffering, so then it's a debate over what's least worse between the two? Or maybe a third option: convincing both sides to definitively stop fighting by giving them billions in weapons? Sure it maintains the military-industrial complex, but at least people stop suffering... right?? Inb4 "we can just ask them to stop killing one another" Good luck with that, honestly. If asking people to stop killing one another was as easy as opening a door, people would've done that by now. That sounds awfully familiar...

It is very important. But also painful when no matter how much you help it makes no difference, may even get you killed in the process and set back things further. So I leave the door cracked if I'm the only one attempting to open it.
Compassion is better than empathy. Empathy can be painful and therefore make us look away or act from a hurt place ourselves which will not be helpful. With compassion you can help from a position that does not make the situation about how YOU feel about others suffering, but instead keeps the focus on the people who are suffering.

@@HelloMonsters. From Aesthetics Wiki: Weirdcore is a surrealist aesthetic centered around amateur or low-quality photography and/or visual images that have been constructed or edited to convey feelings of confusion, disorientation, dread, alienation, and nostalgia or anemoia. Visually, it is strongly influenced by the general look and feel of images shared on an older internet, roughly a period spanning from around the late 90's to mid 2000's. Amateur editing, primitive digital graphics, lo-fi photography and image compression are some of the most common elements found in Weirdcore images. Thematically, Weirdcore often conveys a feeling of dread, brought forth by its low quality imagery and a lack of context in regards to the location or the message being shown. This does not mean that Weirdcore is deeply rooted in horror, however, as the feeling of fear left on the viewer is merely a side effect of placing them in an unfamiliar setting or context. This is purely subjective however, and depends on the viewer, their own experiences and the content of an edit; while some people might find a Weirdcore image scary or ominous, others might feel nostalgia or even a feeling of comfort.
I read a short story about this dilemma- the ones who walk away from the Omelas, it’s about the morality of letting someone suffer for your good, really thought-provoking piece

You just hear the screams or the weird sounds, and you feel uneasy, but the perspective always focuses on the people trying to live a blissful life, indifferent to all the suffering. It was so bad that I left the theatre disgusted with myself.

@@searipple91 oh I agree the video is meant for others but those of us that care can sometimes make ourselves sick from worry. It's just a reminder for anyone needing one.
"but i'm not in the door" was probably my favourite part. too many selfish people, too focused on themselves
The "Dont spoil our tea" line is actually so powerful. Like if u take a look, u can often see ppl complaining about "seeing too much bad news". Like yeah, sorry, we are going to die more silently for u
Rio de Janeiro put up walls hiding the favelas for the 2016 Olympics.
If it makes your life easier and you’re already handling a lot of stress, why go out of your way to be correct just for the sake of it.

Ursula Le Guin's short story on Those Who Walked Away from Omelas touches on this and I love this skit so much - so chilling on how society pushes people to look the other way.

Stanzi single-handedly showing how heaven/hell would be a dystopia
Would be..or possibly is. What if heaven and hell are actually delineations of the evolution of different social and economic classes. Over many generations, it essentially creates 2 divergent realities. The people in hell are actually enslaved to those in heaven, and nearly every one is ignorant of the relationship
@@chrism8180 that's an interesting interpretation. @@ceilingfan1813 yea I agree with your notions about religion. For the most part it's a tool of manipulation. But it's a fun thought, if not taken too seriously
@chrism8180 Yes! And there's been a good bit of religious commentary in entertainment media recently, which is typically how I get my spiritually philosophical fix. i love how it's a loop. shows how every time the person who wants to help the others suffering will be shut down, nothing changes
The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas is getting one hell of a modern twist, I love this
I don’t know when talking about injustice was worse than perpetrating it. But I’ve been told I ‘ruined the mood’ so many times in the last year it’s almost a sense of pride to manage to crack that facade of ignorance.
Well done!
I've learned that if the point of bringing stuff up is about trying to mobilize interest, then at that point it's about trying to get people when they're at least not distracted. I can't say when the BEST time is to bring it up, but I do know that talking about child sex trafficking during a baby shower is maybe the WORST time.
Joking aside tho, what I find frustrating is that when talking about fixing the world, I found that there are two camps:
* those who reject that anything bad exists at all
* those who accept that bad things exist, but what's happening over there isn't bad, in fact it's very good
The former definitely comes off as "ignorance", but the latter comes off as "arrogance": "we're the good guys / we're on the right side of history / the future will vindicate us ... so everything we're doing is absolutely justified."
Drives me mad. People who in person are happy to talk about how much they care, but won’t actually do so around people who matter.
I do have a disabled perspective on this- I can’t do a lot of the in person activism, I can’t go to protests because many aren’t accessible, so my current strategy is annoying people who can, and dming my politicians until they block me.
This is brilliant. I love the commentary, Stanzi.

Weirdcore Stanzi slaps truth, man. Love it.
Hi; what is weirdcore? Just asking because I see multiple comments mentioning it lol.
@@HelloMonsters. From Aesthetics Wiki:
Weirdcore is a surrealist aesthetic centered around amateur or low-quality photography and/or visual images that have been constructed or edited to convey feelings of confusion, disorientation, dread, alienation, and nostalgia or anemoia.
