Hannah’s Poem and Power Reversals • Firstborn Ep. 6

  • Hannah was an oppressed woman, scorned by her husband’s rival wife because of her barrenness. But the way she prayed and trusted Yahweh through this hardship became a remarkable example of how God works through the lowly to subvert human notions of power and status. In this episode, join Tim and Jon as they trace the theme of the firstborn in the scroll of Samuel.

Really insightful! Your conversation reminded me of how I got my son’s name. It’s Reuben Samuel. Reuben was the firstborn son of Jacob means “behold a son” , Samuel as you guys discussed was Hannah’s son she prayed for, meaning “asked of God”. I didn’t have a rival, but hadn’t been able to conceive so I prayed and cried out to God. God finally opened my womb. My husband and I had been married 7 years when our son was born in answer to my prayers. That’s why I named him Reuben Samuel, “behold a son, asked of God.”

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
Although Hannah’s name means “favor,” she appeared to be less favored by God than her counterpart. Penninah had multiple children, and Hannah was barren. They aren’t siblings, but the two wives are set up as rivals in the pattern we’ve seen through multiple iterations of sibling rivalry.
Hannah’s prayer links her to both Sarah and Abraham. She is like Sarah in her prolonged barrenness, and she is like Abraham who had to give up his son Isaac. However, the narrator is calling attention to a big difference here-Yahweh had to demand Abraham’s son Isaac, but Hannah willingly offers her son to Yahweh.
Hannah’s poem is a prophetic foretelling of God’s future deliverance of humanity from sin and death. The poem is full of examples of how Yahweh maintains order in the cosmos by upsetting human ideas of order and reversing human power structures.

20:00 I have a different perspective on what Hannah's husband is really saying here. I've been through infertility. My husband felt hopeless throughout the whole thing. He did everything he could to help me get better and to stop crying. He read Hannah's husband as someone who is trying everything in his power to help her. He wants her to get pregnant. He wants her to stop being sad. I think what he was trying to say is "Please let my love be enough. Let my love be enough for you."
It is a terrible feeling not to be able to help when your loved one is hurting.

Hagar mocked Sarah the same way Coral did and for the same reason, that they had gotten pregnant by the same husband, and the other was barren. I feel their heaviness was more that, because at least they both had the love of the husband, not like poor Leah!

God doesn't set anyone up to fail. Please revisit that comment. God allows things or open the door for stuff to happen in our lives because He already knows what our response will be. He draws nearer to us to offer help when we ask. Sometimes we're so enveloped in ourselves we refuse to ask for help. In many instances God puts us in a situation where in we need to or must ask for help to let us understand that we are not independent of others. neither should we operate in a vacuum- as some like to behave.

1 Chronicles 6 Samuel is a Levite, "Ephrathiate" refers to the family location in 1 Samuel 1. A depth of God's grace is revealed in this truth. Samuel descends from a remnant of those who were involved in but were spared / survived Korah's rebellion.
Now thru Samuel, his descends end up serving in King Davids court as Psalmist

So interesting that my immediate family has so many parallels to the Bible. I am the 4th of my family and my testimony is one of curses and blessings. The first born of my immediate family turned out to be very evil. He stole all the money from my parents that have passed on. Money was his downfall and his god.
My testimony is on CZcams called rapture apocalypse testimony 2018. If someone wrote my complete story, it would sell millions because God was with me always and I believe it was because I am the 4th born.

, yes in numerous situations God elevates the lowly but that is what, you should focus on the why. Why was cain rejected, he brought crop sacrifice for his sanctification, ishmael was the firstborn of the bondswoman, esau hated his birthright and man was made in the image of christ as colossians calls him the first born of all creation. So the theme is God has kept double portion according to the right of the firstborn in deut. But it is not a seal deal, if you dont do what is needed to be done, God will take that right and give the next person

Although is hard and painful when we feel our parents have hurt us it is necessary to forgive and ask God to clean us up of any wanted and residual hatred (i wont assume you hate your mother from your post but if you say she resented you is safe to say that there are other residual damage from that within you, please dont understand that im judging you since i had a similar experience with my own mother). Regardless God chose for us our parents and He also made them as they are, sometimes what we feel as animosity towards us is trully a hurt or pain that they have/had in their hearts that not only hurts them but everyone around. Are we going to perpetrate and preserve the same hurt or are we going to choose to heal?
Since we are made out of the cloth of our parents, when we harbor ill feelings or resentment towards them, in a way, in many ways, we are holding that resentment toward ourselves (since they are part of us) and we can easily pass that resentment to our children as well. Lets pray that God may heal our heart and our parents hearts and bring peace to our lives. Lets ask forgiveness for our bitterness and commit to love one another as Jesus loves us. Wouldnt that be beautiful, to start healing from the inside?
God bless you and all your family, in Jesus name, amen! God bless you sister!
