  • Warsaw History | Warsaw Uprising | W Hours | We Witnessed a Big Day in Warsaw | Poland 2020
On August 1, 1944, at 5:00 pm (the “W” Hour) The Warsaw Uprising started. Hundreds of people went out to the street to fight against the Nazis. The Uprising began in the capital with simultaneous coordinated attacks, and the idea was that this movement would last a few days until Soviet forces arrived and they could help Poland. However, this didn’t happened, and the Polish people had to fight almost without any outside assistance.
Many of those coordinated attacks lasted just few days, and the Uprising started moving to the west districts of Warsaw. Some areas fought for around 60 days.
A lot of Polish people, including kids and women, died in this uprising while trying to defend their country. The losses on the Polish side were approximately: 18,000 soldiers dead, 25,000 wounded and over 250,000 civilians killed. On the German side the number of victims were: 17,000 soldiers killed and 9,000 wounded.
On October 2nd, sixty three days after the Warsaw Uprising started, the General Tadeusz Bór-Komorowski signed the capitulation of remaining Polish forces in Warsaw. This capitulation treaty stated that the Polish soldiers were to be treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention, and the rest of the civilian population was to be treated humanely.
The Warsaw Uprising is still considered by the Polish people as the greatest and biggest rebellion against the Nazis.
very year in Warsaw, on the 1st of August, at exactly 5pm an amazing moment happens in this city.
Warsaw is ready to remember those heroes that gave their life for Poland, and an alarm interrupts the activities in the city, and all the people in Warsaw (but really, ALL the people) stop for 1 minute.

😊Not only all of Warsaw, but all Poles and the entire Polish.Alarms sound all over Poland, and wherever they are and can, Poles stop for a minute of silence. When the Warsaw Uprising lasted, all Poles were with Warsaw and its fighting inhabitants with their hearts and minds. And so it is today on each anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising.Even when abroad you can often see how many Poles stop for this minute of silence. We always remember that day.You have to see it yourself to understand.😊

And you know that Poland and India share a common history. Poles remember Maharaja Jam Saheb Digvijay Sinhji, heir of the Navanagar principality in western India. It was the beginning of 1942. The Polish government-in-exile had already signed the so-called Sikorski-Majski Agreement and took further steps to get its citizens out of the depths of the Soviet Union. Since it was impossible to bring exhausted women and children to a country where there was a war, the government looked for countries that would host our citizens during the war. India was one of the first to come forward. It was here that for the next six years, from 1942 to 1948, about 2.5 thousand. children and 3.5 thousand adult Poles after the trauma of Siberia could use a safe shelter, despite cultural and religious differences. Near his property in Balachadi, he ordered the construction of several dozen new buildings and a mast with a Polish flag. He also persuaded other Maharajas to follow his example and also accept Polish orphans. They were free to use the Maharaja's pools, gardens, tennis courts, and other parts of the space. They attended lessons and did not lose touch with the Polish language and culture thanks to the efforts of the owner of their new home. In the area of the summer resort, a large Polish flag was hung, the pupils were also taught the texts of traditional Polish songs. He gave them a piece of paradise after the nightmare of war and Siberia. And the Poles remember

I am hoping to be in Warsaw next year on August 1. Haven’t been there since 1998.
I am not sure I like this big organized event thought. I remember back in the days it was more spontaneous. At 5 o’clock people would hear the sirens while they were doing everyday activities: trying to catch bus, shopping, walking etc. Everyone would just stop and stood up in the silence. Cars and public transportation would stop too. No flairs, or noisy motorcycles or screams. Just sirens and silence. Many may disagree with me but I think that it was more powerful. Short, spontaneous moment of silence. Very moving and powerful moment. I feel right now this is being lost in the noise.

Namaskaram, Sayali-ji. Im amazed by how nice and accurate u've done a video about our very important day of our history. Im amazed even more by knowing that u participated in this festival of patriotism by ur own and that u feel it as well together wth us. That this is not some strange n obsolete crazy, but something u know is good. From myself i can tell u that in Uprising's Museum, u've mentioned about is a piece of army uniform belonged to my granny's cousin bro (bhai), presented in a cabinet, my dear. His name was Jerzy Gawin, conspiracy's nick name ,,Słoń'', which means ,,Elephant'' - something related to India as well ;)) This man is in every encyclopedy, has his own important plc in our war history. He also has his own monument in Warsaw. I know it's probably impossible, but id love to show u that and tell u much more about our history, so u'd realize that Poland n India share much, much more than u myb expected. All the best n Gods bless u
