Great interview I always thought that comeback was one of the most inspiring ever, the wheels could and should of fallen off manytimes. To be in that position 8 - 1 down and make all the right decisions to turn the team around is incredible. It shows what good leadership is. I think the mistake Ben's making in this and the previous cup is being team principle and also helmsman. I think he needs to run the show and designate driving duties to others.
The subject of that conversation between Larry Elison and Russell Coutts would have been interesting, perhaps pivotal. Why the tension? The owner of one of the biggest software companies in the world and the other a formidable yachtsman who clearly understood the competition rules. The question being, what do you do with a machine that was only able to foil when everything else was just right, but too unstable to win the event (races) against a foe that clearly was more stable and mostly foiling?. Why not consider introducing an Expert System (AI) to make the foil arm decisions for you? A software solution? Either acting directly on the foil arm hardware (not so easy given the time), or just giving the humans a line/dot to follow so they can do it manually (like a robot). Or was that not allowed under the rules if that’s what happened?
