My favorite tennis player as a kid, I remember watching this match and cheering when the last point ended. Funny thing is when I watch it now, I cry lol. Andre really deserved this win in 92. He had paid his dues, and having lost his previous 3 grand slam finals as the favorite, he really needed this win. This era at Wimbledon was truly still the serve and volley era. It wasnt easy for a baseliner to win Wimbledon back then. There were no poly strings where you could pass at will and dip balls at a guys feet when he was at the net so easily, and the grass was cut shorter so the speed of the court favored a net rusher as well. Yet he won. I admired Agassi because he really had to earn his service games here, whereas others would just hit 4 unreturnable serves and hold. Andre had some of the most beautiful groundstrokes of all time. I still think hes the best return of serve ever, and feel he has the best two hander ever as well. Its simply awesome to see the guy return 130 mph bombs at the guys feet over and over again, and pass dudes with the smallest targets available. He even made a mullet look good....
to be fair, very most of the server and volley players back then were not great playing at the baseline. Agassi was the best at returning service in his era, but players nowadys would toy with these net rushers so easily.

Me. I was born in 2000 and I find these old matches more incredible than some of today's. Opposite playstyle on fast courts is always the best match- ups. This is how tennis needs to be played.

Something like 7-8 or 8-9, might’ve been right after that 1st match pt Rafter took it back to deuce w/a lob it was like I could be doubt sinking in. Always wondered if Goran was thinking the same thing at that pt. Like fate wasn’t going to let it happen for him. Luckily he had more resolve than me lol

I would argue Goran vs. Rafter in 2001 was the loudest. That was the best atmosphere ever at Wimbledon. I almost wish they'd do a Monday final again for that reason.
I luv Andre and like most everyone else was rooting for him every time he was on. But it was really Gorans game to lose in that last set, and his unforced error/double faults did him in. Andre doesn’t win that day w/o Gorans mental lapse serving. Again I luvd the outcome & 100% pulling for Agassi, but I’ve come to love both guys.

I remember seeing this match live. I remember I counted 40 aces and 40 service winners by Ivanisevic. That means Ivanisevic won no less than 80 points on a first serve! And he still lost the match...
Others have won there with great returns.. Connors.. Becker, too, although he was a great serve and volley player, but he had a great return of service..

When I read Open the surprising aspect of this match was that Agassi expected to lose. Agassi had more fear of “big” servers - Ivanisevic, Stich, Krajicek, even Max Mirnyi - than I would have expected from some who returned so well.
don't remember if Agassi mentioned his GF at the time of this Wimbledon in his book. I think it was Arthur Ashe who said Agassi would be the last man under 6 foot tall to win Wimbledon, which has been the case except when Hewitt won. but the courts are much slower nowadays
I loved John's run to the semi's at Wimbledon. We got the usual tantrums and whatever ever.... In truth by this time the crowd got accustomed to it and wasn't even booing, even the umpire didn't do much. It was clear that he was playing up to the crowd and they were liking it and he knew it
I am looking at these road to the final draws and this boggles my mind! Ivanisevic had to go through 3 different grand slam winning legends, who according to all lists possible belong in the top-10 of an open era! Agassi had to go through another 2 all-time top-10 of an open era tennis greats as well! And Ivanisevic yet even after all those opponents had to play another ATG in the final! Lol These days if you are one of the big-3 you would be lucky to face top-10 ranked player before reaching finals! Lol But even if you do it will probably be a mug or a choker or a useless social media era next gen, who fail to show any signs of improvement on grand slam tournaments over and over again...this begs the question if Big-3 had draws like these in all of the grand slam tournaments they have won would they still win AS many?? Doubtful tbh...no disrespect, but the current era of tennis seem too inflated to me, compared to 80’s or early 90’s!
And this was also during the time when there were just 16 seeds at slams. So a top player could get an unseeded top 20 ranked player in the early rounds. These days, with 32 seeds, the top guys can be assured they won't face a top 20 player until at least the fourth round.
I agree indeed, I was pointing out similar theory when I claimed Pete is actual GOAT considering the competition, conditions and technology from that time! It was way more difficult to excel!
Ivanisevic was an under rated baseliner. He along with Sampras and agassi were widely considered as part of the next "big 3" of the 90s so to speak not just in potential but they were all excellent baseline players and preferred rallying to serve volleying. Of course that is if he didn't ace the opponent outright. His passing shots and groundies were deadly off both wings when his game was on. Oddly, he played really well on indoor carpet and hard as well as grass and red clay but not so well on outdoor hard except rarely. In a sense they were transitional to the predominantly baseline play of the 2000s and after (serve + groundstrokes) as opposed to pure serve volley. Ivanisevic was like Becker in some respect game wise
The big three don’t have to play any former great champions because those three players wiped out all the other competition for 20 years. They didn’t give anyone else a chance to be a champ minus a few people
Very close first set by the way: almost every game went do "deuce" and there were quite a lot of break points, but nobody was able to convert any. Then there was a long Tiebreak, too (10:8). But still the set took "only" 50 minutes, because both Agassi and Ivanisevic were known to play extremely fast between points, especially Ivanisevic.
Its grass.. Fast grass.. Even with so many deuce games and tiebreak.. 50.minites is not 'only' But ok.. This fast grass was a slow one in the finals.. Still 50 mins is a lot

Had players like Nadal, Djokovic, Becker, Cash, McEnroe or Lendl played that many points in one set - even on FAST grass, the set would probably have taken 1 hour and 10 minutes or so. Because those players take or took a lot of time between points.
These two should have been the two Wimbledon finalists 9 years later in 2001. It was some a-hole linesperson with a rotten line call in Agassi's semi-final versus Rafter in 2001 which cost Agassi a 2001 Wimbledon final. Otherwise it would have been the same 2 finalists 9 years apart which would have been something for the books. One of the prime reasons why the drips brought in ' hawk eye ' or whatever its called. But too late to correct the abberation.
Think the Aussies in crowd for the 2001 final made it very special though, not sure if same atmosphere would be present with Agassi in the final...then again obviously would have loved to see it. However, we can only see one of them and I think we got the right final, plus of course Goran won so we definitely got the right winner. Hard to imagine any final beating that.
What I love Andre the most is his temper during the game! He is very calm and professional unlikely others who make ugly scenes!😂I can tell Andre played with all his heart and desire to win! For Physical endurance maybe Andre beat his opponent!

well said. bud collins was a tennis trivia idiot who loved making up infantile phrases & nicknames and bud collins was a buffoon who knew nothing @ tennis and managed to never make ONE comment of interest about the sport.
And unfortunately for Goran, he came up against Sampras in 1994 and 1998. If it hadn't of been for Federer fluking that win against Sampras in 2001, it likely would have been another Sampras v Ivanisevic battle in semi-final. *I hate it when a player takes out the champ, only to lose in the next round. Much like Philippoussis at the 1996 Aus Open when he beat Sampras but then lost to Woodforde in the next round (Woodforde, really?). And who did Federer lose to in the next round? Tim Henman. A player Sampras would have annihilated as he'd done numerous times in the past at Wimbledon. They say this was the changing of the guard, but not so in my opinion. The 1990 US Open was a good example of 'the changing of the guard'. They thought Sampras had gotten lucky against Lendl, but then he went on to defeat McEnroe, and then he beat the 'next generation' talent of Andre Agassi. He went all the way, unlike Federer.
Sampras losing to Goran was the key. If not for Sampras, I think Agassi would be considered one of the best of all time. Sampras just had his number, and beat him in so many finals. Also, of course, Andre should have won one of those FO he lost in the final.

He hits the ball on the way up just before it stops. He doesn't wait for it to stop or go down. Being six foot four also helps a lot

You can see that they are still using most of the court, instead of today, when almost only the back-court is used.

*I hate it when a player takes out the champ, only to lose in the next round. Much like Philippoussis at the 1996 Aus Open when he beat Sampras but then lost to Woodforde in the next round (Woodforde, really?).
And who did Federer lose to in the next round? Tim Henman. A player Sampras would have annihilated as he'd done numerous times in the past at Wimbledon. They say this was the changing of the guard, but not so in my opinion. The 1990 US Open was a good example of 'the changing of the guard'. They thought Sampras had gotten lucky against Lendl, but then he went on to defeat McEnroe, and then he beat the 'next generation' talent of Andre Agassi. He went all the way, unlike Federer.
Ivanisevic's Achilles heel was that he couldn't hit a well-placed top spin backhand to save his life.

Sampras losing to Goran was the key. If not for Sampras, I think Agassi would be considered one of the best of all time. Sampras just had his number, and beat him in so many finals. Also, of course, Andre should have won one of those FO he lost in the final.
