Chelsea Preps for IFR | Actual IMC Across Florida

  • I've flown this route from X04 to KPNS many times, mostly solo, but there's something new every time. Near the end, we were pressed to make a decision as to whether we wanted the visual approach or the ILS, which would require holding for traffic. There's no better training than real-world application to decision-making and procedures!

Honestly been watching your channel for years. This segment was one of the best IFR educational references Ive seen for the general youtube community. Access to such great information like this from someone like yourself wouldve saved me a lot of stress when I first went through IFR training in the 70's. I am using yours and a few others GA channels currently to motivate young people into a career in GA/Aviation in general. There are great opportunities for them right now that weren't available to generations before without spending lots and lots of money. It's amazing how little exposure the younger generations have to GA beyond FS's. I truly believe that GA is on the cusp of something similar to the 50's and 60's and young people will gravitate to it when they can really see it, feel it, touch it and experience it. They are the future of GA and we need to make it as accessible as possible to them so they can enjoy the wonder of flight safely. Cudos to you and the other channels that are promoting GA in a positive, safe and exciting way, truly a blessing for the skies.

Okay this video is so amazingly helpful for me!
I'm a dispatcher so IFR is my jam and my airline regularly operates in and out of PNS.
But there's still that gap between my theoretical knowledge as a dispatcher and all of these microsteps!
Even when I'm in the jumpseat, all of these things you're explaining so well in detail go by in a silent blur to a non pilot like myself.
    Thanks for the video!
    Keep it up!!!

Like Buttah. And don'tcha love it when you get to a decision point - be it "choose the approach" or DH - and lo, there's the airport...
Definitely like high at night, especially when the chart shows obstacles in the vicinity of the runway... although it does take a little doing to get the 'Hawk to behave with extra energy. Clearly Chelsea has this nailed, though...

Really great instruction. I’ve completed my IFR training and now scheduling checkride, but still need to polish approaches. Disappointing that actual steps in approach are nowhere in IFR Handbook or IFR Procedures Handbook. My CFII makes me write out ”recipe “ for each approach step so I don’t miss anything, such as GPS to VLOC. Flying a Cardinal 177 w/ 2 G5’s, Avidyne 540 (& a PowerFlow!). Chelsea has done great! Congratulations! There’s quite a lot in IFR flying and so easy to get fixed on one item and blow through heading or altitude.

A displaced threshold or DTHR is a runway threshold located at a point other than the physical beginning or end of the runway. The portion of the runway behind a displaced threshold may be used for takeoff in either direction and landings from the opposite direction.

Just last month, I finally did my IPC after many years of VFR only flying in Arizona. It feels good, but I still need a lot of practice! Current, but not especially proficient. It's been a long time! ATC can make it difficult to practice what needs to be practiced sometimes. With dozens of flight schools in the Phoenix/Tucson corridor, ATC is always very busy...
