Versatile. Aggressive. Perplexing. Matt Shadows’ voice can be described many ways! Watch and listen closely with me as I pick apart the techniques needed to create distortion like he does - without killing your voice. You can create constant grit and aggression AND be pain free! Matt Shadows shows us how (if we know how to look and listen)
Dude you fucking nail the revs parts. Sounds just like him sometimes.
i was thinking the exact same thing this dude sounds exactly like the rev wtf i closed my eyes and it sounds almost identical
Agree
the hell yes! totally nailed. awesome
Holy shit, that was creepy
I know it's kinda off topic but does anyone know a good site to stream newly released tv shows online ?
The 12:40 part was performed by the rev.
He used to do that while playing the drums.
The guy was from another planet and one of his kind.
Rest in peace knife master.
Teppa Inc. hahaha “I’m gonna go into the woods, and I’m never gonna come back - and when I come back, I’m gonna be the knife master”
“Come back fuckin’ stallion duck”
last one is also the rev. what a dude
@@seanmitchell9310 that's the biggest duck I've seen in my life!!!! Hahahaha
@@uma7d of course!! I rushed to the comments without getting to that part hahaha
The lbc live version of that part is one of the best things that happened to music ever, to me.
Didn’t he also do the “ripped her heart out, right before her eyes” part?
If you wanna see ''How to Sing Like The Rev'' like this comment to Chris Liepe could see that
I think this video says how the rev sings too it's just the same technique that shadows uses it's just that the rev has a different voice register than shadows. I think the rev is a tenor while shad is a baritone I can be wrong tho.
@@anassbouhrachi577 i've hear in somewhere than rev's voice is soprano... but i can be wrong as well :v
@@REJEITEAMORDERNIDADEBR I guess it's not mentioned anywhere what voice type he had but we all agree he had a crazy voice with a crazt range and he used to distort some really high notes even for M.shadows man... What a legend !
I've noticed that the scream he explains on Afterlife, is The Rev's sound, actually The Rev had a Tenor voice, then he sings the higher notes and M. S. The lower
4:33 Rick
15:25 Morty
@Federico Rumbolá I agree, not ideal
hahahah LOL true!
Morty were in Avenged Sevenfold now Morty oh jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez Riiiiiiiiick whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa *guitar solo
That’s actually fucking funny
I got Seth Rogen lmfao
15:11
Me watching video.
People walk in.
"Wait..n-n-no..I can explain."
hi
This just makes me realize what an amazing vocalist Matt is
Hes okay
For a spot in the top ten vocalists
29:09 Jesus that was like nearly spot on to the Revs part . That was kind of scary lol. Almost like he just rose from the dead out of nowhere .
yay :)
28:20 was the late Jimmy Sullivan, The Rev my guy
hello
ah i think that that high bit in the back round of the bridge is actually the Rev (Rip) who also had a very strange approach to singing
The Rev had such a unique sound and I miss it 😢
Indeed it's Rev on the second sentences of the back voice, and not only on Afterlife but also in other songs from them. The Rev was such a mastermind in the group R.I.P.
@@claudioalvarosa9434 yeah man, his bit in critical acclaim has to be one of my favourites
@@isaiahpeterson6134 i know man, what a talent, i thought people were lying to wind me up when they told me he'd passed :(
The best way i could describe his voice is Gilbert Godfrey doing an impression of a female opera singer , which sounds funny but i fucking loved it
I personally think that m shadows can hit that note, although with the rev in it, it definitely adds to the dynamics of the song.
I love how he focuses on Jimmy’s voice too during the afterlife section... I really wish there was more recordings of Jimmy singing so we could have a full episode. Dude had such an interesting voice. R.I.P
agreed
Chris Liepe can you please do either Matt Bellamy or Spencer Sotello of Periphery next?
Agreed Sean Mitchell. Could always check out Pinkly Smooth - Jimmy and Syn's childhood band.
If you want to hear the rev singing solo check out pinkly smooth, specifically the mezmar album. It’s jimmy’s side project with syn from years ago.
chillsdesign is there any other album by them?
Please do a how to sing like The Rev!!!
I agree
Agree🔥🔥
Tq
Yes !
I've always wanted that.. Please do it
What I really like about you is that you're not afraid to sound shitty - to break up, crack, etc. to show your viewers who are not quite on your level how to get to certain placements and sounds. Great content my dude
Awesome! Yes! Thanks man. :)
16:10 Sick...
Even sounds like The Rev
@@viniciusribeiro7279 yeah that's the actual reason I made the comment. The technique is to the point.
We need 21 sec scream
Oh can't wait for the James Hetfield one!!! Thanks man you're the best
Yep, can't wait!
YEEYEAAAH!

LOL honestly though, this is a great video! His technique is a difficult one to explain and you did a great job executing it!
Darkercrib Official essentially what all of metal singing is.
@@gageclark2390 Ahaha, That ain't fair 😂
Sounds like Link from Zelda when he’s falling
Actually, more like the sound I make when I have a bad dream LOL
Dragon Ball Z
“Ripped her heart out right before her eyes, eyes over easy, eat it eat it eat it!” Lol. Got to love The Rev! Rip
10:05 Wow! That sounded just like the revs scream!
hello
9:17 Serj Tankian lmao
I'm weaaak
I’m crying😂
HAHAHAHAHA
Lmao ahahahaha
LMAOOOOO
Something wrong with this channel. Everytime I want to know a specific thing about singing, you just upload videos about them over and over. Otherwise you' re a perfect teacher. How can you do it ?!?
Haha! Good luck I guess??
I’ll go into the woods forever and never come back BUT WHEN I DO COME BACK
@@allen5700 im going to be the KNIFE MASTER
My favorite metal singer of all time - been so excited for you to explain how he sings so incredibly. The hype is real!!!

Dude you're an incredibly knowledgeable and talented bloke. You explained everything in a way that was really easy to follow and do with you, plus your voice and technique is fantastic. The breaking at 16:15 sounded top notch. Brilliant stuff.
Right on! Thanks so much! Here’s another video I did on some of the distortion and grit stuff: czcams.com/video/uhaoJcQozEU/video.html
Been listening to A7x for roughly 11 years now, it's insane how much his voice has improved over the years, also their coordination as a band, Love ’em to death
I've been thinking that in recent years with David Draiman as well
I really love how authentic you are. Experimentation is super super important when it comes to discovering new sounds are you're not ashamed to make weird ass sounds when demonstrating how to get there. For every distortion singing technique, you are by far the best on CZcams at describing them.
this was the most anticipated video on how to sing like artist X for me
M Shadows is probably the best example of how improper technique can seriously mess you up, but also how it's easy to recover from damage with proper technique imho
Im sure it wasn't the technique itself, but the overuse of it. A7X started touring too much, it has happened to every single singer when they start singing so demanding songs almost every night
@@xGuitarInFlamesx yep, they toured almost no stop from 2016 to 2018
@@xGuitarInFlamesx yeah that's their most recent problem, in albums before city of evil it's quite obvious that he's screaming until his voice completely breaks though, no technique just all throat
that's what i meant, he lost like 5 whole notes in 2004 before he developed a more reliable hyper-compressed way of sounding like that, still very strenous and he almost messed up his voice after non stop touring for 2 years
Tomas Garces Chaparro i agree as songs like second heartbeat which is almost all screaming are taxing as even when I try to sing it myself whilst using the proper technique it still hurts a decent amount
he got an infection on his vocal chords.
You're bang on with the Hetfield comparison.
Shadows of war😁😁😁
4:33 you sound like Rick from Rick and Morty lol. Wab bu la bu dub dub!
I've legitimately been getting stronger and less stressful distortion thanks to your lessons on compression. Thanks man!
your natural high notes with the hyper compression sound JUST like chester right until you get higher and then it’s all REEEVVVV
I'll take that :)
16:20 soundly like the REV! Miss him!!! That was amazing!
This is amazing. Matt shawdows is so talented yet so underrated. Its really a shame
His voice on city of evil is the best he just had a weird nice distortion sound.
Legendary album
City of Evil/White Album was M Shadows besssttt vocal era. Have you listened to them live @ LBC ?! He sounded godly
@@jordanfiction Also in his newest tours(Before his throat issue); he sounded more controlled and with an epic rasp voice/scream(Like when he sings Afterlife or Paradigm).
I actually prefer his sound now a days
Yea dude city of evil sound is one hell of a sound man that album made them immortal ! Also hi best voice was between city of evil and nightmare tours ! I say around 2009 was the best that he ever sounded.
Can you do a follow up vid on how to sing like The Rev? I would love to hear some analysis of his singing style.
My god the things I'd do for a breakdown of his vocals with Pinkly Smooth. Especially considering they were what, teenagers?
Lol now someone needs to make a video, “how to play like Brian Gates...or how to play like Synyster Haner.”
I'm glad you touched on Jimmy's voice in afterlife, you honestly have a very similar distorted high range scream like him
YEEEESSSS been waiting to hear your take on his compression
This was really cool. Both Matt and the Rev have crazy vocals that are really hard to replicate. You did an amazing job replicating their singing voices, props to you.
12:39 thats is the rev voice
I like that you touched on the Rev's parts. I thought you actually did them very well too. I'd love to see a separate video on his vocals!
I really appreciate the specific segments where you take the time to say "you want this. It's not this, or this, or this" and you actually walk us through the variations and difference applications and sing multiple examples. It really does a lot of favors and it highlights the context very well.
Thank you for this. There's been virtually NO serious videos breaking down Matt's vocal technique and you do it beautifully
Can you please do one one for the Rev?? You do a fantastic job of replicating his voice, yet with your own twist. Please, I’m speaking on behalf of everyone ❤️
I learned how to scream with their album Waking the Fallen! M Shadows is the guy that made me strive to learn how to "sound like that". Just fantastic!
Now looking forward to Spencer Sotelo and Today Walker!!!
these videos are GOLD. love this
Your channel is amazing for getting experience in all (or almost all) kind of heavy singing styles. It’s good for singers who have knowledge and want to improve their singing and techniques. Good job man
My favorite 'how to sing like' video so far. Would also love one about James Hetfield and David Draiman.
Sweet!
SHADOWS IS MY FAV SINGER I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
dude... you really know what you are talking about. Still is not easy enough for beginners due to concepts and complexity of the techniques, but the way you simplify it is just amazing. I studied heavy metal and rock singing for 5 years and you are still giving me useful info. Trully grateful. I hope you get the audience you deserve, there are so many famous youtube coaches that are not even a 10% as good and always do the exact same thing, every single time. Greetings from Argentina.
This video is amazing! I've been binge watching all your videos for 3 months now, and practicing to them. I was really interested in the aggressive, compressed vocals but never got even close to sounding like that. Just kept practicing step by step what you said almost every day hoping I could get close. Just now as I'm watching this video, I felt like something clicked inside of me and I really got this one! It feels so great to finally be able to do it. Of course I can't sing the harder ones like that part for The Rev in Afterlife (yet), but the easier ones, I NAILED THEM! Easy, painless and almost effortless. It's all thanks to you, I'm really grateful I found your channel. And as an aspiring drummer-singer, it was great to find some examples from The Rev too. Really, thanks!!
"Not killing his voice"
He did kill his voice really much
Because he didn’t exercise moderation. Not because he has bad technique.
He killed his voice by screaming, not by doing the "grit".
because he had a fucking disease or something in his throat. can't remember exactly what, though
Stonehill Productions a scist
Emmm, Do you know that he recovered, and that the damage wasn't because of his technique, right? xD
He even sings better xD
Thank you so much! This was very informative, breaking up Rev:s lyrics was a positive surprise. Avenged Sevenfold has inspired me so much in my life, you rock dude!
I have been waiting this for so long sir! Thank you so much!
I've asked for this video A LOT. Thank you very much Chris!!! Aweasome vídeo as always!
Thanks for listening to our requests man!
This was much needed! ❤️
You crazy SOAB, you did it! Thank you!
omg, this is what I was looking forrrr!!!😍😍😍
This is a really great video/lesson! I enjoy the way he teaches and the information is actually helpful :)
Holy shit this guy really nails Jimmy...
I'd love to see a vid on the rev, i love the way he sang on a7x/pinkly smooth songs
Thank you so much for an amazing video, I came for the M Shadows lesson but truly stayed for The Revs lesson. I've been looking for a A7X vocal lesson for a while, as the drummer in a thrash metal band I've always wanted to get more distortion in my natural singing voice I'm definitely gonna sit down and watch a bunch of your videos! You are the man!
Sweet!!
I have been waiting for this video for so long!
Dude! You just did it again. What an awesome tutorial!
that why I love Matt Shadows and The Rev
perfect blend together
this was really helpful, i had compression all wrong until i watched this
Listening to this video really shows just how much in depth these musicians go with their music.
OMG! i love how you have the control of your voice!
YES been waiting for this for a while
edit: 13:08 is my favourite quote from the vid
Amazing.. absolutely like the rev voice
thanks Chris !!!!! you're the best teacher you'll be the best if you keep teaching us this stuff thank you !!
This was definitely a treat for me, thank you Chris for doing this vocal tutorial of my dude Matt from my favorite band. It would be awesome if it were possible to have you as a vocal coach!
That was really awesome dude, also great at explaining and very entertaining. I'm not a singer, I'm a mixer and I was super entertained.
So happy you did this video Chris. There's not many videos about M Shadows singing so thank you. Any chance in the future doing a video on Michael Starr from Steel Panther?
This channel is really good! I love it!
Absolutely phenomenal video! You help us to think about what we’re physically doing while singing and it makes a huge difference. Keep this awesome content flowing!!!
You're so welcome!
Matthew is such an amazing vocalist but his talking voice is so he should make an audio book
The vocal around the 28:20 mark isn't Matt. It's their original drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan. (R.I.P.). He was one hell of a drummer, singer, and song writer.
First time i see your videos. It was a youtube recomendation cause i was listening M Shadow´s vocal tracks and now i love your channel.
It helps a lot
I can't belive coaching like this is free to find on yt. Good job
Dude you really can sing like the Rev. Even when you replicate Shadows' high pitched parts it sounds like the Rev was singing it. Cool stuff and very interesting video. I'm an instrumental player, play a few different instruments, but I have no idea at all about singing. Cool to see some fundaments here. Cheers
29:00 my fav section, you got that ferocity internally in order to get it out. Your examples still improve me every, single, day.
I practice goofy smart shit in my car as people wonder where I get my chops from, *"I get em from shitty yodeling and dying cats, bruh."*
to anyone paying close attention, at 29:00 squeezes DOWN to feel all while already having the idea of the pitch. 29:02 he gauges the pitch and intensity, add vowels 29:03 Built momentum 29:04 Let the *Beast* Loose.
Yes yes and YES :)
From watching your videos, I can tell that Chris is actually gifted with such physical vocal cord structure that can mimic all type of vocal styles.
Another great technique video. Thank you Chris for breaking it all down!!!
15:25 and onward, he sounds like various moments with Goku from Dragonball Z lol.
Jared Wilkerson if he had hair it would’ve turned yellow!
That s so true haha
When he shows whats a healthy distortion he is exactly the same aa the voice of krillin
Sounds like CJ
Goku when he in pain
when u sing in higher pitch you sound like Jimmy! love and support from Malaysia! your videos are so helpful!
You are totally killing this Chris!!
I love this video! You explain it too good, I really wanted to see a video who explains the voice of Shadows and how he sings so beautiful, you explain it so easy and clear, love it! And the rev's voice was so unique, he was so talented!
a lot of the higher stuff is from the rev however shads does have an insane high range aswell. Check out the end of so far away (so chesty yet i think Cs) and I won't see you tonight part 1 for Ds. Unreal singer. Cheers for covering him!!
a damn you get so many of my favourite singers,
Here is another idea. it may be tricky because he has a really high range and also used to scream the life out of himself , but Bert from the Used would be awesome
Keep up the good work, i just wish my practising could keep up with the pace at which you put out videos :)
Oh man +1 for Bert McCracken
I couldnt agree more, bert used to be a beast, hes good now but not like he was back in the day
Edit^ not*
Thx for this. Favorite vocalist of all time
Thanks man! I wanted this vídeo so bad you are awesome!
How to sing like Spencer sotelo in the track Periphery- Satellites...those damn highs.
This is the distortion I've been trying to figure out. Seems difficult to control though, mine seems to end up at more of a scream/ growl than a distorted chest voice
Best M.Shadows analyzation! Thanks Chris & goodjob!
Woooooow! i was waiting for this for ages!
You forgot to mention the invisible watermelon technique
"Bro, I'm going for it but I need a distraction..." 15:21 😂😂 THIS WAS FOR REAL AN AMAZING VIDEO!! MY FAV BAND EVER! BEEN LISTENING TO THEM SINCE I WAS 5!! KEEP UP THE AMAZING VOCAL VIDEOS MAN!!😎😎🤘
Right on!!
yes, i've been wating for this! thanks
This video made my day... ive been practicin my shadows type voice for a while. I didnt even realise that i was getting the grit in the upper part. Now i jst gotta hit the notes, lol. Thx dude
22:52
Whoa…
I know you’re going for style & technique and not imitation but you just nailed all three!! Lol
Its look like chester screaming right? When i've seen he practicing vocal. Can u make video "how to sing like the rev?"
Waited for so long to a video like that one. M Shadows is like the reverse of all the "clean" or "good" sing would be, but there you are singing like it was easy and just voice tecnique, that in fact it is.
Thanks homie this was super helpful
