  • Emily Kikta describes her solo in the first movement of Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet, the first plotless work Balanchine choreographed for the much larger stage of our Lincoln Center home, and how it prepares the stage for the extravagance, elegance, and exuberance to come with her dramatic entrance.

beautiful! Also, it's time for Emily Kikta to get promoted to soloist in my opinion.

She's not even a soloist yet?

I absolutely love these videos (from ballet companies from *all over the world* not just NYCB!!) where the dancer is talking about how they feel and think about individual ballets or pieces they are performing, or favorites they’ve done in the past. Where they talk about how they approach their performance, what they like that challenges them, how they break it down, the emotions they feel when dancing that role or in that ballet or individual piece/movement and how they try to portray those emotions to the audience, etc etc.
As a retired professional ballerina myself, I really enjoy videos like this where I get to hear *dancers from all over the world, in ballet companies from all over* describe their individual mindset, mentality, approach, thoughts, feelings, emotions, etc on their performance and how they go about tackling it!
I also really enjoy the videos when they’re just telling stories, their experiences and memories of past performances, roles, experiences, when they were new to the company, when they were pre-pro and still in training, even when they were in the children’s division or just getting started in ballet when their parents first enrolled them. I just *love* hearing how each ballet dancer has their own way of approaching, executing, perfecting, fleshing out and performing their roles, performances, their career and training.
When I watch these videos and listen to what each dancer is saying - their experiences, memories and such, *it instantly brings back all my own memories that I look back on w such a fondness, nostalgia and miss SO VERY DEARLY!!*
I also enjoy to compare and contrast the different ways I approached, executed, handled, perfected, fleshed out, performed, etc vs the way they do. *There’s no singular right way of doing these things* - but it is interesting to at least take not of the differences and reflect on them.
I can’t help but be *envious & a bit jealous* of the current generation of ballet dancers who are training right now and current professional dancers bc CZcams exists and is an actual thing where you can access *endless & copious amounts of videos just like these, as well as performances & even full length ballets from all kinds of ballet dancers, the greatest dancers to ever grace the stage, (both current and former dancers from a different era, that are retired now!!), from all kinds of ballet companies from all over the world!!!*
Hell, they can even watch performances from *dancers who had their career before they were even alive, or when they were just wee babies & were too young to be able to watch, experience & appreciate that dancer, their art and just how damn talented and amazing they were!!* That blows my mind that it’s possible for them to do that - they’re so lucky!!
They can also learn SO MUCH & gain so much knowledge that they can apply to their own training and dancing that they can greatly benefit from and become a better dancer as a result. They can learn all sorts of things that can help them set themselves up to be in the best positions possible to be successful and to successful transition into a professional dancer and have the honour of being accepted into a professional ballet company!!
Hell, they can even *self teach themselves variations they haven’t been taught yet by just watching a video of a performance of it, or even give themselves a class by watching a full length class on here - the Royal Ballet has multiple videos of full classes that any dancer can follow along to give themselves a class!!*
There are COUNTLESS things they have access to now thanks to CZcams and other social media that they can do as a result of the access and availability of these things!!
I *wish* that CZcams existed way back in the *dark ages* and that I would have had access to all the things they do now! I keep thinking what I would have done w that access and availability right at my fingertips, a tap or two away, just waiting for me!! How I would have just been *soaking it all up and applying it to myself as much as I possibly could so I could improve, grow and mature as a ballerina and benefit from that access and availability as much as possible - using it to my full advantage!!*
*I’m not ashamed one bit to fully and entirely admit that I am 100% jealous and envious......that I am completely green w envy so much that I’m a very dark hunter green, lol!!*
I wonder if the current generation of ballet dancers, esp the students/pre-pro students realize *just how damn lucky and blessed they are and are grateful as a result and use it to their full advantage?!?* That they realize that just *a few generations in the past did NOT have this access and availability as CZcams and all the other social media that provides this access & availability did NOT even exist then and it was the dark ages, lol?!? I certainly hope they do!!*

What a thrill to dance this, I’m sure! Fun fact-Emily’s dad was my husband’s classical guitar teacher in Pittsburgh.
