  • Hello Everyone, Today we Restored the antique butcher's knife into a good looking Dagger. I got this knife from my elder brother's junkyard i insisted him to let me restore it and i surprised him giving a restored and good looking dagger like knife. We really did alot of hardwork on this butcher's knife and the finishing view of this restored knife is really enchanting.
And badly i did not take a good pic of old knife for thumbnail so that's way i used patch tool to make some more rusty and attractive.
The finishing view seems like a King's Dagger. I am still wonder that i made that pretty knife.

Brass is not easy to cast as like the aluminium but brass needs alot of temperature to melt down we can use our home made furnaces for melting brass. IF you to make your own furnace you can see our another project video about how to make metal melting furnace:

    o. Make a simple Metal Foundry Using Fire Bricks.
    • Video
Brass Almost melts at 900°C to 940°C.Using your Homemade Furnace. While melting brass wear safety masks to avoid zinc fumes. Also Remember to wear other SAFETY stuff during casting Metal because safety is first priority.
It was totally rusted so i removed the rust with the help of DILUTE sulphuric acid. Dilution was compulsory for reaction with iron.
Remember that use the acid with complete safety and having complete information because ACIDS are not playing liquids MUST wear safety or rubber gloves and keep outside all the procedure while you are using the acid because alot of gases fumes releases while the reaction takes place.

@Random Hands, if you're a beginner in knife making/restoring, job well done, but (just for the future projects to be so much better) if you're already using powertools, pay more attention to the detail, especially when it comes to handles, make it more symmetric, more precisely cut and I guarantee, your work will receive so much more appreciation and support for the next projects :)

The end result isnt breath taking but i can see you are working with very limited tools. For the given circumstances the result is breath taking and you show seem to know a lot about metal work.
I how ever have a suggestion: after hardening you didnt show an annealing process. If you just harden from a yellow heat in oil the blade will be very hard but britle. This can result in breaking of the blade when its in hard use. If you anneal the blade afterwards by keeping it on a lower temperature over a longer period (can be achieved with a normal baking oven) the metal gains a lot a strengh while remaining almost at the same hardness. Especially a working knive like this one would benefit a lot from it.
    Keep up the good work.

This is what many of the knives looked like that were carried by the Indian fighters known as the "Long Knives", on the early American frontier of the "Old Northwest", i.e. Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, etc. Nice to see it being given a new life! I wouldn't necessarily consider it a "dagger" per se, unless you're comparing it to the Muslim "jambiya" dagger, which I guess it kiiinda looks like.😁

@Kai Lewis and @Golden Keeper Because a restoration preserves the original form. The blade has been through quite a change, having been reforged to a large extent, and the handle is absolutely gone.
There's no intent to preserve the original here. I'd call it more like 'upcycling a very old blade simply because you could'.
Thing is, with all the time, energy and money that went into remaking that knife, you could probably buy a brand new one. Since it was less restored and more recycled, you can't even justify it as 'a sentimental investment that was worth the work'.
I'd like to think this was more a test of OPs skill, and that they can continue to improve their abilities by learning from their process here.

    • @samalberry2367
      @samalberry2367 Před 5 lety +78

I just commented this myself. The entire point of restoration is to keep your own ideas out of the process, and restore it as close to the original version as possible. I was so upset that they completely butchered the handle and original pieces, it was such a shame to turn what could have been a wonderful example of an antique knife into something that honestly doesn’t even look that good now. It’s a shame.
