Celeste's Hidden Tutorial

  • Celeste isn’t an easy game. Lucky there are things that make it easier. There’s obvious stuff like the assist mode. Then there’s less obvious things like coyote time. And if you look deep enough, there’s a subtle, practically hidden part of Celeste, that makes the whole game a little easier. I could call it a lot of different things but, it boils down to a hidden tutorial. Hidden in plain sight. And it’s not like those other, invisible tutorials, where the game puts you an a new situation with a clean solution. No. Celeste’s hidden tutorial is a bit more complicated than that. So in this video, I'll explain how this tutorial teaches you to use different objects, with similarities.

I just realized the oshiro boss fight prepares you for the snowballs which both of those together prepares you for the seekers
they all have the jump on it and regain dash mechanic, the oshiro boss has the dash, the snowballs let you practice the jumping off them, and when you see the seeker dash in chapter 5 you know somewhat how to avoid it
edit: or maybe the snowballs prepare you for the jumps you have to do off the slow moving ice things all throughout chapter 8

Panga, a SMM2 and Kaizo Mario legend, has talked about the "formula" for SMM levels recently: introduce a gimmick, teach the player the basics, and then make them learn new techniques with the gimmick. It's similar to zippers in 1A and Dash Activated Blocks in 5A: Introduce objects that give Madeline momentum, then mix it up a bit. The formula is very useful and makes for incredibly fun levels to play and watch :)

I always liked this type of 'leveling tutorial' (at least, thats what I'm calling it) where it never *outright* tells you 2 things work alike, instead they give you something easy to learn, then add a little something to make it harder, then when you get used to that, do it again and again without you ever realizing it. It kinda feels like the scene in dragon ball with goku taking off the weighted clothes, where you don't realize how far you've gotten until you get there. At first, you struggle with the traffic light blocks, then you immediately understand how the dash blocks work, then next thing you know you're a master. Always liked that type of intentionally gradual growth.

6:55 i think dream blocks are still a part of this in a way in bsides csides and farewell. The game teaches you how the dream blocks work in chapter 2 but then in bsides (and others) the game expands upon this by teaching you about jumping out of them for extra height and about the ability to grab on to one right after coming out of it. It’s much easier to understand this because you already know the fundamentals of the dream blocks just like the other object connections. Even though it’s the same object it is very much the same idea imo

The snowballs may actually be a tutorial for another game. There's a Pico 8 cartridge of the original Celeste, and also a Pico 8 for a 'Celeste 2' where the main mechanic is a grappling hook that lets you pull yourself forward. A segment of the game similar to the Golden Ridge has you using the grapple to grab snowballs, then throw them and bounce on them to reach the end of certain screens.

I noticed most of this stuff playing through the game the first time. It’s something that seems obvious at first, like of course the later mechanics are going to build off of easier to understand older mechanics, but the more you think about it, actually putting those mechanics into an actual game and having the difficulty curve flow as you gain knowledge and understanding is something I tip my metaphorical hat to.

this is that "its obvious it should be done" type thing, not an obvious "does it itself thing". These types of things usually take a lot more time to do than the non-obvious but fun mechanics that come out of nowhere. It was probably easier to think of the traffic block than the dash block just because a new idea is easier than a better/harder iteration while keeping the original idea fun. Mad props to Maddie for doing it so well!

Dream blocks are connected back to dash crystals, the way they can be chained together and each returns your dash. Dream blocks connect forward to feathers, being a form of extended faster movement. Dream blocks restrict you to straight lines in specific zones, where the feather only gives you a timer.
Dream blocks in the B-side are also where dream jumps are introduced, which connect back to how momentum works in zippers and dash blocks, and connect forward to the way you can take momentum from your own dashes in wallbounces and wavedashes.
    They're actually plenty connected. :)

in my head, the snoballs work off oshiro, which is then explored further by the seekers from chapter 5.
and dream block work similarly to kevinblocks as platforms you have to dash into to interact.
in the case of snowballs, the progression goes clearly telegraphed and chasing you in the same direction you are going, making bonking it easy, to harder to predict ones coming againsg you, making the timing harder, to freely moving obstacles that chase you
and for dreamblocks it goes from platform you have dash into to go the same way you dashed, that you can platform around like a normal block to get your bearings before dashing, to a platform you dash into to go the opposite way, that you then HAVE to platform around once you dash to use.

The best part about coyote time and the other mechanics that help you, is that they are never actually required in the entire main game. A lot of custom maps have tricks that require these mechanics and I honeslty don't like it.
The only thing in the entire game that ever requires you to a corner jumps or use coyote time to make a jump is for the winged golden strawberry for chapter 1 (aka chapter 1 dashless). Yes these mechanics are a must in like 90% of custom maps.

The dream blocks in my opinion are similar to green bubbles. They make you travel a certain amount of distance before giving you your dash back. Now I'm not saying that it's true, but it could be, who knows?

Think about this, theo prepares you for the jelly. It teaches you how to throw it, that it can go through spinners (circle spikes) and other dangerous objects, and that it can activate touch and dash switches. The jelly expands upon that with adding gliding and gaining hight. And the gaining hight part is technically possible with theo, although less affective.
