"Friends" shop video - • Akihabara Game Shops: ...
#Tokyo #Akihabara #RetroGaming - Hry
From Akihabara Retro games of Akihabara are sold for foreigners and gamemakers, so games and main body are very high. For Japanese purchasing retro games cheaply, we go to "hard off" of stores dealing with games and home appliances, which are very cheaply sold for games. Among them, the junk corner available at a discount price is 100 yen for Famicom and PlayStation software, 100 yen for the main body, GameCube and PlayStation 100 yen, Playstation 2, XBOX 360, Playstation 3, Super Nintendo Enter 500-2000 yen Please try. "Hard off" is recommended for suburban shops.
I was going to say... I'd love seeing a follow up to this video where he compares these prices to some of the Off stores
I haven't been to Hard Off in a long time. The best are in west Tokyo, Hamura, Akishima, Hachiouji and Tachikawa and I live in the Ogikubo area. It's a bit far.
THANK U FOR THIS.I TRIED HARD OFF .REALLY AMAZING PRICES..ARIGATO GOZAIMASU
IF U ARE A JAPANESE CAN U MAKE US A HARD OFF CONSOLE COMPARAISON PLEASE. IT WILL BE AWESOME
Fantastic tour love seeing those old Japanese ads
☺ ♥ 🇯🇵
I'm making my first trip to Japan in April. Love watching your videos - they get me pumped up for it.
instablaster.
japan streets looks like bladerunner
It`s funny to see those systems being sold... some with their prices really high! 10 years ago, you could find those same consoles in trash bins. Some friends of mine brought back home some Core Graphics, famicons and others.
The prices on those consoles are way different then here in Europe. The PlayStation consoles there are so expensive in Japan while the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast are so cheap when I compare specially the boxed consoles.
since i've moved to japan, i've visited akihabara countless times and all these stores but have never really gained any insight on how to shop for retro consoles. your video has shed lots of light on this subject, thanks and keep up the good work!
Happy I could help. :) Thanks for watching!
oooo that lo-fi intro. That orange Dreamcast box with the presidents face on it. I would absolutely be going home with that.
Bring some money and an empty piece of luggage, go home with a ton of games.
Splash a little more cash and get the Regulation #7 one 😁
These videos are awesome!..thank you!..watch em over and over lol
Your videos are great man👏 definitely keep them flowing!👍
Love your vids man keep up with the retro exploring
I like how they neatly wrap them and display it on the shelves like any other thing.
Very valuable video! Thanks man.
THANK YOU ! You're answering all the questions I had about the price of some consoles I'd like to buy next time I go in Japan :) +1 subscriber, good job for your videos !
Really loving these vlogs keep them up
Awesome video
Helps withe the planning for the holidays
love you videos man im bench watching all your videos at the moment
Wow nice video, just discovered this, love these kind, man I wish there was a place here in the states like this were all kinda used consoles are simply just available, thanks for posting👌
Wow nice video, just discovered this, love these kind, man I wish there was a place here in the states like this were all kinda used consoles are simply just available
Love these vids Jeff. Keep it up.
And also, the thing I like most about Japan is the cleanliness and organization they have overall. Everything is nice and neat wrapped up. My parents visited a few times and they have said the same. In the Us I've been in shops that have consoles thrown into bins cracked. Gotta respect that.
Those staircases on the way up to super potato.... are like a right of passage... I swear I feel like I'm going to fall down them one of these days.
You literally described me next year, as I want to take a week or more vacation and go to Japan, mostly Akihabara. Seriously thank you for the video.
My pleasure. Happy hunting. :)
Man, I really expected the prices to be a lot better especially a year and a half ago. You're shattering my dreams of visiting Japan and getting all the retro Japanese consoles I'm missing.
Theirs a lot more other stores like Hard Off that have cheaper and better prices
my bro you made me really happy today with this vid i love consoles and i found a few more i haven't seen before now i can gush over them and never afford them lol thanks !
Awesome video. Would love to see some angry store clerks for sure!!! Cheers!
Great video-thanks!!!
Very informative video, I was visited Akihabara a couple of months ago, Traders, Super Potato, Surugaya, Beep, Retro Game Camp dungeon except "Friends"(That don't looks like tourist-friendly in this video) and buy some classic video games to home. Also I go to TRY Amusement Tower to play Arcade games. It's a fun trip to visiting Japan when you found out there's a place can match up your hobbies and interests.
two years ago i went to Tokyo, all my finds on videogames were in Nakano Broadway and Book-Off stores, a lot of games between ¥100 and ¥2000
Great vid! good to see prices from these stores.. suprised by some prices though, almost amazed at how high they are, being in australia and buying from japan regularly on ebay even inc postage there can be some bargains found at a lower price than these stores!
We'll be there next week, should be tons of fun!
Loved this video. Watched with the wife and she said we need to go to japan one day lol
Every thing is just so cool!
I’ve been in the market for a PC engine but I’m not sure on how to get one.
If I could favourite this video anymore I would
Great stuff
Awesome video mate, will definitely use this knowledge for when I go to japan! Could you maybe make a similar video for handheld consoles in the future? Definitely want to get some cool Nintendo handhelds when I go.
Awesome video and agree with the last comments!
that one commercial of the gaming system, looked like the games were being fed into it like bullets. that was cool.
awesome video as always!!!!! did the OG XBOX have Japan exclusives like the 360 did?
Love the music in your videos!!! (Please give track names if at all possible!)
Great content! I'll be using this as my guide for my upcoming trip to japan for console hunting, one question, some of the box console look really good,, is it a new old stock(nos)😀😀
found ur channel by accident ... remembers me of my time in Tokio..🤗🤗
1:11-2:25 I love how the Baki 2018 theme song is playing because I love that song!!
0:54 16:55 MIKU CHAN!!!!!!!
Speaking of Miku... I hope you haven't forgotten about the Gotchapon...
Another great video from Akiba. Also you might want to try looking in their Mandarake branch store. I hear used items there are reasonably priced and they do have a large selection of games and such.
I went back to Gacha Gacha today actually but didn't see the same machine. That video was filmed a few months ago, they might have changed some of the machines since then.
@@MadPanicGaming czcams.com/video/WWaLxFIVX1s/video.html
If you find a Miku one again please let me know. Also if you find of Kantai Collection.
That discolored dream cast tho, I saw that I was like damn a gold dream cast for 50 bucks 😂
Love the video!
16:12 the SC-3000 is the computer version of the SG-1000 game console (as in the predecessor to the Mark III / Master System). The SC-3000 can run SG-1000 games in addition to its own SC-3000 computer programs.
Very nice thanks for sharing.
My pleasure.
Was there 1998 when they released the Sega Dreamcast, the prices were insane low back then :)
Friends! Love that shop.
The Regulation #7 is the cheapest Limited Edition Dreamcast with 2000 Units at the Start.
It was used for Pachinko Parlors. It was shipped with a Broadband Adapter.
It also looked sexy as heck, with all its components.
If you are wondering what they are going for and what they look like, jump on ebay there are a few on there for around the 800 dollar mark..
Those discolored/nicotine stained saturns must have gotten some great usage, I wonder how many of those were in student living spaces with KOF, SS or SF mini tourneys and tons of beer.
They got a smart strategy packaging those games as it feels more like a sealed item, which will attract people to buy the item more!
that is a dream trip I will go and taste it one day... Inshalla!!
these prices are comparable to what I pay at local retailers here in idaho. That said I remember when these were much cheaper :(
I found some of my best deals at Super Potato... and it was the one that was supposedly the most expensive which ended up having the very best deals. $7 for an official Nintendo S-Video cable, $0.45 for a Virtua Gun, about $7 for a “junk” white Saturn that worked perfectly, etc. Heck, even the one in Kyoto was charging twice as much for Game Boy clamshells (100 ¥ versus 50 ¥)! Yes, I went to both in Akihabara and the main one was where all the good deals were when I visited in Spring 2017).
I'm planning to go Tokyo for 2021 to just specifically buy as many Japan version pokemon games, GameCube and Game Boy Advance. Do you think I could find every pokemon game cheaper in Japan? I saw you showed a GameCube at around $40! Did you find any GBA SP AGS 101 and for how much? Thanks for the video, bro! Very informative!
26:45 - That’s a much better deal than the earlier boxed one. $440 versus nearly $600 and it’s the “Gold” set that includes two joysticks.
When I studied abroad in Japan a couple years back, I would see consoles at Hard Off and Mandarake for cheaper prices than Trader. However I was living in Oita, which is countryside, and their selection wasn't the greatest. I was able to snag a like new fat ps2 with two controllers and 5 memory cards on Amazon for like 9000 yen.
Looks like an awesome place to live!
That Regulation #7 is a black dreamcast :)
I was thinking of getting HDMI clone because it easier to deal with then having to get a PAL-HDMI converter. In the end I never bought anything except a Famicom classic.
to be fair. If have one day in Tokyo. Go to Ikebukuro around the Sunshine City.
I allways find something nice in the Bookoff there, you have a Pokemon Center there and you find all kind of Food there
Hey dude great video. Those FDS, do you know if they typically do a belt replacement or just sell it as is?
I'm not sure. If they do a replacement I'm guessing it'll be labeled as such.
going back tokyo in february cant wait
great video dude, really informative video. i am hunting for Neo Geo machine
Excellent tour Jim, I'll be going to Japan in March. What are the rules with filming insides the stores? Are you allowed and do you have to ask permission?
It's better to ask for permission but most of them are cool with it. I've actually gotten permission to film in Friends before but that guy was just extra annoyed on this day or something, idk.
Sheesh, I hope I can avoid being told off by clerks in Tokyo! I hope the guy at Friends was agressive because he saw you filming, otherwise I´d be scared to go shopping there!
Ofcourse hes angry about the filming, but dont expect to get greeted when you walk in. This guy doesnt do the whole tokyo store clerk greeting thing cx
I´m alright with that. If he´s working when I get there I´ll just try my best to be a respectable customer. The shop itself seems nice.
He was just pissed because I had a camera, which is weird because I've been given permission to film there on multiple occasions.
One of the dudes at the TRADER was a dick to my wife. She had a DS console in her hand and looking at other consoles in the glass case by the entrance on the main street and he came up and snatched the console out of her hand. She was not happy, and I don't blame her. We still bought stuff there regardless. We've been to that store many times, and will still go there. I think a lot of stores are on edge in a way as I think most people aren't looking forward to the large amount of Gaijin going to Japan next year for the Olympics.
We've Been to Japan a few times (just got back and will back again in a few months) and rarely come across rude Japanese while there.
Seriously, what the hell is that dude's damage?
I really wish you would've showed that Bandai Vectrex in super patato (the console with the built-in CRT), but you walked right past it..Would've been interesting to see the price, compared to what they usually sell for here in the states, since they're extremely rare. Very cool stuff you showed though, overall. Cheers
Pretty sure that Vectrex is for display only.
So much amazing.
22:35 - They didn’t include an AC adapter originally. That was standard in Japan for ‘80s consumer electronics, probably because of some prefectures having different power specifications. They left it out of the Super Famicom too since you were expected to re-use your Family Computer AC adapter. It’s a practice they often justify today with portable electronics that fit the same charger as the previous model. Nintendo first tried this in the USA with the New 3DS XL and they tried it in EU/AU earlier with the 3DS XL or DSi XL (can’t recall which). Heck, even the Mini Family Computer and Super Famicom do not include the USB power brick even though they do in the USA. PlayStation Classic doesn’t include it worldwide!
Here in my town you find 12 ps1 games that probably don't work in terrible cases that are the wrong ones bundled together for 30 bucks. So I think all of that stuff is fair priced
Those prices are crazy. Never been to Japan. Didn't know that they charge that much for old consoles.
Its because of the sudden rise of the "collectors" scene.
Its annoying. Because before, these stores never charged that much, they were there to sell nostalgia and for people to meet and talk about the good old days of gaming.
People bought the consoles and games because they actually wanted to play the games also.
Now they know and cater for the collectors, and who can blame them, they can make more cash from it just by looking up some price list that someone decided to make and work off that.
US collectors are probably the most annoying.
Now I want to go to Japan for retro game shopping
What I like about retro game hunting in Japan is you can actually find some games cheaper depending on where you go.
I remember finding Kirby on NES for like 22 bucks in a very good condition while I saw a more roughed up copy in Mandarake for $40.
I need to get a Japanese PS2 I got the fours Ys remake on PS2 and cannot play them :(
And the PC Engine Duo console is so expensive I wonder why this console is so high priced like this compared to the others .
Hay Jim just wanted to thank you for your videos, I finally found some of these games I was looking for to add to my collection found on eBay
GUNDAM WING W ENDLESS DUEL $36.50
Parodius Da $22.00
Go GO Akman 1,2,3_$46.00
Darius Twin + Super R Type $26.95
If it were not for your videos I wouldn't know they existed thanks very much.
Awesome! I'm glad I could help you find some great games! :)
Not sure Friends is the most aptly named store. That xbox 360 joystick for $7 and saturn for $20 are a steal!
The old lady is much nicer.
Those twin famicoms looking sexy as hell! But those prices, yeesh. I bought an AV famicom few years ago for $80 boxed. Best place I I can recommend in one of the big cities is den den town in Osaka. Almost 20-40% lower if I remember correctly.
As some have said, maybe do your talking in post, so you're not as noticable. Also maybe at least buy something even if it's cheap so you're not leaving a bad impression.
Nice seeing all those consoles! WOW! Any chance you could find out if any of those stores have a keyboard and mouse for a sharp x68000 computer? I would pay you a finders fee if you could find those two. Thanks!
Beep would probably have that.
Who's Beep?
@@argniests5357 It's one of the stores he covered. czcams.com/video/AHMxlmrshBk/video.html
there is something to say about walking into a store and being able to take home a neo geo aes boxed lol!
What do you guys think about these shops prices compared to like Hard Off? I love hard off but I don't know if they even exist around akiba area.
Hard Offs in west Tokyo or outside of Tokyo are great places to hunt for games, you just need the time to make the trip out.
Isn't there a Hard Off or Book Off somewhere in Akihabara? Do they have any consoles or games normally... lol... I just googled it and guess whose video popped up? Speaking of which, are you planning to make any more Hard Off hunter videos?
Yeah, I'll make more Hard Off videos when I have the time.
Hey Jim, have you ever been to Kaden no Ken (I think it is called) in Tokyo Radio Dept Store?
Nope, never been there.
You could sneak more with the camera if you kept quiet and added your comments later. But one should always respect the no camera rule if there is such a rule in a shop.
It's odd though, I was given permission to film in Friends multiple times before, just this day I guess he was especially annoyed.
De är en spel affär, inte ett knarkhus så skitsamma, han filmar inte människorna där ändå
KidShoryuken in my experience the brothers at Friends are quite rude and unwelcoming.
Lots of my Japanese retro friends don’t really like them
I'm really interested in the PC Engine/TGFX16. I remember reading about it in my old gamepros and wondering what it was and now that i'm grown up and having you and Happy Console Gamer talk about it so much i'm looking more into it. just wondering why it's so expensive. Just started my import sega Saturn collection too.
US TG16 stuff is expensive because it's fairly rare and PC Engine stuff is always in demand, so the prices are always pretty high. Still, one of my all time favorite consoles.
Agreed, I’ve got the Turbo Duo, it’s rare and good so prices will never drop. FYI they do make an Everdrive for it, I got mine for 60$ from a guy on EBay named Ninja and that beats trying to get all the great games separately. I don’t know how the PC Engine works but the Duo allows you to play every disc version. Look into that if you’re not aware of it.
Very interesting. Saturn and DC are more affordable than in the West, but the PS2 and Turbo Duo are almost as expensive. Also thought it was interesting that the boxes don’t seem to add as much value as you’d expect. I guess it’s because so many Japanese gamers conserve their console boxes.
and the mega drive being so expensive? i'm happy with my model 2, but that's what I grew up with so i'm biased.
Hey just out of curiosity, you couldnt help me figure out something could you? Lol. A game for PSP called Kingdom of Paradise 2: Busouden lol. So I start the game up, and you can go to this one area that has several bosses you can fight from the start, but they are to high powered. You go the other way and you go to a bar where then I get stuck out in an alley. I can't read japanese and it is asking the player to do something, but I have no clue what to do.
Have you looked up a video guide?
Also take note about possible region lock.
Found a Power Base Converter in Trader for 3000 yen. It was the North American version, so got lucky on that one.
Surprised at the FDS cost. Super Potato sells them for 5000, and they're considered the expensive game shop.
Was disappointed in Friends. Bought a Saturn joystick in box, and it doesn't work :(
Good Lord those Akiba thourist prices! eBay pricing (and sometimes worse!). Was the guy that yelled at you the balding short guy with glasses? If so, he's quite standoffish. When we went in to pitch Yuki, he was pretty apprehensive. And all we were trying to do was give him a demo. The old lady is his mom and she was very nice and it's a decent store with so-so prices. Cheaper than the chain stores. Great video Jimmers!
1200000¥
Yep, it was him. He always seems so annoyed all the time.
Oh my God thank you
Are there less touristy places to shop than Akiba if you are looking for deals?
He's always nice to me when I go in there, so is the other dude and their mom. I always ask for everything in Japanese, msybe that's why?
love your videos,i have a couple of questions tho: 1) Will those consoles work on european crt tv (crt tv from the mid 2000's)? 2) are in Tokyo shops that sells retro pc parts, like video card etc from the 90's?
I can answer the first question, sadly no. Japanese TV run at 60hertz while European TV run at 50hertz. They do make converters but good ones can be pricey and you still need a step down power converter for the consoles.
No. You'd need an adapter for them. Japan is NTSC like North America. As for your other question it's hard to say. You may want to try one of the older mom&pop electronic stores that's been around since the 80s and 90s.
Yes they will work fine but you need 2 things:
1) A voltage converter adaptor from 110v to 220v,or else you kill the console.
2) You need to pair them with RGB scart for being colour in pal crt tvs (japanese also had scart but with little different layout). With RCA or RF you get black and white. If you connect them on LCD tv,then there is no problem with RCA cables.
Some consoles like Megadrive can be easily moded to run in pal mode.
A step-down converter is only required if the console has the power supply built-in. For my Famicom AV and Super Famicom I just use Sega 1602-05 UK Mega Drive 1 power adapters as they're the required DC 10V centre-negative. And I haven't owned a CRT consumer colour TV for over 10 years as I switched to auto-voltage or 230V NTSC/60Hz-supporting CRT monitors.
Lol i didnt realize until now that my famicom has a av mod. Found it here in cailfornia at a local shop for $50. I'm just so use to my old consoles having av so i didnt think it was weird for the famicom to have it.
It's a different model and it's called the av famicom, the Sharp twin famicom also does AV.
@@jackhakken the AV mod on the original Famicom is common, especially on ones imported into North America because the RF modulates on a channel out of range of most North American TVs.
Man, I wish I had options like this near me even for NA.
by the way have you ventured outside of Tokyo to check prices on consoles?
Yes, I have a whole series of videos dedicated to hunting games in Hard Off stores.
Thanks for the video, Jim. Haven't been to Tokyo for a few years... cringe each time you show those price tags. Down here in Nagasaki, Hard Off does still have buried treasure from time to time. Manga Souko isn't bad either. Since discovering Mercari though I rarely use Yahoo auction anymore.
I would have loved a Super Cassette Vision, but couldn't justify $200 just for the console.
Always find the maids from the maid cafes interesting
I found Book-Off had good prices when I went. I
You forgot the link in the description? (for Friends)
Yep, sorry about that. I added it to the description.
Is there a way to order these boxed consoles near these prices plus shipping? Or would you be down to help lol
is it hard to find fm towns martys consoles there? i didn't see any last time i was there. They go for so much much online.
I never see those.
Was just in aki and every store i went to didn't have any, including games. Might be best to try japan yahoo auctions. This place is way overpriced for tourists.
Try Beep in Akihabara
But be prepared for premium prices
lmao thank goodness ebay prices aren't like that, most of the prices I've seen are like half of the second shop for common stuff like famicom/super famicom.
Gotcha Jim. Some of my Japanese acquaintances use to tell me that in Japan, it's a society that regards old tech as no value after awhile. Now I don't know if that's 100% right, but always curious if that holds truth over in Japan.
Anthony...
does any of these shops offer online and international sales?
"Friends"
