    I love how the Japanese culture are happy when people want to wear their traditions, instead of screaming cultural appropriation they see it as a form of flattery. This is a beautiful way of thinking. Copy is the highest form of flattery.

      I just re read my comment and realised how rude I sounded so I wanted to clarify- by ‘real deal’ I meant as in the process to becoming a geisha or being a geisha aside from the appearance- sorry if I offended anyone or anything.

      The thing to really think about though is what the person is doing with those traditions. Like here, it's wonderful with people, nationals and tourists alike, enjoying and appreciating the culture with respect. I love that - it helps build a connection and understanding with the world around you while being an awesome experience! But, there are boundaries. For example, as a Native American, it's kinda insulting to see people wear poorly done, well, mockaries of lots of different traditional chlothing, war paint, ect., particularly around Halloween. That and the war bonnets at football game day parties. It gives off the feeling, intentional or not, that my culture is somthing of a joke, not respected enough to be taken seriously. They're done, generally, without thought or respect to the culture or cultures they originate from. It quite honestly boils down to one's dedication/intent to use/wear/do something in its proper setting, having researched before to fully see what you are doing (ie, does this piece of chlothing have a major significance that I do not grasp/wish to emulate, ect.), and being mindful (if applicable) to the historical connotations of you doing whatever. It's always good to ask someone from the culture if you can, if nothing else for a source of info on whatever you may be doing.

    Wow. I would’ve loved to have this experience as I’m an American makeup artist. When I was visiting Japan, I walked in to a place where they sold the most beautiful kimonos I have ever seen. And the women who worked there grabbed me and just kind of started dressing me in one of their kimonos. I didn’t realize till after I was wearing it all that the whole ensemble was 10’s of thousands of dollars. I was so honored that these women wanted me to wear one of their robes, but I found out later that she said it was an honor and good luck for a geijing to wear the kimono. What a beautiful country and people.

    I did a similar thing. During our stay in Kyoto my husband and I took a day to rent kimono and wander about a side street filled with wonderful little shops, restaurants, shrines, and lovely pocket-sized temples. We picked a rental shop that showed the most magnificent men's kimono in the window. Most are grey or black. This one was gleaming white. It was a little tricky for them to dress us. He's 6'2" and I am plus sized, but they managed. Shoes were the only really insurmountable problem, but only for me. They actually came up with a pair for his size 13 (American) feet. My wide foot was something they just couldn't manage, but I compromised and chose a pair men's that fit me quite well. I'm a history re enactor, and dressing up is something quite common for me, so the ritual of getting into kimono was no problem at all. I think they were a little surprised that the tight winding of an obi did not bother me, but when you wear 19th century corsets, the compression is actually something you come to enjoy.
    The only friction was when they wanted to do my hair in Maiko style. I'm 72 years old and I thought that was silly. I chose, instead, a Japanese matron's style. My dresser told me that in the history of the shop, I was the only one who ever requested it. We all giggled like schoolgirls the whole time.
    It must have been a holiday or vacation time because there were hundreds of Japanese similarly attired wandering about the tiny street. I think we posed for at least a hundred photos with all manner of friendly, happy people. Most did not speak English--or only a few words, about on a par with my limping Japanese. Nobody batted an eye at the two Americans in their midst, instead they were delighted that we wanted to partake in their lovely day. Smiles greeted us everywhere. It was one of the happiest days of my life. I can't wait to go back.

    I dressed in full Katsura wig, wedding Furisode and faked a Darari Obi knot out of a Maru obi for Halloween as well as the Geta and even made a Washi Paper Chochin lantern on a lacquered bamboo stick I cut from a local bamboo forest complete with a flickering bulb inside. I went as a Kitsune and while I got so many compliments from people from Japan on the accuracy in dressing myself, the movements were quite difficult! It was like wearing a corset and even though I know how to walk in Geta, and it was 8pm at night I felt like I was under the blazing sun so I cant even imagine being in that outfit all DAY! 😱

    I had no clue this was a thing for tourists, that would be so cool to try someday, it would be especially interesting to see how it would look on me seeing as I'm Irish and pretty much as white as white can be XD (Although chances are I couldn't afford it, but it's good to have dreams XD)

    • @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley
      @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley Před 4 lety +15

      They value white skin, so you'd be fine. Now the interesting part would come with someone like myself, as I'm black, lol! (Or African American, if you wish). I'd love to try this though sans the white makeup. Still get the pink around the eyes and the porcelain lips and just do my own foundation before arriving. And my hair is already close to black so it would be okay if it were spray painted, lol! I'm probably a bit too old for the maiko look so a mature geisha would be nice.

      They have these types of " dress ups" in many many countries. One time I was dressed up as a Tribal Woman in Thailand and all the locals were laughing so hard and taking pics...I did not know which camera to look at. This one is probably expensive cause it took so much time.

      @@jessyncust76 I'm not going to say "should", but it would be nice, lol. I actually got a glimpse of what a black woman as a geisha would sort of look like by watching this video of a biracial woman who was born and raised in Japan. Seeing her and her black side of the family (I suppose female cousins and such) in full furisode kimono and hair pulled back and decorated was pretty amazing and just really goes to show the versitility of how it can fit with almost anyone.

    Very interesting! I know it’s uncomfortable. That outfit weighs a lot and the obi is meant to be like a corset. That’s why maiko-san and geiko-san take smaller steps (the kimono restricts your gait). And generally walk a bit more slowly.

    • @Oshidorinohina
      @Oshidorinohina Před 4 lety +6

      @@Oshidorinohinaobviously when you’re rushing from appt to appt, you walk faster. But if you’ve ever worn a kimono and know actual kimono manners, you are supposed to walk a bit slower with your thighs together and back straight. I know what I’m talking about.

    You actually have a Maiko uniform... The difference is, Maiko have a red collar, while Geiko/Geisha have a white collar... Maiko usually have one lip painted when it's their first year, and both lips after one year, Geiko/Geisha usually are around 20 or older when they become one, Shikomi (an apprentice of the arts) are usually 70 pounds because all the ACTUAL accesories can weigh up to/more/less (than) 10kg. You do look stunning though! Geisha/Geiko also usually don't have the Kanzashi, they have more sophisticated looks (Kanzashi is the hair accessories). I am quite experienced and am trying to become a Shikomi at the moment, if you have any questions feel free to ask! ^^
