    I decided to set myself the challenge of making some music using a retro video game for the PS1 called Music 2000. After making some beats on the PlayStation I use a Yamaha MT8X cassette recorder as the multitrack device for the overdubs.

    My uncles used a tascam 788 which was a digital 8 track machine that allowed you to record twice on each track so it was a 16 track machine. They would hook the red and white audio wires into the back of the 788 and press play and record the beat in real time to the 788 memory card . People thought that they used a big budget studio because of the sound quality of the music generator and the 788 .

      That sounds like a great little setup! Did they do overdubs with other instruments after they laid down the stereo track from the music generator?

    Pretty cool, nice one!
    My pals used to use this back around the millennium. Some great compositions they did, techno/brain dance.
    I was using a tape 4 track and went into recording mixes to mini disc with my gear. No one thought of using m2000 with a 4 track though. It was a bit limited but using it conjunction would have opened more possibilities :)

    • @wehappyfewmusic
      @wehappyfewmusic  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Cool, I bet your mates had a deeper understanding of M2000 than me, I only really scratched the surface here. 😊
      I found the game gave me some good starting points but felt more at home with the tape overdubs, and was able to develop the idea a bit more with a live track on top.

    I never paid much mind to video games, so I was ignorant of the fact that some of them featured DAWs..? Nice 8-track. I still have my Yamaha MT-120 cassette 4-track which still works as perfectly today as it did when I bought it new around 1993...ish? Yamaha made the best -sounding cassette "studios" by far. I swear the sound quality is comparable to any good reel-based tape machine. It made the Teac 144 sound like a K-Mart tape recorder Little Suzie used to record her and her friends singing "Ring around the Rosie" . Hmm, wasn't this interesting all around. Thanks for posting this.

    • @wehappyfewmusic
      @wehappyfewmusic  Před 6 měsíci

      Hey, yes Yamaha are the unsung hero’s of tape machines in my opinion! They never seem to be as popular/well regarded as the Tascam’s, but as you say have great sound quality. Thats impressive that you’re MT-120 is still going strong, and that you’ve kept hold of it for over 30 years (I’ve got a bad habit of flipping gear 😅).

    • @wehappyfewmusic
      @wehappyfewmusic  Před 29 dny +1

      Hi, thanks for checking out the video and the sub!
      You’ll need to run a stereo rca phono audio lead out of your PlayStation and plug the other end into your Mac via an audio interface. If you want to keep all the instruments separate so you can remix them on your Mac, you’ll need to record each track one at a time from music 2000 in real time (just mute everything apart from the track you’re transferring).
      Set the BPM in your DAW to the same as it is in Music 2000 before you start. Once everything is in your computer program you’ll just need to line them up so they are in sync.
