I think the days of awards dictating whether a film is good are over. I feel it's the audiences who are creating the waves. There are so many good films that never see the light of mainstream cinema, thus, awards, which are mainly mainstream, never recognizes them.

Haigh said he was trying to get scene done completely right. The moment that Harry holds on just little too long onto Adam’s hand made it the most real scene imaginable. I’ve been there. I’ve don’t that. It’s authentic and organic, just that one simple thing. Whoever came up with that perfect moment is a true genius. I’m trying to watch it again but I have to let my head and my heart settle down a bit.

I watched the film yesterday and now seeing this scene again I’m in tears. If only this moment played out differently.
When I was in the cinema and the ending happened, after crying a lot over that last scene with the parents, I was almost too defensive to let it affect me. But then, talking to my friend I saw it with about our own childhoods and our experiences of queer loneliness, it ended up sinking in for me. This movie wrecked me, and it will stay with me forever.

I see this film as psychodrama. The apartment block is Adam's 'self'. The fire alarm is a signal that we are about to enter a catharsis - the sudden 'appearance' of Adam's parents is part of this. Harry is Adam's younger self, who cannot bear the weight of remembered trauma, and is overwhelmed with grief. His death is symbolic; adult Adam 'rescues' his inner child, now liberated from the horror of losing his parents as a boy, and promises to take care of him.

Painfully disappointing film. After the highs of Weekend and 45 Years, I was offended by how cloying and emotionally manipulative this film was. From the acting, the script, the soundtrack - everything was manipulative, obvious and direct. The narrative conceit is painful, the parents are 80s cliche, it's almost as if Richard Curtis was trying to do a serious drama. There is little room for subtlety in this film - haven't been this disappointed in a film in a long, long while.
