- Ah film grain. It's cool, it's cinematic, but when should we use it in our videos? And why? What does putting film grain over our footage actually do for our film? We'll talk about these questions today, and I'm also giving away 3 free 4k film grain overlays you can use in your films, whether you use Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, or Davinci Resolve. If you need help with using them, there's a short tutorial towards the end of the video that'll show you how to use the overlays. Cheers!

I wish there were more videos about the “when’s ” and “why’s” instead of just the “how”. This video was very insightful! Thank you sm for the tips.
You’re welcome! Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed it 😊
definitely
you are totally right , when and why are so much more important than how
One place where I think Film grain really helps is in 2d animation.
Especially one that is made on a TV budged.
As it helps to give a sense of texture to otherwise really flat looking drawings which I think can often help make them look better.
It also helps to coverup some weaker animation.
I’m here cause i wanted to add grain to my animation. Wasn’t sure if it was a good idea. Now i am. Thanks
Good for animation mixxed with video as well. Helps blend the two so the contrast between irl and animation isn’t so drastic
Something else that needs mentioning is that CZcams seems to not deal with film grain very well. If CZcams is the main platform you plan on showing your video on, then consider a finer grain or no grain at all.
Is any of your film grains usable for CZcams or wouldn’t you recommend applying it at all?
Hey Thomas, I'd give both the 35 and 16mm grain a try. Just upload as 'unlisted' so you can give it a look over and decide whether to keep the grain or not.
How should I solve color blending in 8 bits if youtube can't deal film grain?
@@aungsupaing5369 unfortunately you just don't have enough color information in your shot if you shot in 8 bit. You'll need to scale back your color grading and not push your colors so much.
@@dylanjohndickerson thank you bro. You help me a lot.
It really does give a different dreamy feeling. That's at least part of the reason Denis Villeneuve shot Dune with the Arri Alexa LF IMAX and then transferred the digital image to 35 mm film and then scanned the film back to digital.
Thanks man, I was always wondering when to use it and I was looking for some good overlays. This is great!
My pleasure brotha! 👊🏼
I always appreciate your tips Dylan! Huge fan.
Thanks so much my dude!!
Wowww ! New studios! Looking great Dylan! And Thanks for answering my biggest wonder these days!
Thanks Sam! 🤗
Amazing info and thank god your straight to the point immediately, subbed!!!
Thanks on both accounts mate! 🤙🏼
I would add 'Underwater' filming to when not to use film grain...pixelation can be an issue with underwater color/depth loss, and lighting issues. Great point about the banding...I'm going to try it since I sometimes notice it in my color grading, although 10bit has helped a little. Thank you
Top man! thanks for explaining!
My pleasure brotha! 👊🏼
I'm in post on my first feature film (SURFACE TENSION) and just experimented with a film grain overlay yesterday. It absolutely helped with imperfections like banding and just added a sense of gravitas to the footage. I have a theory that subconsciously (or maybe consciously) we've stored a lot of positive feelings from all the films / including film grain we've consumed and it's this "visual history" that gets triggered. The result may be technical but it's also hugely emotional is my opinion. It just feels right by including this familiar artifact of analog film making. Love it.
Right? It just feels right. I agree with you that I think we're just conditioned at this point to associate grain with good films. Thanks for the comment Scott!
Same reasoning for why we usually prefer 24fps content when consuming TV and movies. That's why I always shoot stuff in 24fps. I can't stand the look of smoothing effects or higher framerates when I watch stuff on a newer TV because my eyes/mind are just trained to better enjoy the traditional look.
@@natebridge1663 agreed Nate! That’s reminds me of how crappy the Hobbit looked lol. 60fps? You crazy Peter Jackson.
I really hate this argument of “conditioning” vs find the real world reason why it causes an effect.
This “conditioning” argument is nothing more than a rationalization to sweep in under the rug for the lack of better ideas
I completely agree!!!!!
Thanks for the information. Very important!
Glad you found it helpful, Gary 🙏 Thanks for watching and commenting!
I simply cannot watch movies anymore without film grain.... It's one of the things that you can see in the new Matrix movies, it looks too clean, the colours too bright and fibrant as if I was watching a Marvel movie.
I felt the same way about the new Matrix movie. It felt really..digital. No pun intended.
So true!!!
It’s funny how big Hollywood movies shot on clean 4k digital look more like home movies. Meanwhile an actual home movie shot well with film grain looks more cinematic
Depends on the movie. Tbh scifi movies like The Matrix and Tron are the most appropriate to be super digital and grain free because the whole point is that they're digital worlds.
Contagion on the other hand, a film about a viral outbreak, doesn't have much organic bite to it because it's so grain-free. Albeit beautiful, such a sterile image undermines the harshness of such a sick world.
Thanks so much for the overlay! Ill export a 7 minute version myself so then I wont have to paste them 1000 times going forward!
Wow! Great knowlage bro! Thanks!
Glad to hear it brotha! You're welcome!
Thank you so much!
You’re very welcome! ☺️
Nice! Thank you so much Dylan 💜
You're welcome, Abram! Thanks for watching 👊🏼
Love film grain in films! Thanks for your tips! Always helpful!
My pleasure! 🙏
Excellent! 👏
Thanks Ely! 👊
Great easy to watch video. Would bringing 25fps film grain be an issue for 23.976fps footage?
Thanks! I think because the opacity/visibility of the grain will be so low it won't be a problem. The extra frame jitter probably would go unnoticed.
Hey Dylan, is there a major difference between "soft light" and "overlay" blend mode when using a 35 mm grain? Can't say that I trust my monitor to tell me the difference.
Hey Johnny! That's a great question my man and I honestly don't know the answer. I'll test it out when I can and let you know 👌
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
No problem! Thanks for watching!
Is there a good example where I can see a comparison of two videos, where the one is clean and one contains grain. I've never been able to understand "cinematic" vs "home video". They both look fine for me.
great video bro
Thanks for watching brotha!

Hi! I’ve been editing in capcut for a while now and i’ve been trying to use the noise effect on my edits & it looks perfect in the app & in my gallery like no quality problems at all or anything, but the moment I post the edit on social media the noise effect starts becoming very pixelated & very bad quality how come it’s like this & how do I fix this ? :( I love how you also showed the film “old boy” as an example it’s one of my favorites movies
Film grain on social media tends to just blur unfortunately :/ The only way that I know is to get some quality film grain like from the plugin Dehancer and try that out. You can't get that for Capcut though.
@@dylanjohndickerson Oh where can I find that? Is it on some sort of app like after effect/adobe premier?
@@xzthls4613 That's right. It's a plugin.
@@dylanjohndickerson Thank you!
Is there a way to apply film grain on mids and highlights only? So it doesnt give the blacks and shadows that muddy looks esp with social media compression
Yep, pick up the plugin Dehancer. I highly recommend it.
Any advice on avoiding youtube's compression when using film grain
You could try not decreasing the opacity on the film grain so much so it shows up more. I'm not sure at what percentage it'll start to reappear though. I'd upload the video as 'unlisted', let it process, and check it out before making it public.
How come when I make the grain clips into a compound clip, it crops down to only fit like the center 1rd of the screen instead of the entire screen?
Not sure man. Are you using a trial version or cracked version of Final Cut Pro?
@@dylanjohndickerson For absolutely no reason it's working now!! I just closed and reopened the project haha
9:15 You light up my life.
No, you light up my life.
CAN YOU SHOW US HOW TO USE THEM IN IMOVIE PLEASE?
I don't think iMovie allows you to import them. Upgrade to Final Cut Pro! It's way worth it.

You commenting helps with that 👊🏼 thanks Mikha
Wait, so that's intentional?! I assumed there was something wrong with my TV or something.
It's intentional! Your tv is a-okay
@@dylanjohndickerson I wish they wouldn't do that tbh.
@@Poweranimals Some films have less than others. It's all personal preference of those directors/editors.
how do I add it to sony vegas 13?
Just drag them into Sony Vegas or import them!
@@dylanjohndickerson I imported it but no effect appeared on the video :с
@@Labonair. I don’t know too much about Sony Vegas but I’d assume it’s the same thing. Do you see the gray film grain clip when you drop it on the timeline?
@@dylanjohndickerson No, I don't see it, it's just an empty file.
@@Labonair. that’s odd. It should work. I don’t know much about Sony Vegas, but there has to be a way.
Film Why? Grain When? ;P
Cool!! LOVE IT!! SUBSCRIBER +1 eheheh
Niceeeeeee thanks for the love! 😄
Amazing tutorial! Really appreciate it! I have filmmaking related tutorials also. Any support would be awesome! Thanks again
My answer is why not
That's a fair answer. People would say it 'dirties' up the image and isn't possible to even see on most viewable platforms, but at the end of the day, it's your art. Make it how you want it.
How does it work in video games
Lightroom can edit videos too, including adding grain. Use it instead
You can edit short individual clips. Not practical for a full video. I use Dehancer for film grain. It intelligently applies it. Use it instead
@@dylanjohndickerson but I can edit full videos, at least for music video. This way I can color grading the video whatever I wanted. Better than any other app KineMaster good for editing but Lightroom good for coloring and grain. Since I'm on mobile that's the programs I will use.
How to avoid the compression of youtube on the grain
But Lightroom offer a real moving grain that imitate what real grain is, not just overlay like that
Lightroom is a photo application..
@@dylanjohndickerson you can edit video with it too. Do you never try it? Try it now. It's even works on mobile. It's giving real film grain. The only risk to add grain is the file size will be 10x bigger. But it's worth it. Trust me try it now. It's good.
@@dylanjohndickerson It can edit videos too
but in dynamic videos, CZcams will ruin the quality and 4k will looks like 480p... as an example - my last video (I'm not promoting, sorry)
I have to disagree with you there. 4k videos looks great on CZcams when I’m watching them. Of course some quality is lost with CZcams’s compression l, but definitely not 480p quality.
You said we wanna feel immersed into a film and not have it feel like a home video. But film grain literally feels like a layer recorded on a camera 😭😭. I can’t immerse myself knowing there’s a grainy filter over what could have felt like looking into a portal.
I hate film grain in almost all movies and tv shows
I hate grains its terrible I guess I'm use to gaming and 60fps drones
To each his own! I also waiver sometimes on whether I want to add grain or not.
I for one absolutely hate Film Grain. If I could remove it from many of my favorite 90's 2000's movies I would remove it. Personally to me the only thing it does is make the video look old. Hate it, really wish it wasn't there.
Why they add grain 🤦 i hate it
Did you watch the video Ken?
@@dylanjohndickerson no, i just hate it and wanted to comment don't care even if it's for cinematic purposes
I hate film grain it should be removed from every movie if possible, the vibe grain gives is fake we don’t see grain in real life with our eyes so we shouldn’t see it on film.
Holy, it's you again. You want them to lower the image quality and scrub away the detail of nearly every movie ever made because we don't see film grain in real life? Lol, I guess they should colourize every B&W movie, too, right? Get out of here with your nonstop, silly nonsense.
@@Rilumai lol what are you some kind of weird loser that goes around reading peoples comments all day get a life lol (i’m not gonna reply to you anymore you just prove you are social reject haha)
@@michaeldietz2648 Lmao, replying to two comments means I go around all day doing that and have no life? You've responded just as much as I have so I guess you don't have one, too. Man, your logic is supreme, hahaha.
