In this video, I review and demo the Dehancer Pro Film Emulation Plug-in for Final Cut Pro X (FCPX), and show you how to get the cinematic film look of your favorite Hollywood movies. The video explores film stocks like Kodak Vision 3 5219, (a stock often used by DP's like Steve Yedlin), print stocks like Kodak 2383, grain, film compression, halation, film breathing, color timing, and gate weave. This video is a mix of silly entertainment and in-depth filmmaker nerdery. PS. I will not be offended if you watch at 2x speed ;) Make sure you watch in 4K so you can see the details in the demo!
The tool is also available for Adobe After Effects, Premiere, and Davinci Resolve.
If you purchase the Dehancer Plugin for any products, please use the code SCOTT and checkout for a 10% discount. This will also provide me with a 10% commission that will greatly help in supporting this channel and its growth.

Also watch or skip to the end to see how the intro short film concludes itself. ;)
That first sequence is so full of nerdy video editing comedy, and I'm all for it 🤣 well done. That sequence is amazing!
haha it is indeed! Thank you so much!
My favorite part! 😂
That intro was a masterpiece. You standing at the window pondering mortality was perfect.
I think Dehancer is the closest thing we have to accurate film colour, but I’ve found the glass is just as important in achieving the overall look. My canon FD lenses immediately bring a scene up several levels alone. Combine these together and you’ve got a hell of a look.
Thanks so much! Haha. I had fun making it.
For sure. The right Lenses can really take the edge off.
RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!
Dehancer should use this as a technical, best practices video. Very well articulated, and loved the humorous intro!
Appreciate you, bro 🙏 thanks so much for watching and relaying this super kind feedback
The dirt and the grime... that's what made Matt Reeves' The Batman so beautiful.
an intro has never spoke to me more (currently learning how to color grade for the first time and desperately wants a perfect film look)
haha amazing!! best of luck in your pursuit of the film look. Lots of good options now w film emulations too. but I like Dehancer for FCP
I'm blown away with the first sequence you did...absolutely wow!!! Amazing job!
Thank you so much! This means a lot. Truly.
No, it looks cheap a f. Colors are too vivid, angles are cheap a f, etc
Light blob on the background. Jesus Christ. CZcams filmographers 🤦 This is. Really. The lowest level. You not only ha e wasted your resources, you're genuinely thinking that's a great job. It's an anti-job.
Even your thumbnail. Who makes it all red. Beginner's mistake of getting lost in worsening color filters
My advise. 1) Use AI to auto-improve your frame 2) Use Lightroom to make a LUT to have a similar frame 3) Apply this LUT. Good for lives, too
That moment, laying in bed, lost in thought, dreaming of how to color grade that shot or fix the sky. That is the moment that haunt us all,, but it also is the perfect embodiment of this love for movies that goes beyond day to day life and the mundane. You my friend are one of us. The crazy ones.
Ha, love this! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Love seeing these kinds of thoughtful engagements
I accidentally stumbled upon your video months ago which led me into incorporating your advice but on Lightroom, I saved that preset moved on. And, recently I took some street photographs and I applied that colour grade which I made after watching your video, I WAS ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY. My colour grades look so much more rich and deeper now, it's as though I have grown in a span of second however I did not know what video I watched.
ISTG looked through my history I typed all kinds of video title in the hope of finding your video again I didn't. Months pass and now I am here. YOU ARE SUCH A GEM. GOD BLESS YOU. THANK YOUUUUUUU SO MUCH FOR CREATING THESE AMAZING VIDEOS.
Alisha, thanks for sharing this! That's so amazing! Thank you so much for this super kind feedback. I'm glad you were able to find the video and that it was a help to you. That makes me very happy. God bless you as well :)
Is it possible to share that preset?
The intro deserves an Oscar! Great storytelling!
Haha thank you so much 🙏
I have never seen such stunningly designed stories that bring the plot to the topic of the video and at the same time intertwine inside. Incredibly talented and insanely beautiful! Thank you for the inspiration, I wish you cozy frames and suitable emulations!
Too kind! Thank you much for this incredibly thoughtful and encouraging feedback. Cozy frames received haha!
I love the way you composed this and how you color graded is amazing. The narration made it even more captivating. Bro I see your art!
Thank you so much my friend! 🙏🙏
That intro itself really make my eyes glued to the screen! Great video thank you for this!
When it got all dark and you opened that door, I honestly thought I was going to find a CRT that could do darks better, deepening the rabbit hole.
haha
everything about this is incredible. this might be my new favorite filmmaking channel.
Too kind 🙏 thank you so much for saying so. Appreciate you
That opening bit completely sold the rest of the video for me 😂 I'm currently working on a short film for school and have been endlessly looking for a good video that covers just what one does. You've got a good talking voice too, so it wasn’t a chore to sit through the video at all. Keep it up!
So glad to hear! Thanks got the kind words, friend! I had laryngitis when making this, so I'm glad my voice worked out haha. Best of luck on the short film, btw!
This is most beautiful and the funniest intro a technical tutorial video can get.... Actually, this is the only proper one I've ever seen... Lovely work. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this super kind feedback 🙏🙏 it means a lot.
Intro was an immediate subscribe. Showed me exactly what I'm watching for
Thanks so much! And welcome to the channel. I appreciate your subscription
Excellent. Thanks for the review.
Thank you 🙏
Oh man, this was hilarious, informative, and just awesome, overall. Thanks for putting in the extra effort to make this review/tutorial so entertaining. I also appreciate your more measured use of the tool, not going overboard in the way I’ve seen in other CZcamsr’s videos. Definitely planning on buying Dehancer and I’ll be sure to use your promo code. Subscribed!
Really appreciate this 🙏🙏 so glad you liked the video and thank you for your support
I've got to say that I usually don´t really like these little intro sketches that some CZcamsrs do on these kinds of tutorials, but yours was so good! very cinematic, entertaining 😆, and informative in his own way🤔.
Thanks so much! And I'm with you. When done wrong they can be pretty annoying. Glad you dug this
That was a hilarious intro. "Heatbeat louder than footsteps." I'm learning color grading just so I can make cinematics in Unreal Engine 5 look like film, but getting a lot of film videos on my feed. Glad to see this :)
Haha thank you so much! That's awesome. Unreal is super cool. Wish I had time to learn some of it. Maybe one day
What a great video! Love the style, the look, the writing... I look forward to watching more of your videos!
Thank you, friend 🙏🙏
The introduction is very captivating and announces the quality one can expect. Great video overall.
Thank you, friend 🙏
This guy!, He made the most relatable, most creative, the most nerdy intro and then, talks about dehancer.. and instead of saying "this is the best tool for film simulation and dehancer will give you 10% off it you use my link below", He says "behancer reached me and asked to make a video and they accepted to pay me 10% for each purchase.. buy this if you are interested" in a very genuine, humble, pleasing manners and... Professionally explains me how to get the film look and.. Genuinely reviews dehancer and... This guy likes all his comments and replies to all of them and he's doing CZcams for a long time and has just 15k ish subscribers!!!! We must save this guy!.. He's the GOLD of CZcams and we must save him at all cost!!!!
Easily the most wholesome guy I've seen in CZcams❤️
Haha, I love this! Thanks so much for this thoughtful, and kind comment 🙏❤️. So glad you're enjoying my channel
Keeping it noted. Amazing indepth detailing
Thank you so much!
Bro, Scott this video (and ima CZcams snob but a really nice guy) this video is amazing. I liked and subscribed before the 5 minute mark all notifications on. Bruh phenomenal stoked to see the rest of your content and the upcoming new ❤☝️🤙 your aesthetic awareness is absolutely on another level.
Much appreciated, friend 🙏 thanks for subbing and the kind words. Hope you enjoy what's to come, and welcome to the channel 👊🙏
Man, that’s the best intro to a video I’ve seen hahah! Brilliant work dude. New subscriber ✌🏻
Thank you, Jon🙏 appreciate your sub. Welcome to the channel
If I knew you in real life, I would probably be madly in love with you just for your story telling humour and talent in detail. The intro is just so original and made me laugh but with a little bit of suspense and mystery. It's like a new genre of telling a joke.
Thank you so much 😊🙏🙏 I'm glad my weird sense of humor and tone came through, haha. Appreciate the kind words.
Great job! I really enjoyed that, especially the narrative intro and outro. 💯🎬
Thank you so much 🙏🙏
The short sequence is incredible 👏
this is awesome! I love all of the examples you give and applicable movies. Best dehancer review I have seen yet!
also I never thought about what "Dehancer" meant, but now it makes so much sense haha
Thank you so much for this incredibly kind feedback :) 🙏☺️🙏
What a delightful intro sequence to the "how to" portion of the video. Saved this tutorial for future reference. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words, and I appreciate you saving this video for future viewing :)
Stumbled upon this video and jeez, this is freaking good on so many levels! Subscribed immediately!
Thank you so much, friend! And thank you for your subscription. Welcome to the channel
I cant stop crying! The comedy in this is hilarious! I subbed off of the narration! Excellent intro!!!
haha incredible! thank you! thanks for the sub, and thanks for watching. welcome to the channel
This was too funny! The intro was so engaging I loved it. Sent it to all my film buddies lol!
haha thank you so much! And thanks for passing it along
Been using Dehancer for a couple years now and it's hands down the most accurate and complete film emulation out there. Still learned a few new tips in here, so thank you! Great breakdown!
Thanks, Lorenz! Yeah, Davinci is super powerful, but dehancer makes life a lot easier for certain aspects of emulation. It's really nice. Appreciate the kind words!
Best vid I’ve watched in a while just for entertainment value alone. And it brought some theory. Love it.
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed it and got some value out of it 🙏🙏
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST VIDEOS I'VE EVER SEEN
Thank you so much, Amanda! Means a lot
One of the best reviews ever!! Super entertaining and excellent real world tutorial all wrapped into one! Betting your neighbors loved the scream at the end....LOL!!
Thank you so much! So glad to hear. Lol. Had to dub the scream in my closet. But no doubt my neighbors thought I was a total loony lying under each tree 😆. Also kudos for watching til the end! I think you're the first person to reference the scream. My favorite part haha
LOL!!! In all seriousness - just bought Dehancer and your video has been EXTREMELY helpful (especially as a FCPX user - trying to eventually make the Davinci switch - but I know FCPX soooo well.....). I've been a fan of Final Convert for a while - but already enjoying the results I get 0ut of Dehancer Pro even more so thanks again!!!@@ScottJeschke
wow, jaw has dropped, flabber has gasted, you couldn't put together a better showcase, Dehancer owe you more than free product. Bravo sir!
Thank you so much, Jonathan! Really appreciate the kind words.
Dude, great review of the plugin! Keep going!
Thank you so much!
Impressive and informative review. Truly inspiring work Mr. Scott!
Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏 so glad it connected
What an intro! 😁Got me hooked till the very end. Well done
Thanks, Neil!
Haven't even gotten through the opening sequence. Beautiful and funny. Liked and subscribed! Looking forward to going through your channel. Thank you!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate this comment and appreciate having you come on board as a subscriber! Hope you enjoy the channel.
Thank you for this video , I’ve been on the fence about buying this but I think you have convinced me , will use your code ! I’m also using Final Cut Pro , and you’re the first video I’ve found that uses the dehancer / Final Cut combo
Thanks so much for your support! Yeah, having this in FCPX is the sell for me. Much of it can be done custom in Resolve, but thats a whole extra piece of a pipeline that sometimes just isn't convenient
that last sequence where you were talking to yourself was hilarious and awkward. love it. thanks for the tutorial!
Haha sure thing! Thanks for watching to the end. Everyone loves the into, but my favorite part is the epilogue 😂
Wonderful. Very informative. ... and I loved the intro/outro :)
Thanks so much 🙏
This just popped up in my rec feed! So good! Really enjoyed that intro! 😎😎😎
Thanks so much, Nick!
Spent way too much time on it haha
@@ScottJeschke Worth it! 😀
This is simply THE BEST product review I have ever watched.
Wow! Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏👊
Excellent video Scott, I truly enjoyed the intro! I'm also completely obsessed with authentic film emulations, and have been for years! As for halations, if you watch older movies from the 80's, 90's and 2000.. most of them are shot on 35mm film and some show really strong opaque red halations (at the point where it's really distracting and can't miss it), while some others show subtle orange translucide edges only. There are some technicals reasons for that, but since we're not shooting on actual film but just emulating the look.. the strenght of the halation becomes an artistic choice base on preference. I agree that a lot of people simply go too strong for no reason though. I love Dehancer and it has completely changed the game, but personnally, I use it in conjunction with Emotive Color (Arri LogC) and Juan Melara's FilmUnlimited powergrades. The only Dehancer modules that i'm currently using is the Bloom and Film Grain. I always struggled with Dehancer's colors.. I tried a lot of time with different footage from different cameras, and I can get some nice looks, but I still prefer the color separation I get from FilmUnlimited, where skintones are always 100% spot on.
The only thing I really don't understand with Dehancer is the film grain size slider. Dehancer say that it goes from 65mm down to 8mm (and even 4mm), although the only way that i can get the true 35mm look (e.g. True Blood, Harry Potter, Scream, Terminator 2, etc) is by setting the size slider all the way up to 12, setting it to Positive, and use the Amount slider to set the intensity. Everybody says 35mm has really fine grain, but I don't get it since it appears quite big to me. I have tons of stills and video references from Blurays (movies shot on 35mm film), and none of them have really fine grain like that. They all shows quite agressive grain texture. I also own some authentic 4K film grain scans from CineGrain (which i'm not using anymore because Dehancer integrates it the ''right'' way), and when I look at the 35mm scans, grain is a lot bigger than what Dehancer recommend for 35mm emulation (matching what I see in movies shot on 35mm film). When I look at 8mm film scans (and also actual 8mm film), it's like 10x bigger than Dehancer with the size slider all the way up to 12. I'm not saying they're lying, not at all.. there's probably something I don't understand... but clearly, now that i'm using it that way, it's shockingly realistic to the point where it looks like it's part from the same movie (when comparing back to back with actual 35mm movies). Texture is now identical. Another thing to consider is if you want the clipped look with very agressive grain around the highlights with sudden clipping where grain disappear completely (like in True Blood, or Scream for instance), or if you want the ''Harry Potter'' film look, where the grain distribution from shadows to highlights is set like Dehancer's default settings (smoothly disappears in the highlights). I personnally like both looks. I know the look with agressive grain in the highlights and hard clipping isn't part of the negative, and have something to do with the transfer process they was using at the time... but I managed to recreate it perfectly as well!
Anyways, if you're interested in chatting and sharing stuff about film emulations, I'd really like that! It's hard to find people with that much passion for things like that!
Love this! Sorry for the delayed reply. Gonna revisit this to give a more more thorough reply
Love this. I relate - seeing even professionally shot digital films just have a clinical “amateur” looks whereas the filmgrain and textures give it a rich depth and feel more like cinema
Thanks, Ben! Yeah, for me I love the rich color density of film
The intro narration gave me Nick Carraway vibes from The Great Gastby! So good!!
This was a great video Scott! Well done!
Thanks so much, Stefano! Really appreciate it 🙏🙏
Dude that was an epic intro. You earned a sub for your storytelling
Thank ya kindly! And thanks for the sub. Welcome to the channel. Hope you enjoy the other videos!
Great review, Scott!

Thanks so much! Appreciate you guys being available for assistance!
On the iphone version of dehancer, it would be nice to export to prores to keep the grain intact.
@@webinatic216thank you for the suggestion, we have it in plans!
'great' review? this is one of the best reviews ever made. Give this man a crown and a paycheck! @dehancer

Absolute masterpiece of a video. This was beautiful
Thank you so much 🙏 Appreciate you stopping by 😊
The production value is too great, I have to like and subscribe.
Really good video, thanx for uploading!
Great intro. And the obsessive nature of scrutinising even the smallest aspects of analogue media I can totally relate to! 😂
The intro is outstandingly brilliant. Two thumbs up from Kingsport, Tennessee!

Seriously dude, that intro is a cinematic masterpiece. I couldn't even get four minutes before I was summoned by the gods to comment.👋
Haha thank you so much! Appreciate the love 🙏🙏👊
@@ScottJeschke I work in Premiere but wanted to go as far as I could with the storyline. The writing was fantastic. Like a sale pitch for a product not available in your country of residence.
@@charlieteljeur5391 really appreciate this, Charlie. 🙏 They do have Dehancer for Premiere by the way. I think it's exactly the same, with maybe some UI differences. I just did FCPX because the resolve version was well covered already.
@@ScottJeschke Thanks Scott. Really appreciate this. You got my sub!
Terrific production mate. Might get the tool someday but I'm still focusing on regular colougrading atm. This got me excited to continue on this journey! Thank you 😊

very very impressive opening to a video - your hard work definitely paid off
Thank you so much! 🙏🙏 really appreciate the kind words
That was a very creative intro! got me locked in, loved it
Thanks so much, Alexa! Really appreciate you saying so!

Thanks so much! Haha, love that movie. Def might have seeped in. Harpsichord for the win!
This channel is underrated 😂 that intro was so good I forgot I was watching a tutorial
Thank you so much! Appreciate you giving it a watch
The intro is spectacular. Get this man an OSCAR
Whoever said bald men aren't sexy clearly hasn't seen your channel! You, my friend, are bringing sexy back. And by the way, I came for the tutorial but was completely captivated by the short film intro. I hit the subscribe button right away, even before diving into the tutorial. Exceptional work!

Thanks for watching and commenting! Appreciate the kind words 🙏
That was such a beautiful intro. I will be using this with my og BMPCC.
Thanks so much! Such a great camera. Lots of people going back to it in the past few years
Nice video. So it's basically a very advanced LUT that has tons of parameters that you can tweak. Looks good.
Kind of.. with spatial elements as well though. ie. grain, halation, weave etc
Haha, the intro is just so on point! Real unexplainable feeling
Thank you! haha
What a damm awesome video for the love of god.... The intro is pure GOLD!!!!!
Haha thank you so much 🙌 I really appreciate it :)
That‘s an amazing Intro!!!! Love Dehancer too
Thanks so much 🙏🙏
Amazing video. I was hooked!
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed it!
This was an epic video and I applaud you for the effort. I've tried Dehancer, as well as many other emulation tools, but I'm still just not happy. So, went out and bought a 16mm film camera! Can't afford 35mm at the moment but at least now I can shoot my short films on real film and know this might sound overkill but to me it saves a ton of wasted time and energy.
Thank you! Also, that's awesome! Keep me posted on how it goes. Love the look of 16. Hope to shoot on it at some point
awesome. Havent shot 16mm since college (90s).
Its beautiful. Even when lit in an average or even poor manner, film has a beauty digital doesnt. Digital has its own advantages
Wow man. Great stuff. I laughed a lot from your monologues. It hits hard but true. I'm a new subcr.
