  • Making and testing a debris collar that prevents crud from boogering up the lock button. Works great now.

It looks like you came up with a first round fix for the issue. My guess is you will put it to use and make sure it continues work correctly and then maybe reach out to AVE and share it with him. He reminds me of a guy I used to work with. He was a road mechanic with many years of experience under his belt. I think he learned everything he could from his peers growing up, and I think he is extremely intelligent and can look at things in different ways and that allowed him to fix or get stuff up and working untill replacement parts were available. In many cases he was able to make tweaks to stuff and make it more reliable and more efficient. I learned more from him then anyone else. He was the type of guy that if I was in a bind and asked him for his thoughts, 99% of the time he could steer me in the right direction and he never made me feel bad while doing it. He was a priceless co-worker and person.

You know what, this is exactly what's pissing me off most with this world right now.
It doesn't seem to matter what I buy, how much I spend, or where it came from; I buy something, get it home, and before you know it, I have to Macgyver the damn thing in order to get it to do what it's supposed to do properly.
$100 box for a box cutter, and it's just one more GD time bandit on my bench.
I'll probably just put it in a glass case in my display/curio cabinet and celebrate the fact that it came from Ave.
Sorry Ave, this thing sucks, it may be skookum, but it ain't got the chooch I was hoping for!
And where the hell is the spring clip? This thing is way too large and heavy to be bouncing around in my pocket so close to the family jewels and all.

The issue with this I could see is if you switch blade brands and the next brand is thicker.

Very possible, I've gotten a few questions about blades, so I'm already in the process of making a blade comparison video. Ordered over 15 brands of blades, just finished making a sharpness tester, just waiting on a new scale and one more set of blades to start... We shall see! If ya got any suggestions please let me know, I'm planning on testing sharpness, edge retention, blade thickness, force required to snap off the blade segments, vs cost... Kinda like a project farm video.

I've been thinking about doing something like this to my knife as well. Your video popped up in my feed this morning and it's almost exactly what i was going to do, Or just machine a new button that doesn't need a shield/sleeve. I'm also a beginner/hobbyist to machine work and stainless can be very difficult. I may do aluminum first. How has this held up since you completed it? Have you carried it while working and had it still function?

Also cool videos so far, subbed.

So far it's been holding up great, I've been carrying in the side pocket of duluth work pants. But to be honest I've been taking it easy since this video due to hernia surgery. I'll be making an update video soon, hopefully with a ss debris collar mark 1... lol ya got me thinking about a new button though. I'll see what come up with.

Sounds great, good job its harder wearing SS. I'm sure its not covered by the lifetime warranty to use it with sand 🙂

Off Topic, but you all know better than me: What are your preferred brands/types of the 1" replaceable blades?
    Thanks a lot!

I've only used three brands so far, olfa, dewalt and some master something brand from manards. I'm kinda partial to the olfa but to be fair I don't really have any particular reason other than it's made in Japan, they tend to make high quality products. I've been there many times and it reminds me of the USA 50 years ago. Smoking, baseball and pride... I'll look into making a comparison video of the different brands.

@@twosawacres8096 Thanks for the educational reply for me - I love Japanese products for their quality control, and they completely reversed the stigma of "Made in Japan"
