I have 3 kayaks and an outboard-powered inflatable. Easy boating without a lot of expense. My parents had a 40' power boat (tri-cabin cruiser). My Dad's line: "You steer with one hand and write checks with the other>"

All of the problems that can happen, and aggravations and financial loss that is probable….. all that aside my family could not imagine life without a boat now.
We bought the first one smaller/older/cheaper to see if we liked the lifestyle. We quickly bought a bigger/newer/more expensive boat. We learned some hard lessons along the way. Once in a blue moon I consider selling because we do not use as much with life getting busier, but everytime we go out on it and have an enjoyable experience, those thoughts quickly float away (pun intended)

Some folks invest in drugs. Others crime. Why not a boat? Like the above it’s a bad choice but damn it’s fun.

Yes I REGRET buying my boat every time I put fuel in her and spend two grand, but I can’t take my money with me when I die and the smiles on the grandchildren faces are priceless 😁 Thinking of taking my kid and wife and grandchildren fishing to the Perdido oil rig for a week trip of fishing 🐟

Thank you for sharing this conversation and reality check for new comers to boating! I have seen so many “cov**” buyers end up stranded, needing assistance with maintenance, and complaining about the cost. True boaters know owning a boat is part of their life and understand it is an investment for them and their family. Same as buying a home…you need to budget maintenance cost! A key requirement when we bought a boat (my wife and I grew up on boats) was that both our children took boater education courses, implement their training when we are on the water (proper terminology/properly secure a fender/execute commands from the vessel operator/etc.), and learn what it takes to own a boat. All, including guests, are required to follow operator commands, assist when underway, assist with loading on our lift upon return, assist with cleaning exterior and interior, and most importantly….have SAFE fun! I enjoy taking friends out tubing, lunch on the water, and coving out. That said, there is no drinking alcohol allowed on our vessel while doing water activities and an experience operator must remain sober to ensure safe return to our slip! Generally we do water sports in the morning and the afternoon is time on the hook to relax with friends/family!

Great video! I almost pulled the trigger on a new $65k boat but then I got scared and backed off the idea because I never drove a boat, I don't have a boating license, I know I get get that easily, and I was afraid that I was going to sink the boat if I forgot to put the drain plug in, or catch the prop on a rock, or get into shallow water, etc.... So I decide to forget the idea for now but I almost bought a used boat last weekend because it was a 1997 Cris Craft that was only $11k. I felt that this was the best path for me for my first boat, but I still helped off and I think I am going to push this decision off until I retire and have more time so in the mean time, I will continue to use my Hobie PA14 kayak and add a motor on it (Newport Vessel NK180 PRO) and upgrade my sonar and that should help me get through these next few years before I take the big plunge. I feel like not getting a boat now is the right decision and your video confirms that.

We bought a friend’s old Tige in 2021 as our first boat and trailered it ourselves. Just traded the boat and trailer for a new Bennington tritoon and leased a slip so it’s ready to go. Very happy with the upgrades but glad we had our starter boat to learn and confirm it was a good hobby for us.

Great video as usual. We just lost 10,000 selling our wrong front pontoon boat. Which was a 2023 Qwest 820 lanai with 90 Yamaha sho. After three summers it was time to buy the right last boat. Sold our qwest to sweetest older couple that we call friends now. A week later we purchased a 2024 SunChaser Geneva 23 SBDH tritoon with a mercury 150 and couldn’t be happier. Watched a lot of your videos thank you again with helping us find the right boat.

Yes had a boat for lake fishing when I lived in Oregon. I am now in central Florida by the gulf coast am looking at buying a pontoon boat for some in shore close to shore saltwater fishing. I loved by smokercraft almunium boat. But now that I am older would like something with more deck space that I can take more people on and have portipottie on. Lol. Bladder isn’t as good as it used to be.

Look at the Princecraft lineup. They may have a deck layout for you.

Ronturner, I know absolutely nothing about boats. Have never owned one. I also live on the Gulf Coast and would like something with deck space and a porta potti. I have been looking at the Hurricane Fundeck line. Pontoon deck with a canvas pop-up changing room/porta potti room at the stern, with a fiberglass hull. Worth looking at in my opinion.

Naw, I like my boat. It’s a beautiful tritoon. We use it 20+ times a year. It’s got it own covered 40” long covered parking in my back pasture. I would’ve paid more for a rental given the frequency of use.

If you invest in your skills, knowledge and abilities owning a boat will be far easier and cheaper. Invest in yourself first then things that can bury you financially. The poor choice matrix is remedied by time.

  • @jrhunt414
    @jrhunt414 Před 28 dny +2

It’s not that people shouldn’t buy a boat. They just should buy a different cheaper boat. I have two boats. A 12’ StarCraft with a 5hp 4stroke and an 18’ v front welded Jon boat with a 9.8 two stroke. I can afford both. Gas is cheap, boats and motors were cheap, no payment, no insurance. Motors and tanks can come off and go in the shed. Seats are replaced cheap. No electronics. It keeps boating fun and stress free. I honestly couldn’t imagine having a boat with a payment and insurance and fueling up with $300 of fuel for a weekend. There’s boats for everyone at any budget. Buy the boat you can afford and enjoy it.

2 min into this video and I had to comment!
Whoever tells people boating is cheap, is flat out lieing!
Boat has never been, and will never be a poor man’s hobby! If you do not have disposable income available, boating certainly will not be a pleasure for you.
The key to boat ownership is learn basic mechanical skills to diy and save money, or have tons of money set aside and be ok with down time for someone else to fix it
