Mm2 really missed the boat with all the other Mario styles including smb2 and customizing enemies and power ups and stuff. Just because it’s unique and the only style where you can just pick things up doesn’t mean you can’t customize it like this.

I doubt it, despite the game being still in development, that's not the main reason to be closed. According to the devs, its to "maintain the community healthy". And they do not plan to open it to the public (maybe in some years)
It never will be public. One hour after it's available they'll get a cease and desist letter from Nintendo's lawyers. Then their choice will be close the game immediately or go to court for copyright infringement and owe Nintendo $15 million.
