The studio version DOES rely on effects and multitracking. She just manages to mimic all that with her single voice alone which is amazing and ends up sounding more dramatic.
"improve their singing". Her singing can't be improved. I'm sorry comrade you are now on a list for un-Regina thought :) It's not a big list and it doesn't have many effects, but I'm warning you right now, if Regina ever becomes world president..... expect the odd sideways glance!
@FallNorth I love a lot of styles of music, some I çonsider artists.. she is so damn good.I love beck and Jenny lewis, but Regina is on control of piano, and her voice with the lyrics she wrote, live on stage. She is a goddess of music to the keen ear.
She is singing the first stanza of a poem by Boris Pasternak, a Nobel Prize winner from Russia. An approximate translation would be: February. Get ink, shed tears. Write of it, sob your heart out, sing, While torrential slush that roars Burns in the blackness of the spring. And, if you're wondering, Apres Moi le deluge is, as said in the song, After me, the flood. It is believed to be said by King Louis XV when he died referring to the French Revolution that happens later in history.
Well, she's a pretty good ambassador of Rushian culture with this piece taken from Pasternak's poem which she smuggled into this beautiful song. I speak both Russian and English as foreign languages so I have some distance. And I must say listening to her singing in Russian takes it to the whole new dimention. Ever since I heard this song for the first time I've been hoping she would record something more in her beautiful native language which suits her vocal style so well. Not losing my hope.
Here I am 17 years after this some came out and 13 years after you commented this- still waiting for Regina to sing in Russian cause it gives me goosebumps
i feel so blessed right now to be alive and beeing able to watch this performance and listen to this heavenly pure sound. i am crying. thank you Regina! your music makes me feel things i never felt before.
HOW CAN A HUMAN CREATURE have such a voice, sing like that? She sings with the easyness and perfect control as a fish in the water. I only felt amazed like this with Janis Joplin, many years ago. Lucky me I knew her by the internet, and now am one of the privilegioused ones who can enjoy her music. Go ahead, Regina! (my aunt's name)
The Russian part from Boris Pasternak (written in 1912) Black spring! Pick up your pen, and weeping, Of February, in sobs and ink, Write poems, while the slush in thunder Is burning in the black of spring
Amazing, her Russian has no any American accent. Like at all, not a bit. Its pure Russian. And a song is great of cause, and she is very special, no doubt.
Feben H I know she is from Russia, but there r plenty Americans born in Russia and if they moved to USA in childhood (like in her case) they all have at least slight American accent when they talk Russian.
***** Might me due to singing. I know I often listen to musicians who are European or South America and I have no idea because their accent sounds American or British in song. Sondre Lechre and Mano Nerga come to mind.
I truly love that Posternak’s lyrics in the middle of the song. Beautiful song, powerful russian lyrics, made at the time, when the mastership of poetry was flourishing.
I know what you mean, but I would disagree, its isnt because she is not popular with everyone that we love her so much, its just that her type of music, more reflective, artistic and thoughtful, does not appeal to the larger crowd of music listeners, and we appreciate the greater amount of attention required to enjoy this music. This makes her less popular, but being less popular doesnt make her more enjoyable.
I only discovered Regina through CZcams quite recently and have listened to nothing else since. What I like is that all the comments on all the songs are from people who love her as much as I do.
I discovered Regina last Sunday on 1st Russian Channel where her music was used in a performance on figure skating. I felt in love with this music from the very first time. Most I like part where she sings in Russian because it's my native. :-) Regina has perfect Russian! :-)
Never know she knows Russian oO She speaks it so clear even without an accent. Maybe just a little little bit! As Russian I started to love her much more than I did before)
its like you cant not listen to the full song because you'll miss the unique&random greatness..hearing her music for the first time, you can't assume how a second verse will be..or how it will end..if all of Regina's songs were each a movie, viewers eyes' would be glued to the screen anticipating how it ends..never predictable.inspiring :)
She lived in Russia until she was 8, so I reckon that she knows Russian pretty good. And I did wish I spoke Russian, it sounds like such a cool language!
@guildr08 It is Russian. First iambs of Pasternak's poem: February Фев-[раль]. February. Take ink and weep, write February as you’re sobbing, while black Spring burns deep through the slush and throbbing.
this song gives me goosebumps, especially the Russian part which is very poetic
Same. Every time. And I'm Russian )))
Love the way she replied the fan who shouted "i love you"
I always tell people that my favourite singer is Regina Spektor, but hardly anybody in Malaysia has heard of her.
Another black spring in February, may peace prevail 🇺🇦
She sounds just the same as she does in her Album. I truly respect singers who don't use studio effects to improve their singing.
Right!
exactly. After listening to the studio records I wanted to check how worse the concert version is. Zero difference!
The studio version DOES rely on effects and multitracking. She just manages to mimic all that with her single voice alone which is amazing and ends up sounding more dramatic.

The most amazing part of this song is always when she breaks into Russian...it's powerful everytime.

She lived from 9 years in America.
+Lex Bor Her American accent has a subtle East European twang. Very fetching. She must have spoken Russian to her parents growing up.
she needs to do more russian stuff, this is absolute genius.
I truly love that Posternak’s lyrics in the middle of the song. Beautiful song, powerful russian lyrics, made at the time, when the mastership of poetry was flourishing.
Shocked! Pasternak's February in such a context! Marvellous! Me sobbing!
Every time I think Regina Spektor has blown me totally away with a live performance, she tops it.
Oh that smile on 0:14
she's a genius, and she plays the piano with her eyes closed!
Her weirdness is the first sign, that she is talented )))))
ohh man i get the chills during this whole song.
her russian roots are showing.....wow... what a talent
love the part when she sings in Russian... makes me remember how beautiful our language is.
This woman is one of the most wonderful things to hit this planet in a long time!!

she always looks like shes gonna explode from happiness, its the sweest thing ever. she is too talented
I don''t understrand how she did not become more popular. That whole record was a total masterpiece.
Her Russian makes me melt 😍
she makes me see the potential of humanity more and more. A beautiful spirit with such clarity.

Wait, oh shi~
+Anna Ivanova da da, Boris Pasternak
I don't understand taka Putin taka
I saw her show last night in LA and she was super amazing!
