We go to our Botanical Garden several times a year. All I kept thinking about is how do they not have any critters & vermin eating the plants like moles & voles. So I asked them and the volunteer gardeners all hold up the wire cages you demonstrated in the video. They said that’s the ONLY thing that keeps the plants thriving. You did good young man. I recommend anyone wanting to plant and experience an issue, visit a botanical garden. It’s worth the price of the ticket to get expert advice and with a smile and appreciation they happily give it.
Voles got through the 1/2' holes in hardware cloth I used. It takes 1/4" holes to deter voles.
I am going to try it ...thanks
Thanks - great video-
that's awesome! so do the plants still grow fine and get big and not bothered by the gofers?
This is SO good to know
Thanks a lot
Hi,Nice job, you have a nice garden. Thanks for your ideas,
Just for who need SEBOSS hardware cloth,1/2,1/4 opening ,19 GA, Hot dip galvanized after welding, double galvanized, strong and sturdy, delicate and beautiful, suitable as gopher wire, protect lawn/garden from all kinds of gophers.
Very helpful
+Paul Freeman It has really, really helped with our burrowing critters, and now, some plants have been in cages for 4 and 5 years, and they don't seem to mind and can be lifted for dividing pretty easily...
Holly's Folly - A Garden The voles have caused hundreds of dollars damage - they seem to love crocuses especially. Cages seems to be the way to go.
Paul Freeman I feel for you, believe me, I do. We have the double whammy of voles AND moles. Bulbs in cages are great though. You'll never dig through a clump accidentally again and when you decide to thin/divide them, the cage pops out, and there are all your bulbs, ready to be planted on. :)
I can see how much help this would supply for the main plant. Do you any ideas about how I might keep the voles from tunneling up and eating squash, watermelon, etc. as it vines along ontop of the ground? Any ideas would be appreciated.
Don't know if you still need help Mary Ann. You should consider getting your food off the ground and onto a trellis, then apply netting when fruits ripen. Also when digging out a grow bed put hardware cloth down before adding soil to protect from underneath. Otherwise if these are not options for you then unfortunately you will have to kill them, I recommend the very efficient GopherHawk.
I am also trying to trap what I can, but it is very difficult to catch even one.
Ain't that the truth? The hubby had hand killed a few, just gotten lucky and had a tool in hand when he saw the earth move. But we bought a live trap and a spring trap, too, and had no luck with either. We did not try an apple bucket trap though - might look into that and give it a go.
Got to farm supply and get a hog tie tool and barbs.
I have a big problem with voles. I tried everything. This would work but is too pricy in my opinion. I am making rasied beds for next year and I will dig a foot and a half below the ground and install fabric.
+sonastainbrook We lost more than $40 worth of plants to voles and moles our first year gardening. The 2 years after that, we lost probably $300 more. And we don't have small beds, we'd be covering our Yard if we tried to do it the way you say.A roll of this wire fabric costs about $20. We can protect 10-20 plants with that. Ad to this day, we've lost 1 plant to voles since we started caging the plants. So we don't think it too pricey. Pricey is loosing all your costly plants to voles and moles. Pricey is buying chemicals or bombs every couple of months to try to keep them away. The Brits have a saying that I think fits here:A Penny for the plant, a pound for the hole.
Update on my landscape fabric. After 1st day watering my raised bed, I found Vole tunnels! I dug down 18 inches all around my 4x8 bed and it did not work. I felt so defeated yesterday. After doing much research, I ordered 1/2 inch 4ft wire mesh cloth that I am going to hard staple every two inches to the bottom of my beds. For the cost of less the 9 .00 per bed, I will finally hope for victory over those creatures from hell. Thanks for this video! I will keep you posted on my results.
sonastainbrook Sorry that happened. I think you will find the metal fence fabric to be much more effective.
Thanks for the reply. It is being delivered tomorrow.
Just curious - have you tried doing the root cages like we demonstrated and if so, have you had luck with it?
