More specifically, it's code for "we're releasing it in early access at full price so we can save money by canceling content if it flops."

Ironically, this is why I can't get into live service games. People aren't interested in a game if they're going to cut support and so player numbers are low so the devs cut support.
It really shouldn't have been a live service in the first place. It should've been a one and done game.

The reviews are mostly positive on steam because they deleted THOUSANDS of negative reviews from everyone who played and hated it and refunded it.
Everyone else who didnt buy it knows its trash and isnt going to buy trash to just leave a review on it.

I'm not even that huge of a Joker fan, but they literally took the one character whose entire thing is being a sporadic agent of chaos thats impossible to keep down, and put him on a leash. If there's anything Joker hates, it's people having some any form of control. That's the entire reason he's never been an official part of the Suicide Squad. It completely goes against everything people love about the character.
Edit: For those saying it's an alternate version, that doesn't change the fact that it's a complete misrepresentation of what the character is supposed to stand for. It's still Joker at the end of the day. When you make an alternate version, you still need to keep some traits of the original if you want people to accept it's meant to be someone they're familiar with.
But people like the joker so money!

Note that there's only been about 3k 'reviews' since just after launch. They've been removing negative reviews, if you look. there are positive reviews with negative notes that are tying to warn people about the game. People have to resort to giving false positives to try to inform people

Not sure how Steam reviews work but it's common to delete "troll" reviews.
Basically if there's a mass amount of negative reviews on a movie or game sometimes they claim its inauthentic trolling and delete them.
On the surface that sounds OK, sometimes stuff does get mass trolled in a disingenuous way.
But in reality it's just them going through deleting negative reviews so 🤷.
Not sure if that happens on Steam though. If not I assume it's positive because only the people who like those kinds of games bought it. As in, not very many. But they liked it enough apparently.

Eh, mostly positive is Steam's version of a 6/10.
When looking past the controversies and microtransactions the game at the end of the day is another Destiny/The Division clone. The game is mid but it's a genre that has its niche fans, and lo and behold, you do have those Destiny types that do, in fact, defend the game.
It's like how MMO's as a genre will get you stink eyes by tons of people but has a massive following and its grindy and skinner box nature makes it that if you like one trash MMO you've gotten a taste of all of it.

You know the really offensive thing about the entire ordeal is they had the nerve to charge ten bucks just so that way you could hear one of the worst Joker performances ever. To call the vast majority of his dialogue witless and cringe would be an understatement, it’s borderline unbearable.
You literally have free will. You choose what you do and don't spend your money on. No one's forcing anyone to do anything.

It's a bold choice to bring in the Joker and they decide to go with something invoking the Jared Leto version instead of...ANYTHING else.
It’s like making an avatar game that’s way too reminiscent of the movie.
That thing did not "fall short" it practically nosed dived off a cliff with no harness into oblivion.
I remember when this game was first announced and it was very positive.
Then it leaked that it was going to be a live service game.
Then the screenshots leaked showing microtransactions and it being a looter shooter.
Then the gameplay was shown and and the terrible, cluttered UI.
And it just keeps going down further into that hole of failure.
These are the types of games with exaggerated budgets that rely on the small community of huge fans that spread their wallet for this kind of fraudulent content.

The problem here is the base player base is already small so the whale size has to be even smaller and certainly not enough to cover Rocksteady salaries (in a cost vs earnings sense).

Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure are my favorite duology in all of JRPGs and for me, the best character in it is Arios MacLaine. I waited for so long to hear how he’d sound in an english dub and when Reverie came out, I was smiling from ear to ear. His voice was EVERYTHING I wanted from such an amazing character. Then Suicide Squad came out and in my search for coverage of it I found this channel. How you’ve managed to become one of my go-to game news sources and voiced one of my favorite characters in one of my favorite games I can’t even understand, but I just wanted to say thanks. New time subscriber but I’ll be here for a while.
This is one of those times where I take no joy in saying I frickin told you so. “You” being anyone that bought this game. The writing was on the wall in big bold red letters man. Literally 1 minute in to the first gameplay trailer they ever showed and I knew immediately what was going to happen.
It’s really such a shame. Same exact game with more meaningful combat, character progression, and boss battles, and this could have been something.
I was tired of The Joker way back, in the Arkham games. He was always the final villain that Batman has to beat. So if this season is just "you can play as The Joker" then no, thank you.

In Rocksteady's Defense they probably need 7 years to make a quality Season.

This is what the term “freemium” was created for. An aspect of gameplay that is “free” through the act of grinding for it, but can also be acquired directly and immediately through paying money - in what studios would typically describe as the “premium option” in a free-to-play title.
Don’t ever let yourself be tricked whenever a big corporation labels an update as free. There is a difference between content patches and updates that are truly free, and things that are a freemium deal.
I will say the one exception to this in the past year was the Valhalla expansion in god if war ragnarok, that felt like a love letter to the fans of the series

Asking "what went fron behind the scenes" is a question that has a very obvious answer. Warner bros wanted a live service and forced a singleplayer only studio to make it. Much like Avengers they took teams that has no business being anywhere near these games and forced them to do it

Helldivers 2 is an obvious and great example of live service done right but I'll shout out Honkai Star Rail with it's 2.0 updates really being a hit among its players.

So what were people expecting?
This game wasn't made by the same team as the Arkham games. Rocksteady's OG developers jumped ship when they were being pressured by WB Games to make this game and to make it a live service. So you got a new team of developers (probably many fresh out of school) and a monster legacy and expectations to follow. Add in a woefully under talented writing team "assisted" by activist company Sweet Baby Inc. and you get this end result. A game that lost tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of dollars.
