@@LuLu-nw6bi Iâd say heâs at least a contender. To pull off insane volleys as consistently as he did in an era that rewarded baseline play canât be ignored. Not to mention he had to deal with a higher pace of shot than the previous volley legends of the 80s & 90s.
@@sasook Contenders are people like McEnroe and Edberg, they are simply in a higher tier. As for the pace, he overlapped with Sampras yet he wasn't quite as great as Pete.

Overall I agree, but they also played in eras that rewarded & encouraged coming forward. Meaning, the technology & court speeds were suited for it, making approaching the net easier. This past decade is the reverse, it practically punishes coming forward which is why there are so many baseliner robots these days. To be an excellent volleyer despite that has some merit, I think. Like, it's similarly why I consider Agassi one of the greatest baseliners ever, because he played in an era that didn't reward baseline play but he still excelled in it anyway.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Pete was facing passing shots that could be hit at 90+ mph. In the 90s his serve was a big deal, hitting speeds of 120s - but nowadays that's common, most players can do that. The ball just moves faster today, primarily because of the string technology & lighter rackets.
@@sasook So your point is that the great volleyers from the past just approached the net more often so they had more opportunities to execute superb volleys? As for Sampras and and the hard hit passing shots, you mentioned his main rival yourself in the comment... But anyway, as I said already, Pete and Roger were contemporaries.

Nobody has ever had the all around game that Federer had. Combine that with pure genius and creativity and you know why he was number one in the world for 4-1/2 consecutive years. Nobody else is even close to that record.

Novak is a counterpuncture and that's it. Hes good at it, but hes a counter puncher. Not much creativity involved in returning the ball your opponent hits you.
When Novak goes 4 1/2 consecutive years ranked as number one in the world give me a call. By the way, hes not even close to that.

@@simonsiddique I never understood how Roger could pull that off. I struggle to find the timing and properly return a good serve for my level, and yet he does that in a second to a Top 10 serve.
@@masters.1000 Its all about practicing your mindset. When asked, Roger once said that he didn't like long points and grinding even in his early training years. Then he always tried to find ways to keep the points short by taking balls early, approaching the net etc. So, in time it became easy for him.

I think RF may say the last volley was the easiest volley to execute...his opponent struck the ball very firmly directly at RF so no parallax error here to worry too much about in the ball tracking...it was well above net height and it was not dipping on RF because of the pace on it and that he was already at net...RF may not have had time to move his body left or right of the ball's path but he didn't need to anyway...his opponent was way off in the deuce court and the add court was a big open target requiring no added pace on the ball from RF because of the pace his opponent gave him...RF simply crouched down with his 80kg slightly forward keeping his head very still and at ball height tracking the ball onto his strings and maintaining his balance through to contact...and at contact RF straightened his wrist with his forearm moving towards the big target in the add court...an amazing player...one of the best volleyers of all time... arguably the best player of all time.

I hope I'm wrong but Federer currently, in my book, is the last player that volleys naturally. The new crop don't look comfortable at the net. Even Djokovic, while competent, don't volley it like how serve volleyers did in the past. It's a lost art.
