  • Excerpt from wikipedia "GAU-12 Equalizer" article '22/3/16:
    The General Dynamics GAU-12/U Equalizer is a five-barrel 25 mm Gatling-type rotary cannon. The GAU-12/U is used by the United States, Italy and Spain, which mount the weapon in their attack jets such as the AV-8B Harrier II, airborne gunships such as the Lockheed AC-130, and land-based fighting vehicles. A lighter four-barrel version, designated GAU-22/A, is mounted on F-35 Lightning II fighter jets.
    ...
    The five-barrel Equalizer cannon was developed in the late 1970s, based on the mechanism of the 30mm GAU-8/A Avenger cannon, but firing a new NATO series of 25 mm ammunition. The GAU-12/U cannon is operated by a 11 kW (15 hp) electric motor, or in external mounts supplied by a bleed air driven pneumatic system. Its rate of fire is normally 3,600 rounds per minute, with a maximum of 4,200 rounds per minute. For use in the AC-130 gunship, the fire rate is limited to 1,800 rounds per minute in order to conserve ammunition and reduce barrel wear.

      It's a 1:1 scale model that was wobbled around on wires to simulate the Harrier's not super stable hovering ability. The most unrealistic thing here is the gun sound and the puny effects of what a 25mm HE/I shell would do to those terrorists' bodies.

    90 seconds is the maximum time hovering for the AV-8B as the engine needs water cooling due to reduced airflow from not being in forward flight. The cannon runs on bypass air from the front fan of the Pegasus Turbofan engine and cannot function in hover mode. Two minor quibbles on an otherwise wonderful sequence in an awesome movie.

    The "Gun" was a nozzle, fed by a propane tank with a spark plug igniting the gas. I arrived on the roof top set (20 stories up) in Miami on the Wednesday before (2 days) the film crew arrived. That afternoon Tommy Fischer's guys tested the gun at about 5:30 that evening. Such an echo throughout downtown Miami that kept going and going. Soon after they got a phone call from the police department asking that whenever the gun was to be fired, give them a heads up. I took care of the motion base that "flew" the Harrier.

      @MiG-31893 Před 11 měsíci

      In theory it could work but the harrier would run out of gas very quickly. I knew a harrier pilot and he said it couldn’t hover for very long

    • @treyaldridge1757

      @@MiG-31893 no, the guns require airflow to eject spent casings so it will not fire in a hover even if you pull the trigger. And the hover duration isn't due to gas, the simple explanation is it's how long the engine can overstress itself before causing damage though there are a lot more factors in that.

    • @stinkyfungus
      @stinkyfungus Před 10 měsíci

      @@MiG-31893
      It has an interlock that won't allow the cannon to fire if the engine nozzles are vectored off the horizontal flight position.
      The reason for This is threefold:
      1. The Pegasus turbofan engine will lose power and the aircraft could depart if it ingests enough gas from firing the cannon. (In forward flight the slipstream takes this gas away from the engine intakes)
      2. The spent shell chute uses airflow to dump the empties overboard, ie: it can jam the ejection mechanism- which on a 5 barreled 25mm rotary cannon... a failure to eject due to shells jammed In the dump chute can be quite catastrophic, That's alot of rotating mass, and some seriously powerfull ordnance to just "stop" forcefully.
      3.the muzzle blast of the GAU12 and rate of fire is stout enough that the recoil will throw the aircraft off target, you won't hit shit even IF it could be done.
      Most modern aircraft have teriary ground safety interlocks built into the weapons systems - like if the landing gear is down and locked the gun can't fire unless you disable the interlock (which would only be authorized to do that if you were ground testing the cannon after servicing it) other planes might have a load cell in the main gear that if the aircraft puts weight on the mains is disables the gun. The gun will fire with the gear down, but not if the plane is sitting on the gear.
      Primary safety is the cockpit arming switches, then the ground pins, and covers (all the little flags on a parked jet the ground guys pull before flight) and the last safety layer are automatic interlocks that disable the weapons systems depending on what condition the airplane is in.
      Even then there are accidents... not too long ago a Belgian F16 accidently shot up another Belgian F16 on the tarmac with its 20mm... completely destroyed it, and damaged another.
