If they sell non-complete decks ALONG WITH decent bearings, I’d say it’s a skate shop.
I don't have a local skateshop but at zumiez i setup a birdhouse board w reds bearings, thunder trucks, spitfire wheels
@@pcastillo24 the next skateshop is like 30 kilometers away from me, thats acceptable in think 👌 50+ kilometer would be diffrent thing
I mean, if the definition of being a skateshop is that they sell skateboards, wouldn't Walmart be a skateshop? haha
Boom
Walmart sells completes that are more closely relate to toys than actual skateboards. Zumies has everything you need to build a custom board from scratch with pro level gear as well.
I WAS GONNA SAY THIS BRO
Walmart is THE skate shop. Haha😂
Core brands let zumiez carry their products
I’d say it depends because When I was 11, I went in there to grab a new board and said I was trying to learn kickflips and my old board got razor tail and chipped too much. The person helped my pick out the board, and then offered to help me learn kickflips. He gave me some advice on my techniques and I actually landed my first kickflip later that day so I personally view them as a skate shop for the help that a singular person provided to me.
Hmmm
i used to work at zumiez, and would i say it's a skate shop? to me it's a 50/50 situation. Back then, zumiez did do alot of stuff for the skate community like the couch tours, skate demos, etc.
nowadays, it feels like they shifted their attention to whatever's "trending" in fashion, and it became like another hot topic.
but is it worth clowning on? nah.
because not alot of people have local shops in their area, so do whatever makes you happy.
but i will say, support your local skateshops ❤️
totally agree, if you have a local, support it! If you don't then go where you can to get your gear and keep skating!
"We want you to learn how to skateboard, we have everything you need at...zumiez!" 😆🤣👌 love braille 😎♥️
As a zumiez employee I’d say it’s less of a skate shop and more of a clothing store that also sells skateboards.
Ngl I didn’t know it was clothes shop until I saw the back they should move the decks more forward
I feel like people in skate shops will treat you better when you get to know them but when you first start going to them they treat you differently while Zumiez workers treat you very nicely
That’s because they want you to buy stuff
I agree. Sometimes it can be super intimidating to go into a dedicated skate shop. They should want you to buy stuff there too though, they gotta keep their doors open too!
As a zumiez employee I love this comment . We try our hardest to make everyone feel welcome
I know what you mean - some skate shops can seem super cliquey, but once they get to know you it's a lot better. Like, my local shop even gives me freebies when I buy stuff, like socks, wax, stickers, hardware- that sort of thing.
This is a great comment. I used to go to Zumiez because my local skate shop had terrible customer service unless you were a friend.
I think what the last person said affirmed my opinion that zumiez is a skateshop. Hypothetically, you could be a skateboarder who never bought anything from anywhere other than zumiez, and you wouldn't be at a disadvantage compared to somebody who shopped at a dedicated local shop. I mean, your selection might be a little limited depending on which zumiez you're talking about, but unless you're really picky about what you're riding, zumiez should have everything you need in order to perform your best without inhibition.
Zumies is definitely a skate shop, if you can buy a board and build it there.
Is it the best skate shop around?, now that’s a different question entirely….
The only reason I see for anyone saying no is because you want to be edgy or you have a better skate shop near you.
You can buy a board at walmart too...does that make them a skate shop?
@@Mbro420 no you can’t build a board there. Nor do they carry bearings or trucks or grip tape or wax. Sure you can buy oil at a Walmart but that doesn’t make it a auto parts store. You can also buy a goldfish. Not a pet shop tho
What's with you liberals and the word "edgy"?
I really don’t see how people are arguing this 🤦♂️😂😂😂.
Keep going with you hot-takes and controversial replies 😅🤣.
@@greysonG10 i be hearing this everywhere someone has different opinion. "you're just trynna be edgy bro" dude my favorite color is pink tf you mean xD
Hi guys! Hope the sun in shining where ever you are! Thanks braille for making such entertaining and fun videos!
I live in Austria and we don't have sun weh have snow😂
Honestly, I’d love to have a genuine skate shop in my town but the best thing we got is a zumiez that’s in the mall! I like it there, the workers are chill with me and I can hold convos about skate clips or other stuff. So while people may think that its a shop for posers, I don’t really care and I do what makes me happy. So yeah, I think it’s a skate shop
I have only ever had positive experiences there and the people who work there are pretty chill. Glad you have had the same experience.
Unlocked a memory I forgot about…
This one time I went to zumiez to get a new board, I knew what I wanted and the guy just asked me “you wanna build it?
Well, yeah. I can probably do it faster anyways.
Went behind the counter and started building my board, and customers started coming up to me for questions. Had to tell several people I didn’t work there but helped them as best I could.
Haha
As an old skater I consider Zumiez to be a store that sells skateboard equipment, but the independent skate shops of my youth were staffed by hardcore skaters, and rather than have 70% of the floor space showcasing apparel, they tended to devote space to music and skate culture.
I think you can pick up a board at Zumiez, but it's a chain store that just happens to sell skate stuff, they're not ride or die, and I doubt that many independent local brands turn up on their shelves, to me that was always a big part of the independent skate scene. I have quite a few hoodies and bits and bobs that were limited runs so that a skater or bmxer could travel to a contest or something like that. I can't find any trace on the internet of most of them.
I guess I'd always rather use an independent retailer, but I bought my most recent board and trucks from a couple of places similar to Zumiez because I don't have a local independent store anymore. They're few and far between now, which makes me a little sad. Hopefully independent skate shops will rise again. I'd rather get info from someone that skates, than someone who doesn't, and I'd rather support the smaller more local manufacturers.
Much love
Keep this style video going, I enjoyed the publics output on skateboarding. Everyone from skaters to people who have never skated were questioned during this video and the responses are awesome!!!
Ya interestinf
“You gotta analyze! We’re doing a survey.” - Ricky is the man
Yes
You can't ask the people who work there...of course they're gonna say yes it is
Hah
Haven’t watched it yet, but yes it is. It’s not a “local” skate shop, but a corporate skate shop.
Soo not an actual skate shop. Just a point of corporate exploitation.
I like the comparison of a mom and pop restaurant vs McDonald's. They both get you to the desired end result (food) but one does it for the love of community and the trade, and the other is out for the money. Zumiez is McDonald's
90 percent of what they sell is skateboarding stuff or has something to do with skateboarding, it’s a skate shop
Big props for not mall grabbing at the mall. If I ever go to zumies I'm mall grabbing all the completes like a champ.
Y’all should buy a board at Zumiez and have them put it together and then grade their work . I’m interested in what a professional would grade their work
Oh man
Go to a local shop and ask the employees if zumiez is a Skateshop
We probably couldn't publish the things they say
Ask every employee where a local street spot is. If they can all give you a correct answer then it's a skateshop.
Haha
You know what's funny? The Vans at my mall has the smallest board selection I've ever seen, yet the zumiez has more variety. At this point, people go to Vans for just shoes and I would argue
that zumiez is more of a skateshop than vans. dont @ me. 👀😂
Vans makes skateboards?
@@comebackstealing5913 They're both skateshops because they sell skateboards and gear, so the people that hate on zumiez need to get over themselves. That's all I was saying.
@@TrackstarOP nah I was just wondering, does vans make skateboards?
@@comebackstealing5913 As far as I know, they dont and I'm not sure why. 🤷♂
Hmmm
I consider Zumiez an apparel store that also sells some skate stuff. I went to a couple locally owned skateshops and that’s the majority or their selection (decks, hardware etc.) and then a small selection of apparel. So like Zumiez but the other way around with the ratio of actual skate stuff to apparel.
Use me as a “Zumiez is a skate shop” button
Ok
I'm from latin america, my first real skateboard, i went to the skateshop and asked for the cheapest setup you could get, they had a bunch of used parts and we built one using those parts. I don't think a shop like zumiez would ever offer something like that, used parts
Ya true. Much love
Love this series, you guys should do a "is Tillys a skate shop?"
Ok
I just ordered a custom from zumiez for my birthday to help me start I’m gonna start as soon as it comes in and I build it so if it helps me learn and start then yes I would consider it a skate shop
I remember being around 10 looking at the shoes at zumiez and an employee tried pushing me to buy some shoes I was holding. He came up to me all aggressive asking what size I was. After I told him he wanted to get a pair from the back for me. I denied and he kicked me out! I felt so uncomfortable...NO SKATESHOP WOULD EVER
Wow ya
You guys need to ask this at skatepark…I wonder how it would turn out? 🙄🤔🤥
Ya me too
The town I live in doesn't have any skate shops. We have a single skatepark, but the skate community isn't big enough to sustain any shops that cater exclusively to skaters.
In the next county over, there's a mall. In that mall is a Zumies. And that Zumies is the only place I was able to go to for skateboards and skate parts for the past year that I've been skating. It's the only place that wasn't an online shop, like Amazon. The only place I could talk to skaters and get recommendations for decks or wheels.
It's where I got my first real board, after my tiny Tony Hawk Walmart board.
I firmly believe that Zumies is a skate shop. Sometimes it's the only place that people have. I don't think that it should be disqualified because of its image or its reputation.
Much love
Considering the fact that I just spent $200 at one yesterday, I’d say they’re a skate shop.
Hahahahaha
Maybe it's just because I've been in some pretty sweet stores I will say no. If 3/4 of the store is clothes and they have an area the size of a stand you'd see walking then they are a clothing store that sells skate stuff. If you walk in and it's wall to wall decks, completes, case after case of griptape, trucks, wheels, bearings, waxes etc that is a skate shop. If they literally only have like two racks of clothes maybe like 4 or 5 shoe styles that is a true skate shop not a clothing store that trys to sell skate stuff.
Much love
The local skate shop in my area slowly stopped selling Skate stuff and turned into a comic book store once Zumiez opened up in the mall.
So sad
They had Helmets at the mall in modesto🤷♂️
I quad roller skate and i say we need a real complete SKATEPARK SHOP in the valley... with everything ,parts and services like an AUTO ZONE ..bearings ,wheels, trucks, pads , top boots n shoes... . Even top scooter stuff 🙃
Lets go
From Australia and we don't have Zoomies, but from what I've seen it looks like more of a skate culture shop, rather than a straight out skate shop.. If that makes sense.
Zoomies hahah love it
Yall should do a video where jd teaches yall how to do a vert bowl
It may be a skate shop but it's not supporting your local businesses
Right
Day 10 of asking to see a one foot nose slide from one of you guys! It was one of my favorite tricks to do before I became paralyzed and it's a trick that you don't see everyday. Love your videos! Much love from North Haven CT 🤙
Hmmm, I will see if McNugget feels up to that challenge
Nice to see Braille finally answered you 👏😁
@@brailleskateboarding that would be amazing! I definitely feel like it's something that Chris or Ricky can nail 👍
We have a music store in downtown that has a skateboard section. I wonder if you can call it a skate shop. Same for a local craf6 brewery called Gnarly Barley. Thwy have a section to buy skate stuff.
Wow sick! I just love seeing skating everywhere
I got my set up at zumiez it's a big company so ig it counts, great vid!
I work at a call center doing cold calls all day. It just soul crushing and I'm actively looking for a new job.
❤️
It would be awesome for Braille to visit local skate shops. It would be fun to watch, and also help promote local shops.
Yes we agree
Zumiez, The hot topic of skateboarding 😂
Haha
i just got my new board there…….
Sick
Tbh, it depends on which one you go to. I've been to some Zumiez where the people actually have a lot of knowledge when it comes to skating or boarding. Most times tho, its just like any other store.
Word
:D looking forword to pt.3, 4
You guys should try the mall in Salt Lake Utah and ask people there!
I consider it a skateboard shop lol like it's feasible...but barely lol. It's more a skate fashion store for the look and aesthetic rather than the actual skate life...if that makes sense
Word
I’d say it’s more a skate apparel shop yes they sell skateboard parts although it’s marketed with clothing and less with the skateboards.
Hmmm
If Zumiez is a skate shop, then Wal-Mart is a bakery.
Hmmm 🤔
@@brailleskateboarding Much love!
Big Rick Ice is correct.. working for a call center is a bit soul crushing. It’s what I do for work here in New Mexico! Some people are chill but mostly rude or angry..
Wow ya
After visiting Zumiez it feels like half the employees dont know what skateboarding is. And only like 1 or 2 skate. And there is less skateboards
Much love
Like glo said if you can get riding there it works.
As a former employee I say no although it's where i've gotten most my boards
go support your local shops zumiez is already huge and is everywhere, zumiez is not a skateshop just because they have boards and stuff there dosent make it one thats like saying walmart is because they have everything as well, now locals have wax wheels stickers boards completes and non bearings everything you could think of thats why most skaters say your a poser if you go there because 1 zumiez taxs tf outta you and your local wouldn't they are just happy your showing support to them 2 because is zumiez hosting local events for you? no. Your local shop will.. and who dosent love events? 3 mostly because like 95% of the store is just skate style clothing or skate known shoes when you could go to a clothing store so i dont believe it to be a skateshop
Not everyone has a local tho
Preach
Ima keep my opinion that zumies is a skate shop, if you can buy and board, get it set up and get the other things you need, than it's a skate shop, just because they sell other stuff doesn't mean they're not one
Much love
I was in a Cowtown a couple weeks ago, Zumiez is not a skate shop, it's the same as Walmart, they technically sell skateboards
Ok
I’d say Zumiez is a skate shop. But honestly asking this is kinda delving into the “is skateboarding becoming too mainstream” question.
I’d say the culture around Zumiez is what’s making skateboarding mainstream. Are the workers passionate about skating as your local skate shop? Most likely not. A skate shop nonetheless, but not necessarily a genuine one
shouldnt we as skateboarders want more people to skate? Isnt that brailles whole agenda to get more people into skating?
@@opinionatedshmuck4405 not that I’m trying to keep people from ever skating, but the appreciation for skating depreciates if it’s just turning into a mainstream hype. If skating is one’s passion or escape, then by all means! But if it’s just some TikTok type trend only used for hype, idk too much of that just lessens the appreciation for it
Hmmm well open debate. Much love
2:07 “Australia, you get nothing iconic ever”
As an Aussie, i can confirm that Ricky clearly hasn’t ever travelled across Australia lol, our country is FULL of iconic landmarks and destinations.
Much love ❤️
If I had to pick a solid stance, I'd say no. Zumiez can give you your fix if you're looking for some skate stuff, but their primary goal isn't to get you on your board.
Ya I see that
Did I notice a glimpse of street-Glo at 0:50? That's the exact expression and hand signal I give to people that are staring at me for too long 😂
Haha
I live in Kauai. Today I seen a kid wearing a braille ( I like skate) hat. 😁
Yes !!!!!!
Retail Skateshop support your local if you can or order online but nothing against a zumiez It does support skateboarding Anyone at Zumiez a mall grab logo would be sweet Id wear one
Ok
Yo can you guys do a video on how to get over the fear of popping off the ground plzzzz
Like what u mean
@@brailleskateboarding like some beginners have the fear of falling and bc of that fear they can’t progress
I would say yes, because it’s the only spot in town I can get some Nike SB.
As a zumiez employee I consider zumiez a skate shop, it varies from store to store on who actually skates that works their and who doesn't but the one I work at alot of us skate and zumiez carries legit skate brands. At the store I work at we try snd give a genuine skate shop feel, we skate in the store, we have skate videos playing on our TV, we listen to a wide variety of music associated with skating we know about the history and we do what we can for our local scene.
It is yes
Yoooo Rick!! 🤣🤣 it’s kalled “demon slayer” n yeah you should watch it
I might buy a skateboard from them just to see if it worth it cuz I heard a lot mixed answers I just want to know if they are worth buying anything from there
No..don't buy a skateboard from Zumiez...just go to your local skate shop..
Just sk8 and have fun !!!when I started skating at 12 we were looked down on now 34 ppl will drive by and say do a kick flip lol 😝
Haha
No Zumies is not a skateboard shop. I entered the store to purchase a pair of shoes and the store personnel completely ignored me. Needing a pair of skateboard shoes and doing a little bit of investigation and finding a pair of shoes to my liking, and according to the website was in stock in the store I entered only to be ignored by the clerk, I guess at my age (62) I don't appear to be the average avid skater. Insulted I left and purchased shoes at a GENUINE SKATE SHOP.
My recommendation to anyone who wants to purchase ANYTHING skateboard related; go to the website of the manufacturer, and purchase directly from a reputable skateboard manufacturers website.
Much love
My question to Ricky is do you reckon city beach is a skate shop?
sure Zumiez is a skate shop. but...SUPPORT LOCAL
Boom
Dude at 7:50 passed the vibe check. Man was speaking facts
Lets go
I have a local skate shop down the street from my house and the guys in there are really cool
Yea support local skate shops...Zumiez sucks @ss..
I think it depends on what you consider a skate shop to be. For me zumies isn’t a skate shop because skate shops are dedicated to skating. Zumies is a skate oriented shop but it’s not a skate dedicated shop.
Ok
I like the comparison of a mom and pop restaurant vs McDonald's. They both get you to the desired end result (food) but one does it for the love of community and the trade, and the other is out for the money. Zumiez is McDonald's
Much love
8:56 and that's why i want to get back to the best coast
Kindness
It's demon slayer not dragon slayer
Day 10 of asking to see a one foot nose slide from one of you guys! Love your videos! Much love from North Haven CT 🤙
Yes Rick Ice
Truth there: TECHNICALLY it is, but unless a shop sells OVER 50% said stuff it in essence is NOT.
lmao how many of the people out in the mall thought the Braille crew was working for Zumiez
Haa
If the shop mostly has skate gear, then yes it a skate shop. Honestly, I may get hate, but I feel Zumies is more of a Skateshop then Vans. Zumies used to be a legit skate shop, then ended up being mainstream and the Walmart of skate shops where not many people who work there know about skating or how to even set up a board and way too much clothing vs actual skate gear. Vans though, is even more mainstream. You know how many people wear Vans and don't even skate? A lot! The Vans near me (in the mall) doesn't even sell boards, just shoes and t shirts. If someone asks is there any skate shops in the mall, of course I'll mention those places but warn them about it first. To be considered a skate shop, their main focus HAS to be selling skate gear.
Much love
Love Mexico and skateboarding
Awesome
I love how you guys aren’t afraid to do different things with skating
homie sitting down said it best. dont worry about labels and just skate how you want.
Agree
How about Zumiez is a gateway skate shop? Looks friendly, you get your first (pro) deck and (pro) apparel there. Then you get into skateboarding, and once you become hardcore... well...
Deal
I can tell what mall this is and let me tell you, I hate it. You have to walk all the way in a complete circle to get anywhere.
But great vid. Y’all inspired me to get a board and start. Have yet to hit concrete but will soon!
Wonder if they designed it like that on purpose
Shoutout to The G.M. for being an essential place of business. I go there when I can. 💯
GM?
@@brailleskateboarding Great Mall. 🤣
Zumiez cares more about money which is why they sell more clothing than skateboards
Yeah, clothes wear out faster than boards. If I had a board for every shirt I had, or pair of pants.. 😂
Hmm never thought of that
Zumiez gave me my first non Walmart board so I have a sentimental attachment to that store
Same
Zuminez is a cool place to have great skateboarder of all time!
For sure
Someone should get sponsored by Zumiez to make it official.
Ok hahah
Id say it is.
7:35 YES exactly!
You probably don't notice but my childhood ride the Barney ride is in your video in that mall
Epic
Man this is the toughest question ever
Haha
Why do yall love ZUMIEZ so much visit a local shop. Is it because they carry Braille ?
Local shops do also just thought it was an interesting topic of debate. We personally support anyone who helps skateboarding grow. Local shops being essential to this. Planning a local shop tour this summer to do lessons and help get new skaters started. NEW skaters is the name of the game ❤️
It was better when it was fast forward I met Jamie Thomas and Rodney Mullen there .Used to be a lot more skate stuff back then it has definitely gotten smaller since .
Rodney Mullen 🔥
I knew you were looking for Yugi's lmao 🤣😂
This man’s said dragon slayer omg 😂
Zumiez is a mainstream corporate skate shop that focuses more on clothing & pop culture than skateboard parts/accessories, so of course everyone in the mall is gonna consider it a genuine skate shop...Try asking that question at a skatepark and I bet you’ll get different results. Zumiez is the place beginners go to until they realize they’re getting ripped off by a big corporation 😂 It’s always better to support your small local skate shops. They need your support more than Zumiez.

Y’all got the white building that looks like Sonics head 😂

Zumiez is a beginner skate shop
It's just a skate shop. Has more choices than most local shops do.
