  • Welcome Gardeners, My small garden in California is experiencing a record breaking Heat Wave!!! Temperatures have reached 113 degrees and it's not over!!! I am doing my best to keep my garden alive and surprisingly it's doing pretty good. Some plants have failed but most are doing GREAT! I can't say enough good things about vinca, plumbago, zinnias and my narrow space vegetable garden. They're all thriving! Thanks for watching my garden videos and I hope you have a beautiful day in your garden too. 🔥😎 Liz

    Hello, Liz. I love that you honor the Lord and thank Him for the beauty in your garden. We have not experienced the extreme heat, but I, too need to water daily- someone is always thirsty. We were considering putting the pots on a drip system, but were discouraged by the cost of bringing water to different parts of the backyard. (And the look of all the pipes.) So, it's me and the hose, and for those pots closest to the house under the patio overhang, it's me and the watering can. Keep cool!🌻🌻🌻

      Hello Majellamaas! Thank you for your kind words and encouragement! I too often think about doing "drip" but for the same reasons as you I change my mind. I see more things going wrong with them than I do a convenience. And you are so right. . . all the tubes look terrible! And with time they don't last and I see other gardeners constantly changing them out and fixing problems. So I guess I am like you. Thank you again for your nice comment. xoxoxo Liz

    So beautiful! 👍❤😎❤👍I learn so much from you- I didn't realize that Lumbago grows so big! This is my first year growing it and I have it in pots. I'm so in love with those bright sky blue flowers! You turned me on to Lantana and mine is in pots. I have to water at least once a day, but twice is best, or it will try to die on me. I use a good Alaska Fish fertilizer and it really seems to work. We've had 90s and 100s here and we're a dry climate, too. I've been watering the heck out of everything and so far, so good. My hubby built us a big garage and this is the first time we've had enough shade and wind shelter to actually get plants to survive out here on the prairie. Claude Barr wrote the Prairie Gardener's Bible (Jewels of the Prairie) when it comes to creating microclimates to get plants to grow here. We have extreme heat in the summer, extreme cold in the winter, and always drying, arid winds.
    I had to do a double take at one of your plants- wasn't expecting that!
    😏😏🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤣🤣🤣

      Hello there, Denise and thank you so much for taking the time to visit me. How exciting that you love your Plumbago and Lantana. I think they might outgrow the pots with time but it sounds like you are doing a good job keeping them well wateted and fertilized like you said! I will have to try that fish fertilizer. It sounds like my plants would love it. I’ve seen other gardeners use it, but never really looked into it now you have me intrigued. I think the reason why my plumbago has not outgrown the stackable tires its in is because the bottom is hollow so the roots are able to go in the ground. They are both so beautiful and you made good choices. I hope you get many years of enjoyment from them. Thank you for the information about the Prairie Garden Bible, jewels of the Prairie. I am intrigued with that as well. Appreciate reading your comment and I hope you have a beautiful and blessed day and your garden too. Thanks again for stopping by.👍❤️🥰🙏😇Liz

    Plum bay go is the more correct pronunciation for plumbago from what I understand. For my hummingbird feeders I only fill mine about a quarter full and clean and refill daily. I try to keep them in mostly shady areas so the liquid doesn’t get so hot. I also have a couple spares and rotate them out so I can give them a good cleaning and opportunity to dry out thoroughly each day. Gotta keep our hummingbirds healthy as possible. I’m in Fresno and my zone is now 9b instead of 9a. I’m discovering some things that did fine in 9a struggle in 9b like my Shasta daisies and my four o’clocks. I’ve had the same temps as you and everything has wilted except my vincas and my geraniums.

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy  Před měsícem +1

      Good morning and thank you for taking the time to comment. You have some very good tips about the hummingbird feeders. I agree I think I’m going to move mine to the shade. It seems like the feeders that are in the direct sun. Definitely ferment a lot quicker. Wow, you cleaners out daily, that is such a huge commitment and I commend you and respect you for doing that. I want to quit my job so bad so I can stay home in my garden every day.Hahaha I love the idea about rotating them. That way you can just put the clean one out instantly while thoroughly cleaning the other one. That is such a great idea. You are so smart and resourceful. Yes, my Shasta daisies definitely struggled in this heat as well. I thought they were a lot more harder than that, but I’m coming to find out they are kind of little sissies.hahaha again I appreciate you taking the time to visit me and I hope you have an amazing day! ❤️👍🥰🌸Liz

      @@GardenHappy well, I retired last year so I have time. Since I don’t fill my feeders full the hummingbirds drink most of it and I’m only dumping a small amount. And yes, a couple of extra feeders makes it so easy to rotate! Although that wasn’t my idea; I was watching another CZcamsr who feeds a lot of hummingbirds and she was the one who said fill the feeders a quarter full and rotate extra feeders so the feeders dry out thoroughly so less chance of the mixture going bad. Yep, my poor little Shasta daisies are more delicate than I thought. I cut them all back yesterday and waiting to see how they do.

      Good idea to cut the Shasta daisies back, I’m learning about cutting them back relieves the stress and they actually grow back even stronger. Do you ever watch Robbie and Gary CZcams channel? She has is from Southern California and has thousands of hummingbirds in her garden. Along with other birds as well. Yep, I watch Robbie from Southern California, she and Gary are fascinating. Aww Liz, your garden videos are always so uplifting to the spirit, thank you for that! Kudos for braving the heat for us:). We are full-on into the rainy season in my part of Florida, so no more garden projects for this year. Between the heat and the humidity, it feels like a steam bath. I'm a fan of Vincas too:) so pretty and reliable. My plumbago is looking great it loves the heat and the rain. The veggie garden aka potager since I have plenty of herbs and flowers is still hanging in there, with luck to the end of August. My kitchen and dining area are full of bundles of drying herbs and I'm still harvesting. My experiments with heat-loving basils have paid off, so there will be plenty of tea (Chinese sweet basil-citrusy, perfect on a hot day). Lots of medicinal teas and Elderberry syrup too. Hello Nicholas, and thank you for taking the time to comment. How I garden in the heat is beyond me, I guess I got acclimated to my environment or I am crazy!!! Hahaha, but it’s not easy. It sounds like you have absolutely beautiful and glorious weather there in Ireland. What a blessing That you did not have to water so much. Thanks again for taking the time to visit me. I hope you have a beautiful beautiful day in your garden too! 👍❤️🥰Liz

    Watching from Brasil, we are in our winter season here in São Paulo and the weather is sometimes very sunny and then suddenly we get cloudy and cold😊. My little Garden is not liking the weather much but I am trying with it. I LOVE hearing your chickens and they should brag about their acomplishments😅.
    Beautiful Garden, very colourful.

I hope your garden will adjust and start performing for you better. Yes I do love the sounds of chickens. They make such sweet and soothing noises. They make me so happy when they lay an egg and I praise them!!! Thank you again for taking the time to visit me.❤️👍🥰Liz

    I was wondering how you were doing through the heatwave in your garden. Spider mites are a continual battle for me! I failed to put in the vinca next to my front walk and I am regretting it so much, they are such troopers and are so beautiful, I won't make that mistake again. My zucchini are still just baby plants. Just FYI, I sent you an email, check your SPAM if you don't see it in your inbox! Thank you for the update on your garden and glad you ladies (chickens) are still doing so well.

      Good morning Pam, so nice to hear from you. It’s not too late to plant your vinca. I have new vinca growing back from the seeds from the vinca that I planted a couple months ago. It’s not too late. I encourage you to still do it. I just checked my email and responded. Thank you so much for your email. I’m sure we will talk more soon👍❤️🥰Liz

      Hey there, my friend that’s what I said last year. And the year before. LOL I’ve given this Lantana a couple years now and each year it’s getting worse and worse. Trust me I’m all about giving things a chance and saving money, but I think it’s time to let go. I appreciate you taking the time to visit me and offering me your encouragement. Have an amazing day Vernitajames2677! ❤️👍🥰Liz

    Έχουμε κι εδώ στην Ελλάδα πολλή ζέστη εδω και πολλές μέρες και επιμένει. 40C-104F, έχουμε ταλαιπωρηθεί, εμείς, τα φυτά,τα ζώα, δεν είναι ανθρώπινες θερμοκρασίες αυτές και νομίζω οτι κάθε χρονιά θα είναι και χειρότερα! Να προσέχεις τον εαυτό σου, τα ζώα σου και τα φυτά σου, υπομονή, τί άλλο μπορούμε να κάνουμε; Πάντως, τα φυτά σου είναι υπέροχα, ότι καιρό και να κάνει!!!🌺🌹🌸🌻🏵️🥵🥵🥵🥵

    It has been 123 here a couple of times! Everything except my sunflowers is DEAD!!! I'm going to go out back and just mow down what's left. I do have my squash mound, with lots of flowers, but the fruit isn't developing, so I'm guessing they are DONE? I'm also taking out my lantana out front!

      We got up to 119° during the heatwave. During that time my squash and cucumbers stopped producing. Once we cooled down they started producing again. They definitely are heat sensitive!

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy  Před měsícem +1

      Well, my goodness I don’t blame the cucumbers and squash for being heat sensitive with those temperatures. In all honesty, I think they did pretty good to tolerate that as long as they did.😫😫😫Liz

    Hey Liz, your garden is so green and lush looking. I haven't been working in my garden I just water it once a day. I feel bad for my garden and not keeping it looking as beautiful as I want it too. I have a question. Could you please tell me about how much of the Espoma Rose Tone Fertilizer to put in each pot of vincas? I really need to fertilize mine but I'm worried I might put too much or not enough. Your vincas are looking super beautiful!! Have a blessed day sweet lady. 🐞💐🦋

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy  Před měsícem +2

      Thank you for your kind words. I wish I could spend more time in my garden, but I work as a courtesy clerk at a grocery store and I sometimes only have enough time to water. I would put a tablespoon of fertilizer in each vinca in the pot. Because that fertilizer is organic, it’s not harsh and it doesn’t burn your plants. Me personally, I would put one tablespoon in each pot. I hope that helps. And thank you again for taking the time to visit me.🥰👍❤️Liz
