I had this idea of going gray that I did not see in your video. I would like your thoughts on it. I have colored my hair for almost 30 years. My gray hair does grow fast. I was thinking of continuing coloring it with a semi permanent color that washes out. I was thinking to do that, until my demarcation line reached my chin, and then washing the semi permanent out to see what my actual hair looks like. Supposedly, semi permanent hair color washes out in "28 washing's". For me, it washes out much faster. But I haven't used it for quite a few years. Could you tell me your thoughts on this method? I will be using natural instincts hair color by Clairol, I believe

    • @KatieGoesPlatinum
      @KatieGoesPlatinum  Před 8 měsíci

@@bres143 I'm afraid that doesn't work very well - unfortunately, any dye that has the word "permanent" in it will permanently stain your hair and you will have to grow it out (it won't wash out, no matter what they say). I used semi-permanent dye on my hair when I was dyeing, and believe me, that didn't make my transition any easier - still took me a long time to grow out.
Instead, if you don't want to deal with a skunk stripe, watch this video for some alternative solutions - hope that helps! czcams.com/video/xwQ7cNPVQ-8/video.html

Its so strange to me now I am a year in to growing out from blonde to grey,if you're an older male going grey you're George Cluney,if you are female you are letting yourself go. This attitude needs to be challenged. Why so much pressure to dye our hair? Noone has said anything but no doubt my grey hair with blonde streaks is getting tongues wagging. Which sais more about them than it does about me. I have discovered my eyes look bluer with grey hair, and I can wear stronger lipstick colours,so I am enjoying trying out new things.

I'm going cold turkey. It's kinda fun, actually. Very calico. Cold turkey shows that you don't care what others think, and you could possibly give others inspiration to do the same. Just be stylish about it. If you curl your hair or do beachy waves, the demarcation doesn't show up as much. 😊

Very informative video. A lot of information I could have used during my transition. I was a dark brunette. I transitioned back in 2020 and I just decided to go cold turkey, with the whole demarcation line and all. But a quarter of the way I discovered a color depositing conditioner that was a game changer for me (Overtone). I used the Extreme Silver color and the new growth turned a beautiful dark silver and I also noticed that the brassiness on my old, faded hair was dramatically toned down. Although the demarcation line was still there, it appeared to blend in better. As the hair grew I just continued cutting the tips and my hair has never felt healthier. The color is temporary and does fade away. That's was how I managed to go through my awkward stage. I still use the product and I bounced back from Extreme Silver to vibrant silver just to give highlights to my white hair. I hope this tip can help someone out there.

I have very long hair and dark brunette. I am also in the public eye. So I let my roots grow out a couple inches, then I took demi perm (brunette) color and painted it in small streaks at the roots, leaving most of the siliver, I then had extensions made for me in a combo of brunette and silver hair. That way instead of looking like I was letting myself go, it looked intentional and I can't say how many compliments I have received. I now only have about 3 inches left of the dark box color left. Almost there.

I quit coloring my hair with henna about four years ago, because while my hair was about 20% gray, the roots were showing so fast that I couldn’t keep up with them. My husband trims my elbow length hair, and he applied the henna for me, it was messy and time consuming. He was telling me that I should just go silver and embrace the color. Of course he was already fully silver, and he looks great with it. So I did not have to deal with being told I needed to keep coloring my hair. So I would definitely recommend that when the silver strands come in, but to not fight it with putting toxic chemicals on your head. And honestly most of the hair color looks unnatural and monotone, like cheap plastic wig hair. So I think going silver early is the best option so you are not dealing with such a drastic change.

I did cold turkey with some haircuts and toner that helped with demarcation. And, I did start using purple shampoo before I went fully gray to reduce brassiness. Also, let the ladies know that only letting the frame of their face go gray is not always how your entire hair will look. I have much more grey around the face, but the rest of my hair is really salt n pepper. Great video with great options for all! Thanks, Katie.

A big life change inspired me to stop the dye in 2018, and I'm soooooo happy I did! My hair was dry and drab for years and I got so tired of the chemicals and mess and feeling "not put together" when my hair started to sparkle. Where did that idea even come from?! The stripe was not my favorite for the first two months, but after that it got better and better and I never looked back. I had fun twisting it back and with braids, headbands, and ponytails. I did some blonde highlights and cut it to my chin, and then grew it back long. It makes wearing eyeliner more fun, and even the colors you opt for evolve (I used to wear mostly gray!). Mostly I felt more ME, and it was a really cool science experiment. Katie was a HUGE inspiration through the whole process, and for better or worse, it IS easier and more fun challenging a norm if you have support and encouragement!

I originally started with the strip method, but it was tricky doing it myself so after one time,I just went cold turkey.

I really love the silver/white color. I have never thought of gray hair as being a bad thing. I’m a natural strawberry blonde, but I’ve had it several different colors depending on the photo shoot and company.
Since I’m in a business where my hair is professionally colored, I will probably let my hair grow out gray or have it stripped and colored gray. I That’s usually harsh on your hair, but my hair is just above my bum and I really don’t want to cut it because I really like being able to braid my hair or pulling it up in a pony tail. Low maintenance is definitely important.
    Good luck and Happy Gray!

If you are on the fence about going grey, I highly recommend starting with a grey/silver wig. I bought one (under $100), a few months before I decided it was time. Most of the time I wore it at home, and I got used to how I would look, what makeup adjustments to make, etc. I went the full silver with lowlights salon method, my new silver growth blended perfectly. Finding the right colorist is a must, as mentioned in the video. Also, make sure they use Olaplex with the bleach products if you go this route. I first went for a cut and color consult. I felt so comfortable on that appt., I scheduled the big one. I didn’t have to return for multiple color treatments, but I continued to go for occasional cuts.

I have been coloring my hair for more than 30 years. Basically since college. My natural color is a dark ash and I have been dying it red. I have thought about going gray. My Mom had the most beautiful silver hair when she was older. I am reluctant right now to let my hair go natural b/c I don't have that much gray in my hair yet. So far it is just a little bit mixed in my hair. (I can see it when my roots get too long) When I do go gray I will probably have my hair colored a lighter tone of my natural dark ash blond or maybe do a fun quirky color.

I got a “color gloss” in April and I’m loving the results of this method! Almost a year later, the light brown dye is naturally washing out and it’s gradually getting more white. A gloss is acidic (and not permanent), so no damage. The white “highlights” 😂 also blend nicely. When I’m totally ready to go gray, I’ll just let the gloss wash out gradually, like it is now 😊

That’s the method I’m using! I love how my gray/white hair looks with just a slight brown tinge of color over it. If I apply it to dry hair and leave on under a cap for 1/2 hour before rinsing it really lasts. Demarcation line not bad at all with this method. When I’m ready, I’ll stop glossing and it will be a fresh head of gray, undamaged hair. It’s been fun so far:)

Wonderful video - inspirationally presented! I have natural dark brown hair, gone gray with a one-inch white area from ear to ear, so I dyed it light golden blonde for several years. Decided to go gray a few months ago and was doing it cold turkey. The golden blonde was quite brassy so the salt and pepper gray looked dramatically different from the brassy blonde. I decided to continue with the process of cold turkey but first I dyed it one last time using Nice 'n Easy Soft Silver to lessen the dramatic difference between the gray and the blonde. It did the trick!

I'm blonde, and 50, and It took 2 years to grow out the bleached, previously dyed section. In the mean time I searched for a dye to colour the ends with to match my roots, to varying degrees of success. In the end, the ends were bleached bright blonde, and my regrowth was dirty blonde with grey streaks, and I impatiently cut off the last two chunks giving myself a choppy shag type of haircut where every strand was a foot long from scalp to end. It felt good. But I didn't like my colour, so I bought an ash blonde, but I didn't like that either so I bought a medium silver and that didn't work...

How I transitioned .I had lower shoulder length. I can't say i was "grey" because my black hair is very black and my white is very white. So ill call it salt and pepper. I bleached and toned it. It took me 7 days to get it a pale yellow. Bleached one day, Recuperate the next. Then again. 3x in 7 days. Then I semi dye it , no ammonia, no developers in the color grey.
The down sides: patients you must have lol!
Semi dyes fade fast. So be willing to color often. The good thing about is, its like a deep mask or continioner. No mixing its just deposit the color. I did trim my hair more often them usual due to the damage the bleach caused on my ends and to promote hair growth. By the end i hap top shoulder length. I was ok with that.
I did not re touched my new growth only with semi grey dye, to easy a blend. And just grew it out. Now I have no bleached or processed hair dyes.
I do get board at times with my natural (now) grey hair. So what I do is I'll semi dye it in a deep purple a dark navy blue and it eventually fades in a lavender grey or a blueish grey. Until it's all grey again. Ty for your tips. 🍒

I’m 38 and my hair is going grey FAST. I tried dying my hair a few times during the pandemic with Demi permanent but it still fried my hair so I grew it out. The whole right side of my face hairline is now grey at the roots in such a way that it looked like my hairline was receding, so I got what I thought was a color depositing shampoo to kind of bring my hairline back while my grey grows out, but it ended up just being normal hair dye! I’m SO mad! I’m looking to maybe bleach it to grey so I don’t have to go pixie, nor have to deal with this growing out, nor having the “receding hairline” issue. The dye did confirm that it was grey hair, NOT a receding hairline thankfully, so there’s that, but this grey is coming in so shockingly fast, that bleaching to grey is probably going to be easier than dying to cover it. Roots will certainly be super easy to catch, and less and less will have to bleached as time goes on. I clicked on this thinking that this “bleach it grey” idea is what you were going to address, so I guess I’m going to have to keep looking.

    • @KatieGoesPlatinum
      @KatieGoesPlatinum  Před 22 dny

Hi, I didn't address that because it doesn't work and could do a lot of damage to your natural hair. You can try to go to a salon and do gray blending as mentioned in the video, but you need a stylist who is REALLY experienced, and it helps if you have healthy, lighter-colored hair.
You can still do gray blending with dark hair, but the risk of damage is higher (some women feel it's worth the risk. It's up to you).

I started getting grey hair when I was about 10. By 32 I was 85% grey/white. I had been dying my hair since I was 14. I originally had light blonde hair and the dye wouldn't color the grey. So I had the opportunity to be a head model for a major salon and the sky was the limit for anything I wanted. I decided to do a dark cherry and I loved it! Fast forward to 2019...I was in a major home store and noticed my grey roots and my super thin hair (from having PCOS) in a mirror and I was horrified. It looked like my hair was sitting away from my scalp. I went home and decided I was no longer going to dye my hair and buzzed it all off. I mean all of it! I bought some very nice wigs and I loved them, but one day my family saw my hair and asked why I was not embracing the white hair. I asked myself the same question. I've since let it be natural and everyone loves it! Do I miss my dark auburn hair? Sometimes, but not having to dye my hair every 3 weeks (yes, 3 weeks) is very freeing. I keep my hair about an inch long and spike it, because that's what it likes to do naturally. I have had to play with my makeup and clothes because I was so use to having dark hair. But is it worth it? Absolutely! I just noticed my profile picture is still the old me. I need to change that!

I’m going grey cold turkey. I didn’t realize what I had done until I just watched your video. I use to part my hair on the left for 20 years. My part moved further and further to the left to hide my grey roots. I tried to go platinum because my hair was getting harder to cover. I liked being blonde, but it ruined my hair. I had tried going grey before but couldn’t handle the judgement. So this last time I transitioned from platinum to an ash blonde. I used a 4 week chestnut color on my roots a couple of times and a chestnut conditioner color deposit. Then I just decided it was time to let go. I had already gone 2 months and could hide most of the growth with my part. Once I made it a year without dye, I went to the salon and moved my part to the center and got curtain bangs. Best decision ever. Somehow the way I faded out dying my hair made the demarcation line more blended and I was able to shock everyone with all of my grey! I love how it looks transitioning. It’s about halfway down my neck now. I have a way to go. The most fun thing is seeing my natural hair color underneath. I haven’t seen my natural hair color since high school because I started going grey at 12. I’m so happy to see those beautiful colors again. My grey is mostly white. It’s been delightful!

I’m so glad you’re so happy with it! It sounds gorgeous. Sounds like you also found a great way to go gray that works for you - and that makes a huge difference ♥️

My natural color is dark brown, and at age 57 the majority of my hair is still primarily dark brown with no gray at all, except around my temples.
I saw my 1st gray hair at age 22 but eventually the dark dye couldn't cover the gray, so in my 30s I started going blond.
Now after 35 years of dying it blond, I want to go natural, but my dark hair looks terrible against my older skin.
My younger brother went silver 15 years ago and always looked amazing.

Genetics are so strange! My Dad (stepfather) had beautiful salt & pepper hair but my siblings (his children) barely have any gray!

Fab video! And thank you for the mention. It was finding your Facebook group that helped me throughout the whole cold turkey transition - everyone is so supportive in whichever way you choose to go grey 😊

If your hair is colored and your roots are very gray you can very gradually lighten your hair color to a very light blonde and it will blend blend seamlessly while cutting the bottom colored hair off off gradually.

It really depends on how dark your hair is - if your hair is very dark and/or damaged, I wouldn't recommend going that route. But if you have light-colored hair or very healthy hair, it can work beautifully!

Of course, you would just be applying the lighter color to the new route area until you get light enough to just stop coloring it all together.

I’m at the “oh dear, what do I do now” stage…about 2” grown out. It getting harder hide it by dusting the grey, especially the back. My ends are brassy.
Thanks for all the ideas/ options. The worst part is that my husband hates that I’m doing this now…just turned 65.

I’m sorry that your husband isn’t happy with your transition but I hope you stick with it. It’s easier if you have support but you can still do it. You’ve got me and a ton of other women here rooting for you. ♥️

I’m watching to find a method. I had to have a buzz cut. It took 6 years to grow my hair back out long. My mother was upset that her daughter had grey hair when she still has very little and paid for me to have my color done. Having a buzz and pixie and growing it out is not something I want to do again, so the dye strip sounds the best if I can do it.

The dye strip is a great method ♥️ - it helps you avoid so many transition issues.

I’m going to install silver grey dreads which will blend in the grey roots and dyed hair, add length and thickness and mix in a few coloured ones for fun. I been dying my root for a decade now and getting bored with that now. Problem is I’ll need a new hat!
