Thx for Throwing Muses & recordings & tradings ! In my Diamond Heart version is rebalanced video and audio. More colours, dark-light range wide is heavy (original source is very lighted). Sound in low and above vocal range is better balanced. Audio and video contains some distracting errors.
NO WONDER this is VHS quality, for best visuality you see fullscreened monitor with HD resolution from 2-3 meter in dark room. (sorry my english) - Hudba

Will they ever get the recognition they deserve? Throwing Muses are the Beatles to me.
If you're looking for justice in the realm of popular appreciation of good vs. mediocre/bad music, you can forget it. The public (and I include music critics here - they are not excluded) is a stupid, fickle beast and likes whatever it likes for reasons unknowable. Forget what others think of the music you enjoy and just enjoy it on its own merits without regard for what others think.

@@chuckschillingvideos True but sometimes and for no particular reason a band or artist who were not popular at the time suddenly gain recognition . Often when the band are no more.
A classic example from music history being the Velvet Underground and their debut album
Also the music of Joy Division is far more popular now than in 1979/80.

I saw Guadalcanal Diary on the first album tour in London. Must have been around the mid/late 1980's.
After the gig they came into the audience and I had a long conversation with a couple of the band. They were very friendly and I think a little surprised that their "little band" were playing a venue in, London England. Got the first two albums. Do you know what happened to them and what they are doing now ?
I also have an early album by the Swimming Pool Q's. But I never got to see them live. Again do you know what happened to them ?
Obviously neither band ever became more than a cult band.
@@keithbate9405 Keith, thanks for asking. I'm friendly with the members of both Guadalcanal Diary and the Q's. Both bands played shows in the mid and late 200o-teens. the Swimming Pool Q's being more active than Guadalcanal Diary. I was lucky enough to see and film a lot of Q's shows, one GD show and a show where Murray Attaway of Guadalcanal Diary opened for the Swimming Pool Q's. I am guessing you probably have not heard that, sadly, Jeff Walls of Guadalcanal Diary passed away a couple of years ago from a horrible pulmonary disease. He had been quite active with the Woggles at the time he was stricken.
Fantastic performance. Throwing muses were the best American band signed to 4AD. Yes, better than the Pixies, whom I loved, but never connected with them as much as with the Muses. Kristin Hersh is magic! Leslie, Tanya and David....can't get a better group of people together. Long Live Throwing Muses!
They were the first American band singed by 4AD btw. Nice to see so much of Leslie in the performance.

Saw them on this tour in Iowa City. Fantastic. Love the Kristin sway as she performs. Strange but one thing I remembered was David’s hairy left leg which had a bald spot where the back of his hand would hit is leg with each hit of the snare. They played in a tiny venue which suits them better than a large outdoor stage. Kristin has an intensity, as she still does, which comes through in the lyrics, the subtle wavering of her voice, her steady unblinking gaze. An old SD video does not capture much of this. Songs like Hate My Way pierces your soul. Where the Pixies get credit for the quiet loud dynamic. Hersh and Donelly brought a distinct dissonant vs melodic, slow vs fast dynamic, and emotions through the roof. “A kitchen is a place where you prepare, and clean up….” Goosebumps! Where Black Francis made up fictional lyrics (which I love also don’t get me wrong), Kristin’s lyrics had heart, pain, and usually metaphorical. Tanya’s lyrics and chords where usually a respite from Hersh’s intensity and thrust.
When they first emerged around 1986 . Melody Maker described them as "pop music for the 21st century "
they were so unique . Their "angular" pop/rock was so far ahead of its time.
Not just one of the greatest US bands but for me one of the greatest rock bands of any era .
"Fish" is simply brilliant live as well as on record.
This was the first time I saw the Muses. Pixies came on after them. Fantastic afternoon in the sun.

I didn't see them at this Glastonbury but did see them for the first time two months later in the US, when they opened for R.E.M. I've been a huge fan ever since. I've seen TM and its offshoots several times over the years and even got to know Kristin a bit through a mutual friend. Fantastic performer and person.

The first time I saw TM , Pixies supported them . I think it was 1988. saw them in London and Birmingham on that tour,.

The Muses were just a bit too weird for the time especially being a mostly female group. But their music & composition is out of this world personally but it stills sounds as haunting and weird in 2021. Thanks Kristin for believing in your music so we can still hear it today. I'll keep flying the flag.
Well wasn't time ready for all fem bands ? The slits and X Ray specs were already history at this point.
Just couple years later there were a host of Fem/ Fem fronted bands, L7, Hole, Magnapop, Muffs, she that's just a start. Sinead, Björk, Polly Jean, No Doubt, and on and on and on.
Perhaps on being as innovative as Muses were, at that point in time, this old male chauv pig might have been surprised ;)
The Real Ramona is one of my favourite all time albums ever. Didn't realize Leslie was behind those baselines on that album til I saw this today. Say Goodbye just gives me goosebumps...epic tune
She had left Throwing Muses before TRR. Fred Abong played the bass on that album.

Oh fantastic! I was there, my first Glastonbury! Thanks for posting this, one of two bands I was committed to watching, the other being the Pixies, who followed them onto the mainstage!
Throwing Muses at their best followed by Pixies. It gets no better. I'm so jealous!

This lineup of Throwing Muses was awesome. As each person left the band and Tanya did her own thing they just never added up to the sum of this band. I guess personalities, aspirations, and egos got in the way. I wonder why Leslie gave up being in a band - she was a great bass player.
Agreed! Indeed, one of my very favorite bassists, Amazing, especially on the self-titled and House Tornado albums. Saw them most recently in 2011 and they absolutely rocked. Kristin and Dave were as you would expect (bloody fantastic), and as for Bernard, well, sorry to say this - hes no Leslie Langston. However, who (other than Leslie Langston) is ?! - PLUS: he is an awesome bass player in his own right.
Leslie did play on the first belly recordings though, the e.p. the album is all her bass and it shows! Everything after that was terrible and I really thought belly would work. Gail was just the worst replacement.
I wish I had the opportunity to see them live. They were a wonderful band, with a unique and virtuoso ability. No shortage of charisma.
@@earinsound We are just left with so few recordings with her. Still I can get why she left the music industry. Had a lot of friends in Athens, Ga that were in bands in the early and mid 90's. Lot of people had aspirations and just a tough industry.

I saw them at the late lamented International 2 in Manchester that summer, Band of Susans supporting. Was just listening to the tape today - wonderful stuff.
I was there. I must have been close to where this was shot. Great set. Lots of great bands that year.

Great guitar band, underrated
magnificent - I was too young to have been going to see them at this stage, but I loved Hunkpapa. Great seeing Fall Down live. (Didn't even get to a Real Ramona show either, which has always irritated. Went to a couple of Red Heaven shows)
Standing just to the left of the mixing desk...this and pixies after....then went and partied for rest of the festival

Their best two albums, I think. My two favourites, anyway. Hunk papa and The Real Ramona. Did Leslie Langston, their bass guitarist, leave the group after Tanya Donelly, or before. I forget. Dave Narciso is a shit hot drummer. Better than Keith Moon! 👌

Leslie actually rejoined for a short time for the recording of Red Heaven before Bernard George's joined. I think it was to help out just for the recording of that album. I recall reading that somewhere.
