Fun Fact about "The Magic Lamp": there's a deleted ending shot of the other Narrow Gauge engines sleeping when Peter Sam returns and it's the only time we'd see Rusty's sleeping face.

That was another excellent review once again Tay!! Tales from the Track is one of the rare releases to come for VHS and for the episodes, while I do agree that some of them were pretty boring or mediocre there were some positives I do give credit like Skarloey being in character in The Magic Lamp or Thomas thinking about the consequences in Thomas Tries His Best, but that doesn’t save it from being boring episodes, and Flour Power is the only good episode I can agree with for being a Halloween related episode, Thomas and Diesel being paired up and Brandon’s narration being excellent especially for Diesel! Looking forward to another Hit Era release to come soon! 😃👍🏻

What a great review, Tay. As always, your VHS/DVD reviews are so enjoyable to watch. I agree that flour power is the only good episode on this release and the rest are just sh**. Definitely looking forward to your review on Thomas and the Toy Workshop. As that release contains one of my least favorite Hit episodes, Thomas and the Statue

Ironically, Season 9 was the first ever production that Sharon Miller was involved. The only episodes I enjoy from her are Thomas' Day Off and (guilty pleasure wise) The Magic Lamp.
I didn't even know this VHS release even existed as I already had the DVD version of it (which I'm glad I did, cause this one is a weird choice to end Thomas' VHS run).
As for Keeping Up with James, this is another one of those infamous episodes where it was criticized by another key person: that being Hilary Fortnam (youngest daughter of Wilbert Awdry in 2011) stating that her father would be very distressed if he ever saw it mostly due to the term 'winter holidays' replacing 'Christmas'. Though this episode was made in 2005, and her thoughts were in 2011. Guess not everyone has caught up with some things in between productions.

Personally, I think that Season 9 (As well as the entire HiT-Era) is overhated and underrated, but I respect your opinion.
Flour Power and Keeping Up with James would both be among my favourite episodes from Season 9.
Thomas and the Birthday Picnic, to me, is a relatable episode as there have been times where I have had having trouble trying to think of a good idea too. Thomas is my 3rd favourite character (With James and Duck being my 1st and 2nd favourites) as he is a really relatable character to me.
While I think that Tuneful Toots is underrated, I will admit that the episode could have worked a little better if they had Skarloey, Rheneas and Peter Sam's roles replaced with Sir Handel, Smudger, Duke and Mighty-Mac.
And Thomas Tries His Best is my guilty pleasure.
Also, Every Day's a Special Day on Sodor is one of my favourite songs from the HiT-Era.

Flour Power used to be my favourite Season 9 episode because of the spooky atmosphere. But now I think a hopper for flour is very unhigenic!!

The HiT Era in general is a very mixed bag for me. I think that if Mike and Junior stayed and adapted their scores into the instrumentation of the Hartshornes, Britt and David were put back on the writing team, and the learning segments were truly educational as to show audiences of all ages how engines and railways work (like the live-action Down at the Station segments in the CGI era), then the HiT era would have competed with the Classic Series as a whole.

I recently rewatched this dvd because of the unlucky tugs review on season 9 of The Thomas Retrospective. Flower power and keeping up with James are the best, the magic lamp, and tuneful toots are ok, Thomas and the birthday picnic and Thomas tries his best are the worst. The learning segments I don’t actually mind that much.

Hey, Taylor! Just finished listening to your thoughts on this Thomas VHS or DVD. I saw this a few days ago, and honestly, i don't blame you for saying a majority of this release is bad, most of the episodes on this one were written by Sharon Miller after all!
Brandon's narration in certain bits of the release are hit and miss for me like him saying "English Muffins" instead of crumpets in Flour Power, or for some reason giving Peter Sam a TEXAN voice in The Magic Lamp when he's supposed to be WELSH and not have Duncan's personality! It sounded like Brandon was doing a Applejack impression in that episode as well! Why? Looking forward to your next review, by the way! Zak.

Given Peter Sam’s character, I think he would’ve been the one to be on Rusty’s side alongside Skarloey and Rheneas. Remember in Steam roller where he did that to Sir Handel when he was being teased about his wheels?

  • @danielfotheringhamproducti7368

I have the British version, which I remember watching a lot originally when I was younger, and looking back… I‘m on the fence, meaning I am mixed on it. Flour Power in first, and Keeping Up with James in second, are the best 2, but the rest… are meh. I don’t mind the learning segments, but it’s nothing that special, aside from the first one.
As for the DVD, I like the Bonus Games a bit, but these days, it’s nothing special.
I‘m kind of split on Michael Brandon, and Michael Angelis between Seasons 8-16, as while both have their moments, unfortunately they suffer in different areas too.
There are actually some really good releases that exist in both America and Britain, but I fell off the show a few times, so my opinions are more on the fence than most.
Still, good review Yami, and hope to see more reviews in the future! Stay cool! 😄👍

Thomas & the Birthday Picnic: Not a bad story idea but the way it plays out is pretty boring. I think they should have gone a more comedic route. I do at least like how united the steam team is. 4.5/10
Flour Power: Solid Thomas/Diesel episode with some really cool scenery. Also a prime example of how much of a non-factor the engines crews were in the HIT Era. 7.5/10
The Magic Lamp: I like the sense of mystery in this episode but my gosh Peter Sam is baffingly out of character. 6/10
Keeping Up With James: Solid James/Edward episode with a really cool crash. 7.5/10
Tuneful Toots. This episode is god awful. Rusty is extremely out of character & my god does that horn get annoying. 0/10
Thomas Tries His Best: First off lame title secondly, This episode is about as boring & typical as it gets for the HIT Era. The only thing I like about it is that Thomas ponders the consequences of his actions. 2/10
