@@noctstrife I remember reading an old interview with Yoshihisa who’s the director of the HE engine and some English speaking sega spokesman and yoshihisa said that the concept of the HE engine was in his and his teams mind even way before 2005 and sonic 06 was likely going to be the first HE engine but since they started late (considering they were a small team when they started as the rest of Sonic Team were already working on 06 which started after billy hatcher and the hedgehog engine was complete after 06 had “ended development”) They sadly couldn’t use the engine for 06 So we only know 3 things about the Hedgehog Engine 1.The concept was already there before they even started working on it. 2.06 was CONSIDERED to be the first Hedgehog Engine game 3.Hedgehog Engine was meant to be a 3rd party engine but the idea was quickly thrown out for some odd reason. Also a small fun fact: The engine 06 uses was likely derived from Billy Hatcher to save time and heavily modified and its been speculated multiple times, and billy hatcher uses a modified version of the Adventure 2 engine (it had an internal name that was even shared around at sega I sadly forgot it’s name tho) which was in turn a modified version of the Adventure 1 engine so in a sense 06 could be considered adventure “3” as it uses a Frankenstein monster’d engine of the adventure engine.
It kind of reminds me of sonic heroes and how it uses some parts of the adventure engine as well like iirc the graphics renderer was straight up taken from adventure 2 as well as the physics code albeit heavily tuned up.
But we sadly will never get a concrete answer as 06’s director Nakamura prob signed up some kind of NDA to never speak about 06’s development only maekawa was the only one who squashed up some 06 rumours that I never believed in (like that one rumor that nakamura was some replacement director because the og director switched to the wii version which was turned into secret rings just because of poor journalism cough ign cough and when I asked maekawa he said nakamura started the whole project from day 1 and he was also a part of a small team years before 06 where nakamura and his team conceptualised a game about physics and how nakamura wanted to use this technology concept on a sonic game someday which also created silver)
Seeing Kingdom Valley as it was going to be with the hedgehog engine (albeit 2) is going to be INCREDIBLE. I like this song btw! The new choir mixed in with the guitar at 2:04 is SUPER nice. This is definitely my favourite remix of a sonic song, I can't stop listening to it lol
