How to Static Time an Engine

  • I start from scratch by finding compression on #1 cylinder, fitting the distributor and set the timing in various ways and then capping off by fitting the HT leads into the cap in the correct order.

    My God! The old Holden 186, it's been 40 years at least or more since I did that as a young lad ( it was a HR Holden 161, 3 on the tree) and the amount of times setting the points then the timing light & vacuum guage, what memories you bring back just having clicked on your chanel, because that's all we had in those so called good old days! Thaught myself so much about cars, these days I'm using an OBD Scanner, fault codes fuel trims etc (that reminds me of the old single barrel Stromberg carby which is how I understand stand fuel trims)! Well done Mate, good to see you 'OLD, new blokes, teaching that old fast disappearing technology! Thanks for the memories!,

    I used to have trouble with those red motors because the timing mark on the harmonic balancer would shift because it skids on the rubber damper over time…….
    It looks like your method takes that out of the equation….??
