For an entry level delivery vehicle I think this thing is genius. The average drive speed in the city is probably around 14 because of signals anyways. Don't want people rolling these things at 20mph. For people with mobility issues this seems awesome. Always great to have options for more people and this bike hits multiple markets at once. Nice.
Great point about the speed in cities, Dustin. It's a neat little ebike with lots of possibilities. I like how sturdy it felt, and appreciate the overbuilt fork and powerful motor they chose. It's a lot more refined than some of the other trikes I've covered in years past. They were neat, but felt more like conversion kits vs. a purpose built product like this. Other good ones include the EVELO Compass and Liberty Trike, both custom designs like the RadTrike. Court, thanks for the great preview/review. I've looked at three other "first look" previews as well, and yours is far and away the most thorough and comprehensive. It appears RadPower gave you a bit more of an exclusive look and ride! Three observations. The first is that the $2500 price is a bit of an illusion, as no one is going to order this thing without at least one basket. They should have included the rear basket as a standard feature. If it were me, I'd order the large platform for it and then attach my own baskets to the platform. Second, I think the brake should be hydraulic. Given the apparent target demographic (older, physically challenged), hydraulic makes much more sense. If it can't be standard, an option would have been nice. Third, someone might suggest to them that their canopy might come with a flexible solar panel option. Maybe that's already in the works, because that surface is begging for one. Anyway, yeah, I hear you on the basket inclusion, it was probably a business decision to hit the $2.5k attractive price point, but also make profit. It's cool that they are offering free shipping, most trikes are too large and heavy to make that work. Yes, you make another good point about the mechanical brake on the front vs. hydraulic. It's a trade-off. For me, since that's a very short brake line and won't get gunked up (especially with the housing pointed straight down), and they are using such a long easy to actuate lever, AND the bike has a lower top speed... I think it worked really well. I'm not sure how much money they might have saved bye using mechanical, or if the performance improvement just didn't outweigh the easier adjustability of mechanical. Rad has cited this as a reason for still using mechanical on many of their models. I can say that this one worked very well in practice, so it wasn't a real sticking point in my mind. Also yeah, it was cool that I got to spend more time... I drove to Seattle to meet them for this, specifically so I could dig into the details and be thorough. It seems the Liberty trike is a better buy. It is smaller, more portable, and also can go about 20 miles per charge. It is much cheaper and has been in the market longer.
I think, this trike will be a super nice for all the delivery guys. With the top they're not that exposed to the weather, as they're all day long on the bikes. Also for older people, this can be a possibility to stay mobile, but not being dependend on a car.
Thanks again for another thorough review, Court! Great to see another etrike option for those who need or want one. I read elsewhere this was supposed to fold, so I’m glad you point out the frame itself doesn’t fold, but can be separated into halves if needed.
You're welcome! Yeah, the handlebar folds down, and the bike gets pretty low if you remove the seat and seat post... but the frame is fixed, unless you unscrew the four bolts at that center interface. I think the real innovation is how the drivetrain is completely connected to the rear half of the frame, so the chain won't fall off and nothing really has to be adjusted after disconnecting the two halves... just some quick connection wires. The little metal bar stand that elevates the rear portion (protecting the chainring etc.) was very smart. I could tell that the design got a lot of attention and care. Very impressive, especially for the price :)
Cheers to RadPowerBikes for being privy to the benefits of adult tricycles. A reputable brand using their pull to grow the market and get more people out of their cars with a low-carbon e-mobility option. Great for folks like me w/ balance limitations + haul cargo! In the future, I would love to see a RadWagon/RadTrike hybrid. A long tail trike, if you will. As a parent of two growing kids, I can see this type of model being huge for the future of family transport and shrinking our reliance on minivans, SUVs, and the like.

Awesome! I actually wrote to Rad a few weeks ago asking if they had a trike in the works! I have a Radrunner, which I love, but arthritis has set in and I am wanting to keep my biking going. Love love love!

I have found that the Rad trike can be tipped over when taking a corner or high siding a rear wheel when turning a corner. Always use caution and ride at your ability.
Rad has designed a great replacement for the golf carts in retirement villages. Hopefully it has a quality UL certified battery. Hydraulic brake would be better, but mechanical may be okay since it has a low top speed. I'm 65 and very satisfied with my Gazelle NL. This might be its replacement in 25 years.

Yeah, this is a big step up from many of the converted trikes that just have an electric bike kit installed. Very well done, but doesn't unnecessarily change anything. It's an upright trike, purpose-built to be electric. The cross-compatible accessories are a big win in my opinion, and their customer support.
Nice ! The price and feature set along with the obvious safety it offers a wide demographic of riders will, I believe, make this a big hit for RAD. As a kid in FL I saw lots of acoustic trikes. Looks like RAD may make these e-trikes a practical option for seniors, those with mobility issues, moms/dads with kids and general cargo/errand bikes.
Def a sweet trike. However, my money went to the 'Lectric Trike' due to price/value, better quality components, excellent design & weight, and rear/mid-drive power with a differential like your car - while still maintaining a super-low center of gravity that literally turns on a dime. They both top out at about 14mph - but the Lectric rear-wheel drive does not spin out like front-wheel drive trikes.

As usual, excellent review. I've really come to value EBR's reviews as they're so thorough. It's one of the main reasons I chose my current ride of the Juiced Bikes HyperScorpion. That being said, it's time to point out the elephant in the demo room. Unfortunately, Rad doesn't seem to have learned anything from using proprietary tires with the RadWagon 4 cargo ebike, which is currently in a 29,300 unit mass recall for these defective proprietary tires. That's 29,300 RW4 owners who have been instructed by Rad over 3 months ago to park their bikes and not ride them until a solution starts rolling out (estimated in Feb/Mar 2023, but a full rollout and getting the bikes back up and running will likely take 8-12 months from the first notification in Sept 2022). Just about all 18 x 2.25 tires are designed for children's bikes, which don't weigh 82lbs by themselves and don't have a load capacity of 415lbs. So once again Rad partnered with a tire manufacturer (at least it's not the same manufacture -- Kenda and not Vee like with the RW4) to make special proprietary tires for one of their bikes. After 11 months and 2500 miles I ended up taking Rad up on returning my RadWagon 4 for a full refund. I may not be the smartest man in the world, but I'm not about to go down this same path with yet another Rad bike that has the exact same design mistake.
I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the HyperScorpion! Funny you mention tires. I tried to cover the details, and asked about the sizing. I think 18" is more standard than the ones they developed for RadWagon. It's actually really cool to see a company scrutinizing each component, and being willing to make their own! But yeah, less easy to find and probably adds to the expense. Other companies make custom stuff such as the handlebar stem from Stromer, the derailleur guard rack of Moustache (and Trek has a similar piece of hardware). I think Trek actually created Boost hub spacing... and the standard got adopted by the industry.
Reverse is cool,I find it impossible to move my Lectric Trike backwards. Right. I'm impressed by the front hub motor like cheap bike kits have. Who needs proper rear wheel drive WITH A DIFFERENTIAL. I'm impressed by the mechanical front disk brake and particularly impressed by the rear coaster brakel ike bikes had when I was a kid 60 years ago, brings back fond memories like my Weejuns and our crank telephone. And I love that you can choose from a number of options to make it the semi-usable bike you want. And who needs a speedometer anyway. Love that the handlebars fold down, makes me wish that the frame folded too. But I guess that's not technically possible. I also LOVE that they just reduced the price from $2499 to $1299. I'm sure that all those folks who paid that extra $1500 dollars for it a few days ago will be getting rebates to make that up. Yep.
This is one of those things that such few people want, yet the few may flock to this. Wow, what a risk for Rad. Looks like they're trying to take some market share of senior buyers from Lectric. What a decision. Will be interesting to see what comes of this. Very different market for sure. This isn't something urban dwellers can exactly park on the sidewalk.
It sounds like they've been working on it for three years! The design and finis are really nice. Not as affordable as something like the Lectric XP, but offers lots of utility and quality drive systems. I was amazed that they are using the same hub motor as the RadRover. Nice to see those torque arms on the overbuilt fork ;) yeah, parking could be an issue in the city with crowded bike racks. Maybe this would just lock to the end of a rack and the battery could come off to charge and store inside.
@@ElectricBikeReview You bring up a good point about storage at home too. I was so shocked about this introduction that I had only initially thought about application during use. But storage while not in use (majority of the time) would certainly be only for homeowners (as opposed to apartment dwellers). Even homeowners don't all have garage space enough to fit a trike and if it did, not necessarily to be able to navigate to get out of the garage w/o moving a car first. Still excited that the brand is trying new things. I'm supportive of Rad, as I am of your channel. You're providing some solid work. I've been watching you for several years now. I swear, over a decade. Continue doing what your'e doing. Stay safe.
@@Next96300 I hadn't thought much about it, but a micro bike would've been cool. Something the old Chinese ladies in SF ride. Currently, it's a Jetson Pro. Weird that there was high enough demand for a trike that RadPower actually built on. I see so many problems with actually selling this. Cool concept and I support the brand, but not sure this is heading in the right direction.
Next release the Rad coffin with 15 ah battery pack that can easily propel you to the burial site even at a 45 mile distance 65 miles on slow speed level one……😂
For weather proofing it really should have a fully enclosed cabin. At the very least a roll-up waterproof cover. Your feet and legs will get splashed in the rain but your upper half will still be dry. That gap between the basket in the front and the bottom of the plastic windshield is gonna be a problem area too. I'm most concerned about staying dry and warm. It'd be great to have a locking cabin with doors on both sides with internal storage that can be locked as well.
The windshield/canopy could be more refine/aerodynamic. Please look at some of the European designs already out there. Looking forward to seeing them in Canada.
I'll keep an eye out! At slower speeds, the aerodynamics are probably much less of a consideration vs. space inside and simplicity/affordability of design. Yeah, lots of unique products in Europe, I think the segment is bigger there with more people cycle-commuting. will be cool to see that in North America someday too!
One thing I _really_ want from Rad Power Bikes is 250W models that would be legal here in Australia. I don't make the rules, I think 250W sucks, but I so want the build quality and attention to detail that Rad bring to their bikes to be available here. The Trike would do just fine at 250W, I think.
Yeah, maybe trikes are controversial in general? I think a lot of people attack Rad because they are successful. Some of the comments could be from industry folk or competitors. The company has had good integrity and produced good value products during the time I've covered them.
This trike is good for cargo and slow/medium speed, but going fast enough around a curve will result in it flipping over. So don't buy it for sporty riding, but do buy it for its utility of cargo hauling.
That thing is pretty dorky for me, but I can't help but think about the utility of it. I'm sort of tempted to get one and do my best to trick it out. I think the wheelbase is far too short for me to really do what I would want to though. I know there are some people out there that will really like this option though.
It's an interesting new platform. I think there's a balance between production and shipping vs. riding and user storage. Wanting something that is compact, but also sturdy and stable. They definitely paid attention to the details of this trike, from what I could tell as I studied it and test rode it.
Coming from a small Pennsylvania town with two bike paths miles apart from each other no bike lanes along the street and narrow sidewalks this bike serves no purpose for me and at a top speed of 14mph driving this thing along a busy street that slow sounds awful dangerous to me not all of us live in Seattle or other ultra bike friendly cities that being said I'm going to have to go with the rad runner plus , great review as always
I understand your discomfort with biking in your context. This is why I and other folks fight for safe-for-everyone connections to bike trails with protected bike lanes, bike/walk sidepaths, and connector trails. I hope you'll ask your local elected officials and transportation departments for more trail projects like these.
RadRunner Plus is a great choice, the wide tires help improve stability, and the bike sits lower to the ground so easy to approach and stabilize :D I see how the wider trike brings some trade-offs. They seem to be popular in less crowded neighborhoods where people can ride along side of the the street, and there's limited traffic.
i see people talking about riding this thing around the city, but I don't think it would have the speed or the nimbleness of a normal bike. Meaning, you would just be getting in literally everyone's way. I feel like there are a lot of places a bike could go where this thing would be too wide and get hung up. Every bike path has those big metal bars sticking out of the ground to prevent any larger vehicles from accessing it, I doubt there is any kind of standard for the spacing on those, etc
It’s a reasonable perspective and question. Perhaps there is a standard for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. I’m not sure what that would be, but possibly door width? Kind of makes sense, and if that was the case, this would fit. Yeah, it’s a bit slower than other North American ebikes, but it’s the same as most European electric bicycles. I believe it’s faster than a mobility scooter, and I’ve seen them scooting around town on sidewalks before. I see people riding electric trikes around the neighborhood sometimes, often couples, and everyone seems to smile and be supportive… but I rent in a pretty friendly neighborhood with low traffic.
I am so glad the new bike did not turn out to be my lusted after dual battery dual motor Monster Rover. I still wish Rad would turn out a normal looking bike with the kick-down-the-barn-door tire shredding smoking power of sometihng like a top end Arial Rider Grizzly. (I hate the mini-bike looks... so sue me). Come on Rad, you build it, I will buy it.
Hi Tom! It seems like the smaller companies are willing to push the envelope and produce products that blur the lines on the ebike class system, or go for something niche. I see more ebikes doing multi-battery, but there's a difference between the internal ones like Riese & Müller with two Bosch PowerTube 500's vs. two plastic external packs. I feel like Rad is focusing on refinement and offerings that have broad appeal. It just seems like they are being more conservative to make sure nothing goes wrong, and also still keep their prices reachable for mass market while offering support and a good warranty.
It's a good bank for the buck but it ain't touching higher end e-trikes available in Europe. Can you even compare this to something like the Pfautec Scoobo+? I don't think so.
My goal is to be objective, thorough, and show products from many angles so people can gain insights and answer questions that I might not have thought of. I overthink things in general, but my hope is that these reviews provide many different insights that could benefit different types of customers. There are other overviews and company videos that tend to be promotional and exciting vs. deep and thorough. This is just my approach :)
Hopefully it catches on, it’d be great if it became a thing for cargo use. I will say, I’ve never seen a person riding a trike in the wild, and I’m a niche rider of EUCs. I’ve seen a few others out there on those. Makes me worry about it from an anecdotal perspective that it’s less popular than the PEV that scares people the most.
My Dad lives in a retirement community and I see couples riding ebikes a lot. Several of them have one bicycle and one trike, riding in pairs. In Vancouver Canada, where I spend a lot of time, I don't see any trikes, but I did see a fancy recumbent trike once that a commuter was pedaling... much faster and sportier than this one. He had a lighted flag and lots of high visibility yellow clothing since he was sitting low in the recumbent trike :)
Great review but someone teach this guy what an octagon is. He was talking about the platform in the back and said it was an octagon… how many sides does an octagon have? And how many does the back platform of this bike have?
Octagon is eight, should I have said hexagon? Sometimes I have so many details about the bike in my mind, that I'll misspeak on a detail. I shoot these reviews stream of consciousness and do make mistakes sometimes too.
Hey Court, I saw you just did a review of the Stromer e bike. I think it’s interesting that the Stromer S2 and the Serial 1 bikes are very similar. From the frame to the headlight to the internal gears they seem like close cousins. Also what do you think of the Trex Allant 8S or the Allant 9.9 with carbon frame. Just curious what you thought. Hi CLay! Stromer has had a target on their back for many years. I frequently hear "Stromer Killer" from people in the space who are excited about a new design or similar features. I see them as being very unique, with the silent hub motor, high power, high speed, and automotive level designs and integration. Serial 1 is pretty cool, and brings a bit of that automotive-grade design... but in person, there's still a big gap and the performance is different with a mid-drive. Not worse, just different. Trek is one of my favorite brands in the ebike space because of their consistency and great dealer support. They are like a slow steady powerhouse that isn't always as exciting, but regularly coming through with a strong offering. 2023 will be an exciting year :)
Worth mentioning that trikes can be quite difficult to ride at first because they follow the camber of the road, so often the rider is not perpendicular unless the road is dead flat. Certainly a learning curve and not particularly intuitive.
Yeah, it sounds like the bike also works with the higher capacity 48 volt 14 amp hour packs that Rad sells. Maybe the lower speeds gets a better range here, and they wanted to hit the special $2.5k price point?
Hi Edward! We focused purely on the Trike for this visit. Rad is actually very secretive when it comes to any of their new product launches. I never get details until the day before a visit or test ride. They're really professional, so unfortunately I have not heard anything about a new RadMission. Where did you hear about it?!
Definitely aren't getting a mission 2. Internally they have shifted focus to boomers as tough economy means they don't believe young buyers will be able to afford anything and when you can make a trike for the same cost as a mission and sell it for 2.5k you don't make a mission. I emailed in my disappointment around their brand direction. Heavy cumbersome fat tire bikes for retirees with trucks. Wow such a micro mobility change in transportation paradigm guys.
Good question, I wonder if they will sell the seat separately? It was very nice, had some great adjustability. I think the range varies on weight of the rider and cargo, tire pressure, and the terrain... but should be like 20 to 45 miles depending on assist level and throttle use.
I find it interesting that they made absolutely SURE you could not take it outside; that you were stuck in a small room where there was no way you'd be able to get it up to full speed and take a turn. That will be the real test of this, and they insured that it couldn't happen on review videos. Are they that worried it will tip?
I think they wanted to keep it private since this was well before launch. I have been able to get most trikes onto two wheels by turning sharp and leaning out... this one was as stable as the others I've tried. We actually tried to do some outdoor shooting, but the demo unit didn't arrive in time for the launch. If you get the chance, try it out sometime at a dealer!
I would like to buy one of these for someone that lives with us. The problem we have is the driveway we have is 30 degrees and I am not sure if this unit will haul up that steep an incline. I haven't found any info online as of yet about that.
I think it would work if you carried a bit of speed in, or took it at a slight angle. Worst case, hop off and walk next to it while using the throttle to help it up the driveway.
I see this product only really being attractive to those who have (or forsee) mobility issues. The thing is, people with mobility issues don't want to pedal (just battery power). And those looking for utility want a wider/more stable triangle, multi-speeds, regen braking and weather protection. Not seeing a logical customer for this. I guess we'll see how long it remains in their catalog.
I'm curious to see how it does too. Rad probably researched the different use cases... compared the trade offs in features, costs, and what people said they wanted. Hopefully the feedback they collected reflects reality :)
Great question! I see it out in the wild from time to time. The platform seemed like a B2B offering (sold to businesses only, and in 2+ quantity). They seem to be focusing on retail... but I really don't know the status of the RadBurro at this point. It wasn't mentioned at all during the visit to see the trike.
Of the 4 ebikes I have owned, the RadTrike is by far the most disappointing. I discovered a design flaw during my first ride. The clearance between the pedals and the frame is insuffient. In order to pedal without having the heal of my shoe contnually catching on the back frame, it is necessary that I peddle using my instep opposed to the ball of my foot. A significanf flaw in a bike lauded for being designed from the "ground up". I discovered the second flaw after a week of riding. The back chain sprocket assembly has a sprocket that, instead of being part of the bar attaching it to the bike, is a seperate, moveable part using a simple hex bolt to keep it in place using friction between the bolt and the bar. An absurd design given the bar is subject to continual vibration that loosens the bolt making it necessary to tighten it repeatedly to prevent the chain from coming off. A purchase I deeply regret.
On the one hand, it seems like they could have specced a 31.6mm or 30.9mm post vs. the stock 27.2mm (like they use on the other models). The longer post, combined with a heavier seat and back rest with a high weight rating of 415lbs could cause concern. On the other hand, they design engineer said he's been working on it for three years, and Rad is pretty conservative with how the bike accelerates, and how sturdy the rack attachments are. I would assume that they've tested it and are satisfied? I'm only 135lbs, so it worked just fine during my test rides ;)
BOO, don’t buy from RAD!!! They have not yet dealt with the Rad Wagon recall from August 2021 yet!!! My Rad has been sitting since then!!! Company is a joke show!

motor in the front only? NO THANKS. All the weight is on the back wheels this is a flawed design. good luck getting up a steep hill when it's wet and you have 40lbs under your seat.
ummmm, I think Rads Engineers thoroughly tested these in almost every road, terrain and weather conditions. If you need to charge up hills, no e-trike would be a good choice. I see this used by seniors, disabled riders, Moms/dads with kids and grocery-getters among others
@@goobfilmcast4239 It's not they didn't test it they took the cheapest route so that they could get the cost down to the price that it is, and some of those sacrifices may not be worth it
There are always trade-offs when designing a product. Cost is a big factor... so designing an ebike that can "do everything" but nobody can afford, that does't work. This offers a more powerful motor than most electric trikes in the same price range, and the smooth ramp of power should reduce slippage. The motor gets a great mechanical advantage from the smaller wheel size in the front.
It's an interesting color, a new shade of gray that is slightly different form the others. Red trikes are always fun, but maybe that color didn't match their orange logo branding as well or wasn't as popular for both guys and gals etc. since it only comes in one color at this time.
Yeah, slightly faster, much lighter, a lot cheaper... a product that's in-between for people who want that sort of experience, but maybe feeling a bit vulnerable on a two wheel bicycle.

Yea, it does overlap a bit with a mobility scooter. No payment for this and most of my reviews. For a couple of years I experimented with a $1,500 service fee to cover expenses and help me expand my team... but most of the people I invited to review with me have left and started their own channels. I went back to free late last year. For this review I covered my own gas and car to get to Seattle and Rad covered a hotel for one night. My goal has always been to share my enthusiasm for ebikes, but be objective and communicate the trade-offs as I see them.
It checks a lot of boxes, brings good value and support to a product many people want... a more stable ebike that can carry some cargo. Kind of a "tried and true" approach in my opinion.
Yea I’m sure throttles trikes aren’t gonna hurt anyone. Let put people with limited mobility on an unstable tricycle that does 14 plus Mph under throttle…..Rad Rover is trash…
There is a spectrum of skills and balance that people have throughout life. If someone can ride a two wheel bicycle, but start to want stability before going to a mobility trike or wheelchair, this one fits well in my opinion. It is also good as a cargo platform.

Good suggestion, I believe that more of Rad's stuff is certified (like their updated battery charger with the orange wire). They are one of the highest quality "affordable" brands that I'm aware of, which includes the better warranty and customer support.
This trike is gonna be a disaster. It’s meant for people who don’t know how to ride a bike or others who will be carrying all kinds of junk. Either case it will be a menace on our roads.

Yeah! I remember seeing them for the first time in Brooklyn, NY (or some kind of home made fabric and plastic sacks tied to handlebars). I realized how useful they could be in the very cold weather, with freezing air passing by elevated hands! The Rad bar mitts are way fancier than anything else I've ever seen, so much thought went into the different openings to allow for wires and display button pads. So cool...
@@ElectricBikeReview Rad does a great job with there accessories. I have two rads with about 3k miles total now. Only issues I have had is their controllers, but they replaced them both and also I some how ended up with a back up one 🤫 rad wagon and rad city 5 🤟
I feel ya, but it's actually pretty common for trikes (especially upright like this one) to have a capped speed. The center of gravity is higher, the three wheels are stable to load and ride slowly, but at higher speed could make it easier to tip. It's still a lot faster than most mobility scooters :)

For an entry level delivery vehicle I think this thing is genius. The average drive speed in the city is probably around 14 because of signals anyways. Don't want people rolling these things at 20mph. For people with mobility issues this seems awesome. Always great to have options for more people and this bike hits multiple markets at once. Nice.
Great point about the speed in cities, Dustin. It's a neat little ebike with lots of possibilities. I like how sturdy it felt, and appreciate the overbuilt fork and powerful motor they chose. It's a lot more refined than some of the other trikes I've covered in years past. They were neat, but felt more like conversion kits vs. a purpose built product like this. Other good ones include the EVELO Compass and Liberty Trike, both custom designs like the RadTrike. Court, thanks for the great preview/review. I've looked at three other "first look" previews as well, and yours is far and away the most thorough and comprehensive. It appears RadPower gave you a bit more of an exclusive look and ride! Three observations. The first is that the $2500 price is a bit of an illusion, as no one is going to order this thing without at least one basket. They should have included the rear basket as a standard feature. If it were me, I'd order the large platform for it and then attach my own baskets to the platform. Second, I think the brake should be hydraulic. Given the apparent target demographic (older, physically challenged), hydraulic makes much more sense. If it can't be standard, an option would have been nice. Third, someone might suggest to them that their canopy might come with a flexible solar panel option. Maybe that's already in the works, because that surface is begging for one. Anyway, yeah, I hear you on the basket inclusion, it was probably a business decision to hit the $2.5k attractive price point, but also make profit. It's cool that they are offering free shipping, most trikes are too large and heavy to make that work. Yes, you make another good point about the mechanical brake on the front vs. hydraulic. It's a trade-off. For me, since that's a very short brake line and won't get gunked up (especially with the housing pointed straight down), and they are using such a long easy to actuate lever, AND the bike has a lower top speed... I think it worked really well. I'm not sure how much money they might have saved bye using mechanical, or if the performance improvement just didn't outweigh the easier adjustability of mechanical. Rad has cited this as a reason for still using mechanical on many of their models. I can say that this one worked very well in practice, so it wasn't a real sticking point in my mind. Also yeah, it was cool that I got to spend more time... I drove to Seattle to meet them for this, specifically so I could dig into the details and be thorough. Inexpensive Milk Crates and tie wraps can easily make budget cargo options.
It seems the Liberty trike is a better buy. It is smaller, more portable, and also can go about 20 miles per charge. It is much cheaper and has been in the market longer.
I like the Liberty Trike too, have reviewed it twice! The RadTrike felt sturdier to me, and I appreciate the many accessories they are working on.
I think, this trike will be a super nice for all the delivery guys. With the top they're not that exposed to the weather, as they're all day long on the bikes. Also for older people, this can be a possibility to stay mobile, but not being dependend on a car.

I read elsewhere this was supposed to fold, so I’m glad you point out the frame itself doesn’t fold, but can be separated into halves if needed.
You're welcome! Yeah, the handlebar folds down, and the bike gets pretty low if you remove the seat and seat post... but the frame is fixed, unless you unscrew the four bolts at that center interface. I think the real innovation is how the drivetrain is completely connected to the rear half of the frame, so the chain won't fall off and nothing really has to be adjusted after disconnecting the two halves... just some quick connection wires. The little metal bar stand that elevates the rear portion (protecting the chainring etc.) was very smart. I could tell that the design got a lot of attention and care. Very impressive, especially for the price :)
Cheers to RadPowerBikes for being privy to the benefits of adult tricycles. A reputable brand using their pull to grow the market and get more people out of their cars with a low-carbon e-mobility option. Great for folks like me w/ balance limitations + haul cargo!
In the future, I would love to see a RadWagon/RadTrike hybrid. A long tail trike, if you will. As a parent of two growing kids, I can see this type of model being huge for the future of family transport and shrinking our reliance on minivans, SUVs, and the like.

I have found that the Rad trike can be tipped over when taking a corner or high siding a rear wheel when turning a corner. Always use caution and ride at your ability.
Rad has designed a great replacement for the golf carts in retirement villages. Hopefully it has a quality UL certified battery. Hydraulic brake would be better, but mechanical may be okay since it has a low top speed. I'm 65 and very satisfied with my Gazelle NL. This might be its replacement in 25 years.

Yeah, this is a big step up from many of the converted trikes that just have an electric bike kit installed. Very well done, but doesn't unnecessarily change anything. It's an upright trike, purpose-built to be electric. The cross-compatible accessories are a big win in my opinion, and their customer support.
Nice ! The price and feature set along with the obvious safety it offers a wide demographic of riders will, I believe, make this a big hit for RAD. As a kid in FL I saw lots of acoustic trikes. Looks like RAD may make these e-trikes a practical option for seniors, those with mobility issues, moms/dads with kids and general cargo/errand bikes.
Def a sweet trike. However, my money went to the 'Lectric Trike' due to price/value, better quality components, excellent design & weight, and rear/mid-drive power with a differential like your car - while still maintaining a super-low center of gravity that literally turns on a dime. They both top out at about 14mph - but the Lectric rear-wheel drive does not spin out like front-wheel drive trikes.

As usual, excellent review. I've really come to value EBR's reviews as they're so thorough. It's one of the main reasons I chose my current ride of the Juiced Bikes HyperScorpion.
That being said, it's time to point out the elephant in the demo room. Unfortunately, Rad doesn't seem to have learned anything from using proprietary tires with the RadWagon 4 cargo ebike, which is currently in a 29,300 unit mass recall for these defective proprietary tires. That's 29,300 RW4 owners who have been instructed by Rad over 3 months ago to park their bikes and not ride them until a solution starts rolling out (estimated in Feb/Mar 2023, but a full rollout and getting the bikes back up and running will likely take 8-12 months from the first notification in Sept 2022). Just about all 18 x 2.25 tires are designed for children's bikes, which don't weigh 82lbs by themselves and don't have a load capacity of 415lbs. So once again Rad partnered with a tire manufacturer (at least it's not the same manufacture -- Kenda and not Vee like with the RW4) to make special proprietary tires for one of their bikes.
After 11 months and 2500 miles I ended up taking Rad up on returning my RadWagon 4 for a full refund. I may not be the smartest man in the world, but I'm not about to go down this same path with yet another Rad bike that has the exact same design mistake.
I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the HyperScorpion! Funny you mention tires. I tried to cover the details, and asked about the sizing. I think 18" is more standard than the ones they developed for RadWagon. It's actually really cool to see a company scrutinizing each component, and being willing to make their own! But yeah, less easy to find and probably adds to the expense. Other companies make custom stuff such as the handlebar stem from Stromer, the derailleur guard rack of Moustache (and Trek has a similar piece of hardware). I think Trek actually created Boost hub spacing... and the standard got adopted by the industry.
The M340 electric tricycle is such a great value for the price - it's affordable, high-quality, and packed with features.
Reverse is cool,I find it impossible to move my Lectric Trike backwards. Right. I'm impressed by the front hub motor like cheap bike kits have. Who needs proper rear wheel drive WITH A DIFFERENTIAL. I'm impressed by the mechanical front disk brake and particularly impressed by the rear coaster brakel ike bikes had when I was a kid 60 years ago, brings back fond memories like my Weejuns and our crank telephone. And I love that you can choose from a number of options to make it the semi-usable bike you want. And who needs a speedometer anyway. Love that the handlebars fold down, makes me wish that the frame folded too. But I guess that's not technically possible. I also LOVE that they just reduced the price from $2499 to $1299. I'm sure that all those folks who paid that extra $1500 dollars for it a few days ago will be getting rebates to make that up. Yep.
This is one of those things that such few people want, yet the few may flock to this. Wow, what a risk for Rad. Looks like they're trying to take some market share of senior buyers from Lectric. What a decision. Will be interesting to see what comes of this. Very different market for sure. This isn't something urban dwellers can exactly park on the sidewalk.
It sounds like they've been working on it for three years! The design and finis are really nice. Not as affordable as something like the Lectric XP, but offers lots of utility and quality drive systems. I was amazed that they are using the same hub motor as the RadRover. Nice to see those torque arms on the overbuilt fork ;) yeah, parking could be an issue in the city with crowded bike racks. Maybe this would just lock to the end of a rack and the battery could come off to charge and store inside.
@@ElectricBikeReview You bring up a good point about storage at home too. I was so shocked about this introduction that I had only initially thought about application during use. But storage while not in use (majority of the time) would certainly be only for homeowners (as opposed to apartment dwellers). Even homeowners don't all have garage space enough to fit a trike and if it did, not necessarily to be able to navigate to get out of the garage w/o moving a car first.

Next release the Rad coffin with 15 ah battery pack that can easily propel you to the burial site even at a 45 mile distance 65 miles on slow speed level one……😂

For weather proofing it really should have a fully enclosed cabin. At the very least a roll-up waterproof cover. Your feet and legs will get splashed in the rain but your upper half will still be dry. That gap between the basket in the front and the bottom of the plastic windshield is gonna be a problem area too. I'm most concerned about staying dry and warm. It'd be great to have a locking cabin with doors on both sides with internal storage that can be locked as well.

The windshield/canopy could be more refine/aerodynamic. Please look at some of the European designs already out there. Looking forward to seeing them in Canada.
I'll keep an eye out! At slower speeds, the aerodynamics are probably much less of a consideration vs. space inside and simplicity/affordability of design. Yeah, lots of unique products in Europe, I think the segment is bigger there with more people cycle-commuting. will be cool to see that in North America someday too!
One thing I _really_ want from Rad Power Bikes is 250W models that would be legal here in Australia. I don't make the rules, I think 250W sucks, but I so want the build quality and attention to detail that Rad bring to their bikes to be available here. The Trike would do just fine at 250W, I think.
I see a lot of HATER comments regarding Trikes.....Frankly, I think RAD has hit a homerun here.
Yeah, maybe trikes are controversial in general? I think a lot of people attack Rad because they are successful. Some of the comments could be from industry folk or competitors. The company has had good integrity and produced good value products during the time I've covered them.
This trike is good for cargo and slow/medium speed, but going fast enough around a curve will result in it flipping over. So don't buy it for sporty riding, but do buy it for its utility of cargo hauling.
That thing is pretty dorky for me, but I can't help but think about the utility of it. I'm sort of tempted to get one and do my best to trick it out. I think the wheelbase is far too short for me to really do what I would want to though. I know there are some people out there that will really like this option though.
It's an interesting new platform. I think there's a balance between production and shipping vs. riding and user storage. Wanting something that is compact, but also sturdy and stable. They definitely paid attention to the details of this trike, from what I could tell as I studied it and test rode it.

Coming from a small Pennsylvania town with two bike paths miles apart from each other no bike lanes along the street and narrow sidewalks this bike serves no purpose for me and at a top speed of 14mph driving this thing along a busy street that slow sounds awful dangerous to me not all of us live in Seattle or other ultra bike friendly cities that being said I'm going to have to go with the rad runner plus , great review as always
I understand your discomfort with biking in your context. This is why I and other folks fight for safe-for-everyone connections to bike trails with protected bike lanes, bike/walk sidepaths, and connector trails. I hope you'll ask your local elected officials and transportation departments for more trail projects like these.
RadRunner Plus is a great choice, the wide tires help improve stability, and the bike sits lower to the ground so easy to approach and stabilize :D I see how the wider trike brings some trade-offs. They seem to be popular in less crowded neighborhoods where people can ride along side of the the street, and there's limited traffic.

i see people talking about riding this thing around the city, but I don't think it would have the speed or the nimbleness of a normal bike. Meaning, you would just be getting in literally everyone's way. I feel like there are a lot of places a bike could go where this thing would be too wide and get hung up. Every bike path has those big metal bars sticking out of the ground to prevent any larger vehicles from accessing it, I doubt there is any kind of standard for the spacing on those, etc
It’s a reasonable perspective and question. Perhaps there is a standard for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. I’m not sure what that would be, but possibly door width? Kind of makes sense, and if that was the case, this would fit. Yeah, it’s a bit slower than other North American ebikes, but it’s the same as most European electric bicycles. I believe it’s faster than a mobility scooter, and I’ve seen them scooting around town on sidewalks before. I see people riding electric trikes around the neighborhood sometimes, often couples, and everyone seems to smile and be supportive… but I rent in a pretty friendly neighborhood with low traffic.
I am so glad the new bike did not turn out to be my lusted after dual battery dual motor Monster Rover. I still wish Rad would turn out a normal looking bike with the kick-down-the-barn-door tire shredding smoking power of sometihng like a top end Arial Rider Grizzly. (I hate the mini-bike looks... so sue me). Come on Rad, you build it, I will buy it.
Hi Tom! It seems like the smaller companies are willing to push the envelope and produce products that blur the lines on the ebike class system, or go for something niche. I see more ebikes doing multi-battery, but there's a difference between the internal ones like Riese & Müller with two Bosch PowerTube 500's vs. two plastic external packs. I feel like Rad is focusing on refinement and offerings that have broad appeal. It just seems like they are being more conservative to make sure nothing goes wrong, and also still keep their prices reachable for mass market while offering support and a good warranty.

I overthink things in general, but my hope is that these reviews provide many different insights that could benefit different types of customers. Hopefully it catches on, it’d be great if it became a thing for cargo use. I will say, I’ve never seen a person riding a trike in the wild, and I’m a niche rider of EUCs. I’ve seen a few others out there on those. Makes me worry about it from an anecdotal perspective that it’s less popular than the PEV that scares people the most.
My Dad lives in a retirement community and I see couples riding ebikes a lot. Several of them have one bicycle and one trike, riding in pairs. In Vancouver Canada, where I spend a lot of time, I don't see any trikes, but I did see a fancy recumbent trike once that a commuter was pedaling... much faster and sportier than this one. He had a lighted flag and lots of high visibility yellow clothing since he was sitting low in the recumbent trike :)

I love both Addmotor electric trike and Radpower, but this looks too mini, and the battery placement isn't that friendly.
Great review but someone teach this guy what an octagon is. He was talking about the platform in the back and said it was an octagon… how many sides does an octagon have? And how many does the back platform of this bike have?
Octagon is eight, should I have said hexagon? Sometimes I have so many details about the bike in my mind, that I'll misspeak on a detail. I shoot these reviews stream of consciousness and do make mistakes sometimes too.

Hey Court, I saw you just did a review of the Stromer e bike. I think it’s interesting that the Stromer S2 and the Serial 1 bikes are very similar. From the frame to the headlight to the internal gears they seem like close cousins. Also what do you think of the Trex Allant 8S or the Allant 9.9 with carbon frame. Just curious what you thought. Hi CLay! Stromer has had a target on their back for many years. I frequently hear "Stromer Killer" from people in the space who are excited about a new design or similar features. I see them as being very unique, with the silent hub motor, high power, high speed, and automotive level designs and integration. Serial 1 is pretty cool, and brings a bit of that automotive-grade design... but in person, there's still a big gap and the performance is different with a mid-drive. Not worse, just different. Trek is one of my favorite brands in the ebike space because of their consistency and great dealer support. They are like a slow steady powerhouse that isn't always as exciting, but regularly coming through with a strong offering. 2023 will be an exciting year :)

Worth mentioning that trikes can be quite difficult to ride at first because they follow the camber of the road, so often the rider is not perpendicular unless the road is dead flat. Certainly a learning curve and not particularly intuitive.

Yeah, it sounds like the bike also works with the higher capacity 48 volt 14 amp hour packs that Rad sells. Maybe the lower speeds gets a better range here, and they wanted to hit the special $2.5k price point?

Hi Edward! We focused purely on the Trike for this visit. Rad is actually very secretive when it comes to any of their new product launches. I never get details until the day before a visit or test ride. They're really professional, so unfortunately I have not heard anything about a new RadMission. Where did you hear about it?!
Definitely aren't getting a mission 2. Internally they have shifted focus to boomers as tough economy means they don't believe young buyers will be able to afford anything and when you can make a trike for the same cost as a mission and sell it for 2.5k you don't make a mission. I emailed in my disappointment around their brand direction. Heavy cumbersome fat tire bikes for retirees with trucks. Wow such a micro mobility change in transportation paradigm guys.
Great review. What’s the range on this trike? For people with back problems, can that seat with a backrest be used on their other bikes?
Good question, I wonder if they will sell the seat separately? It was very nice, had some great adjustability. I think the range varies on weight of the rider and cargo, tire pressure, and the terrain... but should be like 20 to 45 miles depending on assist level and throttle use.
I find it interesting that they made absolutely SURE you could not take it outside; that you were stuck in a small room where there was no way you'd be able to get it up to full speed and take a turn. That will be the real test of this, and they insured that it couldn't happen on review videos. Are they that worried it will tip?
I think they wanted to keep it private since this was well before launch. I have been able to get most trikes onto two wheels by turning sharp and leaning out... this one was as stable as the others I've tried. We actually tried to do some outdoor shooting, but the demo unit didn't arrive in time for the launch. If you get the chance, try it out sometime at a dealer!

Trikes are unstable. Make a 4-wheeler with hydraulic brakes, gears, and a bicycle seat like this with a width to go thru a door.

I would like to buy one of these for someone that lives with us. The problem we have is the driveway we have is 30 degrees and I am not sure if this unit will haul up that steep an incline. I haven't found any info online as of yet about that.
I think it would work if you carried a bit of speed in, or took it at a slight angle. Worst case, hop off and walk next to it while using the throttle to help it up the driveway.
I see this product only really being attractive to those who have (or forsee) mobility issues. The thing is, people with mobility issues don't want to pedal (just battery power). And those looking for utility want a wider/more stable triangle, multi-speeds, regen braking and weather protection. Not seeing a logical customer for this. I guess we'll see how long it remains in their catalog.
I'm curious to see how it does too. Rad probably researched the different use cases... compared the trade offs in features, costs, and what people said they wanted. Hopefully the feedback they collected reflects reality :)

Great question! I see it out in the wild from time to time. The platform seemed like a B2B offering (sold to businesses only, and in 2+ quantity). They seem to be focusing on retail... but I really don't know the status of the RadBurro at this point. It wasn't mentioned at all during the visit to see the trike.
Of the 4 ebikes I have owned, the RadTrike is by far the most disappointing. I discovered a design flaw during my first ride. The clearance between the pedals and the frame is insuffient. In order to pedal without having the heal of my shoe contnually catching on the back frame, it is necessary that I peddle using my instep opposed to the ball of my foot. A significanf flaw in a bike lauded for being designed from the "ground up". I discovered the second flaw after a week of riding. The back chain sprocket assembly has a sprocket that, instead of being part of the bar attaching it to the bike, is a seperate, moveable part using a simple hex bolt to keep it in place using friction between the bolt and the bar. An absurd design given the bar is subject to continual vibration that loosens the bolt making it necessary to tighten it repeatedly to prevent the chain from coming off. A purchase I deeply regret.
That seat post is is going to break real quick.
On the one hand, it seems like they could have specced a 31.6mm or 30.9mm post vs. the stock 27.2mm (like they use on the other models). The longer post, combined with a heavier seat and back rest with a high weight rating of 415lbs could cause concern. On the other hand, they design engineer said he's been working on it for three years, and Rad is pretty conservative with how the bike accelerates, and how sturdy the rack attachments are. I would assume that they've tested it and are satisfied? I'm only 135lbs, so it worked just fine during my test rides ;)

BOO, don’t buy from RAD!!! They have not yet dealt with the Rad Wagon recall from August 2021 yet!!! My Rad has been sitting since then!!! Company is a joke show!

Haha! I asked several times to take it outside, but they wanted to keep it out of the public eye since this was a top secret project. It was also rainy in Seattle. I'm grateful they found a decent place to film and brought the whole team to participate and answer my technical questions ;)

motor in the front only? NO THANKS. All the weight is on the back wheels this is a flawed design. good luck getting up a steep hill when it's wet and you have 40lbs under your seat.
ummmm, I think Rads Engineers thoroughly tested these in almost every road, terrain and weather conditions. If you need to charge up hills, no e-trike would be a good choice. I see this used by seniors, disabled riders, Moms/dads with kids and grocery-getters among others
@@goobfilmcast4239 It's not they didn't test it they took the cheapest route so that they could get the cost down to the price that it is, and some of those sacrifices may not be worth it

There are always trade-offs when designing a product. Cost is a big factor... so designing an ebike that can "do everything" but nobody can afford, that does't work. This offers a more powerful motor than most electric trikes in the same price range, and the smooth ramp of power should reduce slippage. The motor gets a great mechanical advantage from the smaller wheel size in the front.
This would be neat if it had a stand-up ride mode, too.

I love everything but the color of the bike. The puce green is hideous. I'd like to see it in yellow, red, and/or black.
It's an interesting color, a new shade of gray that is slightly different form the others. Red trikes are always fun, but maybe that color didn't match their orange logo branding as well or wasn't as popular for both guys and gals etc. since it only comes in one color at this time.

That’s definitely an option. They tend to be slower and cost a lot more. This might be an in-between option, and a bit more fun 🤩
Don’t waste your money on rad power bikes. They use cheap parts for their bikes and overhype their brand. Buyer beware.

Yeah, slightly faster, much lighter, a lot cheaper... a product that's in-between for people who want that sort of experience, but maybe feeling a bit vulnerable on a two wheel bicycle.

Yea, it does overlap a bit with a mobility scooter. No payment for this and most of my reviews. For a couple of years I experimented with a $1,500 service fee to cover expenses and help me expand my team... but most of the people I invited to review with me have left and started their own channels. I went back to free late last year. For this review I covered my own gas and car to get to Seattle and Rad covered a hotel for one night. My goal has always been to share my enthusiasm for ebikes, but be objective and communicate the trade-offs as I see them.

It checks a lot of boxes, brings good value and support to a product many people want... a more stable ebike that can carry some cargo. Kind of a "tried and true" approach in my opinion.

There is a spectrum of skills and balance that people have throughout life. If someone can ride a two wheel bicycle, but start to want stability before going to a mobility trike or wheelchair, this one fits well in my opinion. It is also good as a cargo platform.
You need to start saying at the start of your videos if the "review" item is UL 2849 approved. Save everyone time watching a cheap Chinese made fire starter.
Good suggestion, I believe that more of Rad's stuff is certified (like their updated battery charger with the orange wire). They are one of the highest quality "affordable" brands that I'm aware of, which includes the better warranty and customer support.

This trike is gonna be a disaster. It’s meant for people who don’t know how to ride a bike or others who will be carrying all kinds of junk. Either case it will be a menace on our roads.
You do realize bikes have just as much right to the road as any other vehicle and your chance of being inconvenienced by one is slim.

Yeah! I remember seeing them for the first time in Brooklyn, NY (or some kind of home made fabric and plastic sacks tied to handlebars). I realized how useful they could be in the very cold weather, with freezing air passing by elevated hands! The Rad bar mitts are way fancier than anything else I've ever seen, so much thought went into the different openings to allow for wires and display button pads. So cool...
@@ElectricBikeReview Rad does a great job with there accessories. I have two rads with about 3k miles total now. Only issues I have had is their controllers, but they replaced them both and also I some how ended up with a back up one 🤫 rad wagon and rad city 5 🤟

I feel ya, but it's actually pretty common for trikes (especially upright like this one) to have a capped speed. The center of gravity is higher, the three wheels are stable to load and ride slowly, but at higher speed could make it easier to tip. It's still a lot faster than most mobility scooters :)
